In addition, it may be difficult to weld when the barrel is sticking so far out that it touches your target before the welder gets close, even though the welder is ranged in game

You'd have to move both hands or have something that ejected the clip because of the way the gun is created(reloading it normally would be slow and a skulk would kill you before you could stick the clip in, yet alone line up the shot :-p
#2 thats the point mg dont reload that fast does it, u gun down 5 skulks and another rapes u and munces on ur

To get the arms you need to decompile a v_model, open the ref smd, remove whatever you don't need, save, and merge.
On second thought, try doing it in reverse (save the gun, decompile the v model, remove whatever weapon, and merge your gun into the model)
