I'm going to side with Firestorm, .hlla game launcher is the best i've seen around. I greatly prefer it over ase for sure. It's also integrated with gametiger. Everyone in irc loves hlit because of it's irc scripting/integration. .hlla has irc scripts as well <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> and actually easier to use. if someone pastes an ip in irc, all yuo have to do is wave the mouse over, mini-menu pops up, and one click - join game, and it's loading.

Eventhough you can register Ase for about 30 EUR/$ for the rest of your lifespan, you don't have to do it.. at least yet.
The unregistered version of ASE works just fine eventhough it complains about not being registered. I used ASE for a year before I registered it with no other annoyances than the "register now"-style popups when starting the program.
My point was that you can use ASE just fine without registering it (= for free).

But there are some problems in the gamebrowser when you want to change the order of the columns.
