^ I can't come up with language strong enough to describe horseshit like that.
As such, I refuse to give another dollar to the RIAA.

I've never really gotten much into independent music (outside of ani difranco), and now I definately want to.
We as a people need a good way to spread the word about quality music. The traditional avenues (radio, television) have been stolen from the public that rightfully owns them and raped, repeatedly, in public view.

If there is are good places on the net already that people are spreading the word about good independent music, post them in this thread.
If you have any recommendations, post them in this thread.

I stopped buying CDs officially back in like, February. When you're a monopoly/oligarchy, trying to get away with too much can be a bad thing. I no longer support the legal acquisition of Music, outside of directly from the musicians. I do not, however, condone music piracy. Boycotts start with everyday people. Get your message heard and they grow, but they have to start somewhere.

That really makes me feel sick. They took 12 thousand dollars from him, and he's saying that he WON? His dad's saying that he's proud of how he stood up to them!? That's not winning, it's hiding in the corner and letting them roll over you. HE DID NOTHING WRONG. The RIAA is ridiculous, someone needs to stop this.

It was stupid to attack the guy, sure. If he knew his stuff, he would have been able to protect himself. But I wouldn't have built a site that helped contribute to piracy. If I found out that pirated items were being distributed through my website, I would shut it down or remove the ability to download those files. So I don't have any pity for him, especially when he knew that these files were being distributed on his search engine.

I understand that as a search engine, you might get results that offend people. But that's why I wouldn't ever start my own search engine.

I also find it pathetic that he's asking for donations for his savings account to return. That's really low. Why should anyone else care that he was stupid? People getting publicity for this stuff... it's idiotic. "Give my savings account some padding! Donate to this previously unknown person today!"

:/ poor guy, i want to donate to him

that just makes me sick..... $12,000 at 19, that is like all the money he had to....

just for making a person to person program to exchange files... isnt that what the internet is for?

should we just shut down the whole internet? becuase a few are sharing files?

my god!

Yes, those evil people who are downloading 2 songs from an entire album. Burn them all, those infidels. Because we all know everyone can afford to pay an arm and a leg for a CD when they only like 2 songs.

the way i see it - if you didnt download it off the internet, would you actually pay for an overpriced album/cd of songs that you dont specifically know are good/bad, and which you would at best want only a few of them to listen to?

i sure as **** wouldn't.

so all these "we're losing millions and millions of dollars off some college student hosting mp3 files from his basement" crud is just that. bull****.

also, yes he should have stood up

rather than cave in and give up and then ask for donations to get his money back, he should have stood up to them, and asked on site for donations for a decent lawyer. everybody is allowed to know their rights, but none of us fully do, and those of us that do cost sooo much to "rent"

2 songs? that'd set you back $1.98, you should check apple's newest little trick, they SELL music over the Internet!

i reckon if you sold whole albums for like maybe 3, 4 dollars then youd [the msuic sellers] ahve a LOT more people paying for it, because theyre so cheap that theres no point distributing illegally, and theyd save money in law suits, as well as still getting enough profit

Let's see I'll examine my music library.

Hmm. I've got some Tool, downloaded that quite a while ago, wouldn't buy their CD, I don't enjoy explicit lyrics in any of my CD's. 2 Songs from a Perfect Circle, I have a personal distaste for them personally, 2 songs are ok, I would never pay any money for any of their songs because I wouldn't support them as a band.

Mad at Gravity, their whole CD, I bought it because I thought they were outstanding artists, I bought their CD to support them, along with Linkin Park. All the rest are pretty much songs that you could get for free off the bands website, or songs from dead artists.

And if not those, they're not even CD's, they're just music from games or independent songs.

Yes, I know Apples 99 cents a pop songs. But I'm not going to buy songs that the artists put up for download on their on website, or songs that are played on the radio. And remind me, I have no credit card. I guess I have to stop listening to music.

That'd be for those that have a mac in addition to their PC right? Of course, there will EVENTUALLY be a good way to buy songs for the PC, but that day is not yet here.

Of course, the record labels could have made such a distribution program years ago but they're too busy trying to rake in more cash from their outdated distribution model that they fail to see that they're strangling themselves.

You know.. in the whole debate of file-sharing vs piracy I've never met anybody who liked RIAA. I've seen people who stood against piracy, and those who didn't see it as ethically wrong. But all of those people never liked RIAA.
The RIAA is part of many of the old school controls that our soceity has in place. They feel threatened by the Internet, because it is something that threaten's their control.
RIAA = part of the present day "matrix" of control.

Reality check! Unless you sell millions of copies, you can't sell a cd with 3-4 dollars and come up with profit. The musician wants his share of the money, but that's just about 5-10% of the cake. The rest goes to the record company that uses the money to promote the artist, pay the producer and mixer, pay for the studio time, mastering and copying. It's not all free, you know. Pirated cds are so damn cheap because pirates only pay for the materials of the cd.

Of course the current prices of cds are ridiculous. That's mostly because most big record companies are poorly run as businesses. They have to pay outrageous amounts of money to top producers so that the said producers will compose songs for the company's untalented pop idols. There's gotta be something wrong when I could create the best album EVER (and I am not kidding here) with less than quarter the money needed to fund a new Britney Spears album. Also the marketing budgets are way too high. Since the artists are not talented enough to market themselves, they are quickly pushed to the charts right after their first single release. This costs a lot of money - money that could have been used to market 5 more talented artists with the same results.

As a proof that cds actually cost something: I regularly buy cds only from very small, independent labels like Ant-Zen or Ad Noiseam and they charge me about 12,50e per full album.

Sorry, that's in a song that I happen to enjoy a whole bunch. The song itself is by a local band and when I bought the single of the song, it cost me a buck. If it wasn't for the poo-head industry then all CDs would cost a buck or 5. It makes me very angry.

Hmmm....Well technically shouldn't they sue Google aswell? I mean it's not hard to find pirated material with that or maybe it's because Google can actually afford legal representation and they know they wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning this in court. Go pick on someone your own size....

Wow, just when I thought the RIAA finally learned that what they were doing last year was beyond stupid, they go and continue with their streak of moronic lawsuits. I guess the only thing they've learned is that adding the word "Napster" into a legal claim will help them collect a paycheck and destroy some innocent person's financial situation.

'Course, what they're unaware of is that the $12k they just gleefully collected is insignificant compared to the income they're going to lose due to hundreds (or even thousands) of people getting pee'd off because of this story and refusing to buy any more CD's.

Idiots. Seriously. This is the digital age, but the RIAA seems to refuse to move out of the 'physical product' age until they say it's okay to do so.

I tend to agree with this outlook. I download music, and while I'm not especially proud of it, I feel I do it responsibly. If a file has been on my computer for more than a month or so, I either buy the CD or delete it. I use the internet as a CD preview service. I have bought more CDs since I started using it. I discovered Tool through the internet. I now have all of their CDs. I discovered nickel creek through the internet. I now have all of their CDs.

All of that is mute now though. Because I refuse to send any money whatsoever to the RIAA, that means responsible downloading is out too.

I still need music though, therein lies the problem.

Here is a list of RIAA members that I've found and will post here since the riaa website appears to be down (slashdot rules ).
I want to find music to buy that isn't associated with any of these companies. There has got to be some great stuff out there. Post anything if you find it.

I'll kick us off here.

Artist: Vienna Teng
Album: Waking Hour
Publisher: Virt Records
Similar to: Sara Mclaughlin, Enya
Description:
Pretty, soothing, piano/vocal with some background instruments mixed in. The sound engineering sounds pretty popish, but there are some beautiful tracks on there
Recommended Tracks: The Tower, Soon Love Soon

Buy or download foreign music. RIAA can't touch that, and a lot of it is quite good.

Or because they're greedy li'l farts.

Ever asked yourself why casettes cost less then CD's? It's the same music and the actual package is MORE expensive to produce.

Gouge 'em all you can - that's the RIAA motto.

EDIT: I love Vienna Teng!

Just thought of something. I think I'll start an official list of RIAA boycotters in the first post. Anyone in?
