I'm going to give mapping a go.
Do I need to download any NS config type files for Hammer? (like I've had to download back when I was going to map for CS)
All you need is hammer, and zoner tools, the ns.fgd is located in your ns folder which you`ll need to place specific natural selection objects and gamemodes down, I highly suggest doing some halflife deathmatch test map builds before jumping straight into ns, as ns can be slightly more advanced, due to size of maps.
and there is a thread where someone collected all tools needed to start mapping. He just did not include my favorite map-editor QuArK
I haven't made any deathmatch/cstrike/tfc maps of any kind and I'm finding NS mapping... not... impossible, anyway.

^This is useful if you've already got an understanding of making maps with hammer. There are a lot of tutorials out there on how to use the program itself, if you don't already know how to make a simple box map with a spawn point and some lights, then I suggest you start small.
