When you feel ready to gorge or com, try going to servers that only have a handful of players on them. They will most likely be more willing to let you have a try at it.

I think doing a training map would be a ideal for newbies.
Isn't there a thread for how to build a training map ? I might do it if I know how. I never did any HL maps. I used to do Quake series maps. I would have to find time to do it 'cause I am busy with other projects and have so little time.

I have the same problem. No time. Well, I have some free time, but I spend it playing NS I have some ideas for how to make this work, and some ideas to make it really cool. The problem lies in finding the time to build it. Perhaps the best thing would be to prototype the ideas, code them and get them working, and then hand it over to someone or a group of people who can build the content. IE level(s), models, voice sequences, etc.
An in-game training map could be very powerful. I'm sure it would bring more people into this mod who might otherwise get turned off right away because of the learning curve.
If im gorging, I always ask ppl what i should do. But usually I take these steps when building - DC.....RT....RT....DC DC....RT.....HIVE....RT...MC MC MC.....RT(mabye).....HIVE...SC SC SC
I'd stick WOL in there except its difficult to tell when you need one, I tend to gorge on servers with many players anyway so then one gorge can take care of the WOLing.
These are 1.04 steps. I might post once i've tried v2
Not to dis any servers, but I play on Newbie Proving Grounds a lot and every so often you get not only people who aren't Newbi -friendly, but also people who just aren't friendly at all :/ Anyways, I like showing people around when I can... I mean if I'm in the middle of a 18 -player game and it's getting intense, and a newbie pops in and wants to learn Gorge the answer is no. He's more than welcome to learn everything else, but Gorge takes a lot of time to learn... I find comming much easier than Gorging myself... I wish there could be a server that existed just to train people.... I remember trying to train my little brother (okay, so 16 isn't little...) on Gorge and Comm... I got a friend to help me (we needed someone on the other team). We also ended up using an empty public server cuz we are all behind firewalls with our DSL and Cable and couldn't host our own game (at least I couldn't figure it out - lemme know if you have any suggestions or tips). Anyways, the empty server now has 3 ppl, so other ppl start joining... When I start explaining to them that we're not attacking cuz ppl are learning the ropes, they flip out and start flaming all of us. I wish I didn't have to use a public server to do it, but it woul be so awesome if there was a public server that existed specifically for the purpose of having a veteran player on either side training everybody - like a tutorial server... Just an idea...
Yeah, watch out for Newbie Proving Grounds. Despite the name, I haven't found the server to be friendly towards newbies well... *ever*. I mean, every now and again there will be nothing but newbies on, but then some server regular will come in and start his 'target practice' whilst complaining about nothing but n00bs being on the server. Personally, I don't like to go there any more, as like a couple people have implied - some of the people there are just not worth playing around.
A tip to new players, though - a good thing to do is to just go onto some random server with like 5 or 6 people on, join a team, and then just say flat out, "I'm new to the game... could anybody show me some pointers or neat tricks or whatever?" A lot of people will be glad to just help you out and show you the ropes. I've been in games where someone's done that and I just up and let everyone on the server know that we aren't playing seriously anymore, we're just having fun and showing the new guy what's up.
Also, here's my server: Carnage v1.0 64.221.115.162 Currently home to the [FAT] clan and where a lot of the -=CMF=- guys play. The guys are really fun to play with, and *should* gladly teach new guys the ropes. Just take my advise though - if you're new, STATE that you are new, otherwise nobody will just show you how to do stuff. (Oh, and if an admin starts screwing with the gravity and you don't like it, just ask them politely to turn gravity back to normal, as you're trying to learn. that's one bad thing about the server... sometimes some of the admins can be real d1cks ) I'm on there every now and again as [FAT]Dervish or The Prince of Tennis, so if you see me give me a holler and I'll show you what's up.

Sleepless: 129.21.147.62
Playpen: 24.106.119.9
Are they still in effect and were just down, or are they no longer around?
Thx,
P.S.
First time trying the mod, am looking for a good learning ground...
Thx,
