Tiny vs level 4

biobrainbiobrain Join Date: 2002-02-18 Member: 224Members
Tiny and level 4 are both soldiers. But what makes people choose level 4 instead of Tiny, I still think it should be Tiny's inability to get to places. Ex ladder climbing. It's a pretty big sacrifice to allow Tiny to climb those. I know this has been debated but nobody has started a topic on it yet.

blinky is cheaper... and i think you dont need 3 hives...

Correct Asraniel, only two hives are required in order to be able to mutate into Blinky.  Aside from that obvious advantage, there are still a few others that Blinky has over Tiny.

    1.  Blinky is a bit more discreet, therefore he is more versatile.  He could theoretically fulfill the roll of a scout as well as the role of bob, although the alien team that does that is a bit stupid.

    2.  Blinky has the power to 'blink' through obstacles, (like mines and welds) therefore giving the possibility that a well-coordinated blinker attack could entirely wipe out a Marine entrenchment.

    3.  Blinky is cheaper.

There are bound to be more advantages, but I think that showcases the point nicely.  Tiny's still great for a little brute force now and again, but Blinky's blinking ability and his lack of reliance on strength make him more versatile.

The big difference I see is that the Level 4 is likened to a soldier, with some especially nasty hardware, whereas the Level 5 is likened to a TANK (minus the large gun).

They <b><i>CAN</b></i> kick marine butt, if the marine is playing dumb, i myself have taken level 4's alone with the shotty, however... no marine stands a chance agaisn't tiny alone.  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

And of course, the possibility of a one-on-one between Mr. Shotty and Blinky is always STC.

lol, mole's just saying that because he can't take a level4 down <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->, you know as well as i mole that a marine vs a level4 is almost always death for the marine, unless you got skills, IE, me and MonsE. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

I  don't know, that blinking ability seems like a big subject to exploits
  • KidzeldaKidzelda Join Date: 2002-06-25 Member: 819Members
What exploits?I can't think of any right this second. It's limited range.Sooo, uhh...

Hey dont leave out Humbaba the shotty man! oh, er . .what was this topic about?  <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo--> . Oh yeah! The level 4 blink ability! It is an instantaneous way to move right up to your target, or past turrets. Using it does require skill. It has to be aimed at the geometry that you want to come in contact with. You get the feel down eventually. Also, it drains a butt-load of energy to blink, so you cant do super cheap thingls like blink, shoot a rocket, immediately blink, shoot another, or other stuff. And yeah, its a 3rd hive ability and any marine team thats been slacking enough to let a 3rd hive go up deserves to have a blinker lascerate their scared little human hearts.

I, for one, having seen blink, having used blink, and having had blink used against me, I can't think of a single possible exploit.  Not one.

I'm still kinda wondering how blinking works (If you oh-so-lucky PTs are allowed to say). Do you just press a key and suddenly move a certain distance? Do you set some kinda waypoint somehow? Is some crazy voodoo magic required involving sacraficing a chicken over your keyboard? Or is it something completely ingenious designed by the brilliant people who work on NS?

I would laugh except i just remembered i didn't have a clue what it meant until someone told another newbie in a thread i was keeping an eye on. So I guess it's not one of the obvious things and such. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

(Just to check that u do have the right meaning, STC = Subject to Change)

what about making tiny the turret-o-takeout machine, meaning, marines are able to outstrafe him. single marines of course. multiple marines are a target that is big enough 8)

as for how it is used . . . .I rest my case. It's a little trickier than it sounds, dependign on the environment. Sometimes, you might wanna blink right through an open doorway and your paralell to it. Well, it ends up being a very narrow slit from you Point of View. It requires precision. Even more so when moving. But thats what makes it so satisfying. When you pull off a good blink and shoot through X narrow far off space, you can pat yourself on the back. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

If you have to aim at the geometry, how can you blink through a welded door? And is it possible to blink into a wall and die?

Well, the process of blinking into a wall wouldn't kill you.... (unless Flayra adds code to make it so, or better yet, prevent it).

It's the process of a marine seeing you sticking half out of a wall and shooting you, that will kill you.

so whats to stop u from blinking out of the map? or is it u cant and just hit the wall? and why kill a lvl5 stuck in a wall if he doesnt know how to kill himself thats one alian down  <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo--> and are marines geometry?

Level 5's (Tiny) can't blink. Only level 4's (Blinky) can. To my knowledge, anyways...

C code is what's stopping you. What did you think it might be? Geometry is what it sounds like - 'the physical world' of a map. You can't blink through anything; only a straight line of sight that does not intersect the map's objects. And only Lev4 aliens have this ability.

Blink is designed to allow you bypass marine-created defenses (such as mines or turrets). Not jump through doors and walls.

Ah!  That actually clears up a few misconceptions I had about the process of blinking and its results.  But I still do have a few question that I would like oh-so-much to be answered:

Is blinking still a charge up skill where the time spent charging is directly proportional to the distance you blink?

Can you blink in any direction? (i.e. up and down kind of thing)

Is it instantaneous or is it comparable to being shot out of a cannon?

    That's all for now.

    1. Nope, you just need the energy to initiate in the first place. You travel until you hit map geometry.

    2. Yes. You can blink in 3 dimensions, which makes for interesting tactics sometimes.

    3. About instantaneous.
