Unworthy map update (ns_sync)

7 crappy pix
I probably shouldn't even post these as they will tarnish my good name...but i owe it to cliff to show off his textures, and also to let you guys know i'm not dead .

I don't particularly like the lighting in any of these pix, and i know they are VERY undetailed...I'm just trying to get the general floor plan/an idea of my HL limitations before i start adding tons of detail.

So give an opinion if you wish, but keep in mind...this is just a basic layout experiment.

The textures Cliff has done are the base and dish textures on the generator and the gear shaft thingy, and the pod textures. and other stuff too probably that i dont remember right now (sorry man)

I have a question too...is it possible to change the commander height depending on which part of the map you're looking at? because as the path gets closer to the hive, the hieght gets considerably lower, and this causes my commander veiw to see way too much near the perimeters of the map (killing my r_speeds)

How could you be worried about these shots tarnishing your good name, unless I've totally missed some hidden sarcasm?

Even for a basic floor plan/layout they look good, you should see mine (or rather you shouldn’t, it would mentally scar you).

The ‘gear shaft thingy’ looks good and I like the broken door, evidence of conflict yada yada yada.

I especially like the tunnel in the 4th screenshot, it reminds me of something from a film (vagueness = my middle name), if its all twisty spinny and stuff … I’ll shut up now.

Holy ####, that's one gem of a map, besides what gun is that you're holding?
Really like the map, it's got some briliant architecture, looking realy nice.

Great job!...I probably won't be mapping for a bit considering DOD 2.0 is coming out in...10 hours...Also...please answear me, are you using NSTR2? Cause if not, then how do u got a gun?
• pielemuispielemuis Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 72Members, NS1 Playtester
Don't think he is, the "hose" (or how he hell you say that in english) has black mesa printed on it, so it's a gun form hl.

Outstanding! How dare you say those are unworthy! I absolutely love all that visual detail.

Displacer from OpFor = Temporary welder for NS

Bah, you learn something new every day.

Architecturally, I must say it looks damn nice. I won't comment on lighting or detail since you already pointed out that it's an early test... but I will say that I really like that second to last shot as-is. From that one screen it already seems to have that NS feel about it.

One thing on the circular passageway, currently fullbright, it looked like? Well, really bright, if nothing else... I can just visualize 2 little support beams running along the top, vertically even with the rails below, shining down below with little spotlights. Add a flicker to a couple of 'em, burn one out, etc... If you know what I'm saying. I think that would look absolutely incredible in there. But, again, that's just my opinion, so it probably means nothing.

Oh, and regarding your "good name..." -- I see mapping as a personal achievement, rather than a forum for recognition. If you get that recognition, it's great, but I'd worry about being able to create something you like rather than worrying about your reputation. Again, though, just my opinion -- probably means nothing.

Nice badmofo you are really fast why do you say that you are an slow mapper?
I sent you the 2 finished textures you used for the generator and the gear shaft thingy last night and you already have posted finished screenies of them here.
Really nice badmofo but still along way to go as i know you really well bye now.

I think the "crappy pix" title was just a way to try to get people in here; to take a rare opportunity to poke holes in some crappy map shots. It looks like we can't make fun of Badmofo today though!

These shots look really promising. I love the big tube with the walkway through it, fits the "shared experience" guideline very well.

I do think the lighting needs a lot of work, but you already know that. Keep up the great work, it looks like you're cranking!
• badmofobadmofo Join Date: 2002-01-28 Member: 121Members
well, thanks guys (and especially you flayra...seeing how in the end, it's your approval .

I forgot to mention...this is the industrial section of the compound. Hence the HUGE rooms, the generators, the compressors, etc. I might make an atmosphere generator as well...depends on how much room i got. I will also have a living/community quarters.

I'll show you more pix as i get more of the layout done.

and I agree...Mapping SHOULD be a personal achievement, but if i want to get into the biz (which i do), then i need a good rep too . Anyways...trust me (and just ask cliff)...this is really bad stuff compared to what the map will look like final.

Looks good. That one reminds me of event horizon (4th down)
• pielemuispielemuis Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 72Members, NS1 Playtester
there's no water in the event horizon, love that movie btw, real tense atmosphere never a dull moment, great special fx, good story

Looks like its been infused with Evil I like a lot. be nice if that circuler corridor rotated ok sorry I'll leave you alone with my stupid ideas.

Story to event horizon was rubbish but it was a cool film visualy - good map material maybe.

Yeah guys, take a look at Mofo's UP maps, they are nuts... but this still looks like its going to be awesome. I was just wondering mofo, are you gonna add some spaces more advantageous to the aliens also? Everything so far looks straight forward, or in other words no places really for aliens to hide or use their crazy wall jumping. Just curious. Looks awesome so far. Trane

Hey, I want to get into the business, too -- I just feel I'll let my work speak for itself rather than worry about having a certain reputation. I look forward to seeing more of this map, too. If these are the early shots, heh...

I came in here hoping to make fun of some really bad map pictures, and instead I find high-quality work! You've really disappointed me, you liars!

wow mofo great map... as always

just thought i'd register to tell you =P
• badmofobadmofo Join Date: 2002-01-28 Member: 121Members
hey phobos and firegold...thanks for the props fellas (they are fello UP forum goers). And also thanx to trane...never heard of you in the UP forums...go sign up.

as for you cliff...you're SO wrong - heheheh...the map is not even 10% done. I'ld say 5. When i get the layout complete then we can say its about 30% done. THen i gotta go back and cut corners, put in details, change aspects here and there...etc.

Anyways - I'm not gonna answer any questions because i honestly don't know. I unfortunately never plan before i make a map...i'm just making it up as i go with a general floor plan in my head...so this map is at least 2 months off till completion. (to be completely honest...i have never finished a good map in under 7 months, but i'm really gonna try to push this map out the door for NS's first release)
• FiregoldFiregold Join Date: 2002-02-06 Member: 173Members
lol omg if it's not even 10% done i can't wait to see the final one =DD

btw i used to be on the UP team too =P mebe u don't remember anymore =P
• BlahmanBlahman Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 85Members, NS1 Playtester
Absolutely stunning! Nice texturing work... All i can say is the walls/buildings in the first pic seem too low/flat to me. Perhaps some taller buildings and even a tower or two will break up the flatness, if r_speeds allow.

I'd tell you how amazing those shots were, but everyone already has. So instead I'll tell you that you can miss two or three nights of sleep each week and still be healthy and productive.

Hmm its maybe time for an tiny preview of some ns sync textures again.
Yust an tiny electrics wall for an type of generator room or something its a bit pixelated as its only 192x192 in size and i tryed to crame in as much detail as possible and you can also see an tiny bit on the floor of another new one.
I made it in 2 versions.

Since I don't recall anyone actually answering this: There's no way of altering commander height. Sorry. Though it would make sense to impliment this.
• GreedoGreedo Bounty Hunter Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 37Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Wow. With all the detail crammed into those textures, a simple box room wouldn't look nearly as awful. That's some really great work there, Cliff. I can't wait to see what BadMofo does with those beauties.
