    Basically the same thing that happens if you're travelling at the speed of sound and you make a noise. The light equivalent of a sonic boom.

    As for the sig... well, various MSN screen names are my favourites. Eg, "never moon a werewolf".

    E=mc²
    eg. If your car was going that fast you would turn into pure energy. So turning on your headlights would be the least of your problems.

    <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    If you look at all the variables in this equation, (e=energy, m=mass, c=speed of light) all the equation is telling us is that *IF* your car was converted to energy, it would be a whole lot of energy (90,000,000,000,000,000*the mass of your car).

    It really annoys me when people quote a simple mathematic equation in order to prove their theories. Einstien never claimed that travelling at the speed of light would turn you to pure energy, that's complete rubbish. He, however, DID create the Therory of General Relativity (completely unrelated to E=mc² by the way), which states that mass is directly proportional to velocity in some relationship that also involves the speed of light. He theorised that, as your velocity (and therefore mass) increases, it would take more and more energy to accelerate you further, effectively making it impossible to reach the speed of light without providing you with infinite energy.

    This was based on the assumption that the speed of light is always viewed at the same speed, no matter what your velocity. This brings in the problems with time slowing down and theoretical time travel which I hope your all familar with, cos I'm sure as hell not going into that as well.

    Actually, as you approach C your MASS increases. When they've accelerated particles to near C, their mass has increased as they pump in more energy, and their velocity only fractionally increased. But assuming that you can travel at light speed without becoming infinitely massive or turning to energy, I'm pretty sure you'd create an "optical boom". You wouldn't be able to see anything, by the way. (another interesting though - if you're wearing some kind of cloaking device \ under the effects of a "cloaking spell" which theoretically curves the light around you so that people see right through you, you won't be able to see anything since any light reflected back from objects will be curved around your head without ever reaching your eyes!)

    Very, very close. Much closer than I've seen someone get on any forums in a long, long time. IF you were able to travel the speed of light, you wouldn't turn into pure energy. But the faster you moved, the more energy you would build up (think of it as potential energy, and in, the potential to put a bigger hole in a wall the faster you're moving when you hit it). Because energy is theorized to correlate to mass, it should be impossible to ACCELERATE to the speed of light, not necessarily move at said speed, especially in relativistic situations.

    But what would happen if you were to turn on your headlights while traveling at the speed of light? Well, that depends. Speed of light relative to what? The first thing to beat into your head before approaching relativity is that everything is relative, and nothing is ever at rest. Only more or less energized than another object. You might be sitting at your computer, but you, your chair, your computer, your room, and your house is all spinning quite swiftly across this ball, which is in turn revolving even more quickly around this mass of fusion energy, which is in turn revolving in this motley collection of stars we call a galaxy, which is in turn shooting away from the other galaxies out there. So if someone drove by moving at the speed of light relative to us, we wouldn't even notice him or her turning his lights on, no matter how quickly we could process the image of his or her passing. But whoever was in the car at the time would see the headlights turn on, just like normal. Of course, time would be greatly slowed for that person relative to us, so "normal" is also a relative term (and the slowing of time with energy added is an effect noted and tested using supersonic jets and synchronized atomic clocks, so relativity has some value).

    And sigs? Mine is wonderful, thanks to the amazing Brit Fam. Now, if only I had some hosting for my story, it would be perfect. Not that it's ready to BE hosted, mind you, but it's certainly good on its own merits.

    So your saying, if i start pedaling on a bike, i am gaining mass becuase im using energy to accelerate myself?
  • RPG_JssmfulhudRPG_Jssmfulhud Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4006Members
    The faster you go, the more energy is needed to accelerate. The closer you get to the C speed, the more energy you need.

    So basically, it's impossible to reach C speed, because you would need unlimited energy.

    You're not gaining mass. You're only gaining kinetic energy with accelerating.
