Aknowledge my natural existance

Hi,

This is a first time post. I've been following NS around its beginning and I wanted to speak my intentions before NS goes public because then my oppinions will be swamped.

I intend on putting up a NS server when NS is released but I'm wondering about the system specs needed. I know my server would be capable for a regular HL server on Linux:

Pentium II 400 Mhz
128 Mb RAM
Voodoo 3 3000

but what about NS? Does it require alot of extra serving power?

And as a final question - maybe someone can think of a neat name... Maybe the little shop of Natural Selections - seeing as the server will probably be at a 8 maxplayer limit...

Friendly greetings,

Gazoo

From what I've heard, the server load shouldn't be tooooo much higher than that for, say, Counter-Strike.

I haven't heard anything about a Linux server for NS, though; I seem to recall someone saying that NSv1 wouldn't be released with one, but that it would appear soon after.

One very important factor you left out of your system specs, when it comes to serving, is your available bandwidth, though.

    Hi,

Unless NS differs from the average HL line consumption then I've already calculated the consumption...

I got 1 mbit down and 256 kbits up which averages to 7-8 players....

Pretty catchy. You could go for
The Little Shop of Bobs ,

as a shorter name though. =)

    /me acknowledges your existence.

Hey, for a server name, how about "Little Shop of Flayras"?

A little extra ram wouldn't hurt, but other than that, it looks good.

By nature, NS is going to have more models, more effects, more on-screen HUD stuff, more sounds (maybe), and more map-mapliness than something like CS or HLDM. Coupled with the commander mode, I would guess that servers running NS would need to be a bit more powerful to run it as well as they would HL or CS. Plus, I have no idea how much of the stuff in the game is done client-side versus server-side.

I would agree with the suggestion to get more RAM, though.

    Hey,

Well I'm not really considering upgrading the server at all since of course it's non-profit and well... If it work - it works - if it doesn't - too bad It used to be my old PC and it cause me enough smackers to buy a new one - so hopefully the specs will suffice... I think it ought to for a linux server...

A linux build is planned and was discussed in this thread.
Flayra said that it probably comes out a few days/weeks later than the windows-version.

i havent heard about it or i always though that NS would be games of 16 vs 16 and great battles and such, but my question is, the 3 vs 3 or 4 vs 4 are also as fun as the lots of players battles ? for the frontline chronicles i read PTs have had some of these and they also look very intense and great

Yes, Blueman. Generally, once you have at least 6-8 people in the server, games start to get really fun. I'd say that, personally, the best games are usually with between 12 and 16 people, though. It really keeps you on your toes and the action is always intense.

    Hey...

Hmm some good suggestions - although it doesn't have to with "Little shop of...". I just felt it was fitting due to the limitation of 8 players. Whenever I'd host a LAN this capacity would of course be jacked up to 16 due to 8 connecting through a local LAN... But still... Maybe I should rather use the server for another mod? It all depends on how well NS will be supported once it gets out and if people would even bother with this tiny german server...

are u saying u been watching this mod since 2 years ago or however long they started it ago, and u have only 4 posts?

but as for your server, sure go ahead, ppl like servers of everysize, i myself prefer 12-18 or so, otherwise theres to much or too little action, but we'll see how NS turns out

Can you seriously have a server be both a LAN server and an Internet Server at the same time? Because whenever I host a game on my LAN, and make it an Internet Game, everyone on the lan has to connect through the internet... I would really love to hear an answer for this.

    Hey,

Elowind - Might sound incredible but yes... I've been following it for a long time checking in now and again too see the progress... I mean - you don't have to believe me - I just thought I'd mention it... But I usually don't involve myself with oppinions or posts since most mods have enough support and don't interest me enough to keep me posting... Desert Crisis is another example... Followed it for a long time, but never posted...

f3rret... I think it ought to work. The whole LAN is behind a router and technically you can connect to an internet server from a LAN. Which would make 8 from the outside and 8 from the inside...

I've just had problems configuring the server properly so people outside can find it... They can join - no prob - but I could never make it show up in any of the game browsers...

When you start the server, do you set it up as a LAN game then? Then the people from the outside just try to connect to your internet IP address?

Another question, do your LAN computers have non routable IP addresses? As in, 192.168.x.x ?
  • Jack-0Jack-0 Join Date: 2002-05-01 Member: 563Members
to have ppl connect both lan and internet game... you must host a internet game otherwise... ppl who have the ip address and try to connect from the outside will get a very plesent messege stating that it is a lan class game and that your r not connecting via lan... you r not conneting period...
