to welcome new players!
I've just played about 3 rounds of Vampire slayer online. I've played it a tiny bit at LANs, but online I found no-one spoke a word, no-one helped with any advice or tactics and generally it was very unfriendly.

So here I am writing to you miserable lot saying PEASE let's not be the same way as VS was just then. New players are important to a mod, especially at times like this where we risk mods dying (long development times inevitably lead to some lost players). Embrace them with welcoming gifts and help them at every step. Like children, they are our future.

I wanted to play that - having gotten Vamp Slayer Chapter V on a DVD with a games mag, but stuff like lack of help puts me off. Despite this forum I've had to muddle through NS myself, with a few occasionally helpful people giving decent pointers.

Heh, that's cus vampire slayer doesn't reallly REQUIRE communication.
Vampires: Leap around madly slashing and kill the slayers
Slayers: Use your guns and, uhh, shoot the vampires and stake them.

The only 'tricky' parts are the need to stake vampires, leaping, and some of the vampires special abilities.

I think you don't have to tell that to anyone around here in forums. We have a great community here and Im very proud of it. The problem is with some of the advanced NS players who don't have the will to give a helping hand to new players. People here in forums are generally very helpful and smart, so I suppose they are the same in game

I treat people with respect based on their ability to communicate and willigness to learn (in game). If they suck hardcore at the game but are at least TRYING to learn about it without screwing the rest of the team up, they'll get help. If they are vague, confused and un-communicative, I'll curse, snarl, bite and rend limb from limb, such as those who go gorge without warning and then give no response to "What are you doing" "Build the res node" "Build a defense chamber" "get off gorge we need res for the hive".

When someone doesn't read the manual, I usually don't help him... For example, when someone asks me how to buy guns I usually answer something like "press F4 to show the weapons menu"...
But when someone wants to learn and understands all the basics of the game, I'll help him for sure.

VS != NS. Don't compare them, VS has nearly no teamplay in it. One dude with a leaping script can kill the entire opposing force (minus lucky shots and aimbots). NS is too far beyond VS for a comparison.

You know, NS is the only _game_ ever which manual I have read. I just have tried about 30 mods so I just don't have time to read all the manuals

Don't be too harsh on the newcomers. You know that Flay stops making patches if NS doesn't get any new players?

Eh, it's rather frustrating to try to teach the newbies... Not for the reason you'd expect... Here, an example...

*Newbie joins*
*Game starts*
ThatGuy: Who's gorge?
<HIVE> WE NEED BUILDERS!
*Newbie evolves into a gorge*
Newbie: I'm gorge, now what do I do?
3r33t: AHH! N00B GORGE!
h4x0r: KICK HIM!!!
sup3rsku1k: ADMIN! BAN HIM!
* Xentor ignores the others and starts coaching the gorge along
3r33t: BAN TEH N00B GORG!
3r33t: BAN TEH N00B GORG!
3r33t: BAN TEH N00B GORG!
3r33t: BAN TEH N00B GORG!
*Newbie gets kicked*

Perhaps it's because you really have to read that manual to understand anything...
People who don't read it may get frustrated.

Seriously though. I always help new players out. In fact I like doing it. If a player needs help learning a map or something I usually go skulk and tell the player to follow me.

Show them the res nodes the vents... perhaps give them a gorge tutorial things like that.

Now if the new player is a marine, I just say "get in line and follow me PLEBE" After all. thats what you do as a marine.

The manual teaches how to do everything, but it doesn't teach you WHAT to do... A first-time gorge isn't necessarily going to know that you have to drop an RT first when it's quicker to save for an OC... A newbie isn't going to know the one-gorge rule of the current resource formula...

No, you need advice from experienced players (us) before you can really get going...

EDIT: Not to mention D-M-S... Always have them build D first, regardless of the situation, or the amount of insults they get from the narrow-minded players will convince them never to play NS again.

well, a while ago, on some random server I saw something amazing. Someone teaching newbies. He would stand in the marine spawn as an Onos, and was telling them how to hurt it (welder, mines, etc). I left, so as not to disturb the learning process.
'twas heartwarming.
