But I purposefully don't put it too high, for the same reason.
NS should make their own flashlight cause the default HL flashlight just plain sucks. It's just cause it makes you this big glowing target while when you view your flashlight all you see is a single lit point. What's up with that!?
There is a brightness help program in your NS folder called gamma_tune.exe, I sugest you all use it
As for the scoreboard lightshield, I use that in a HA squad, all those welders, sore eyes jsut cant see for ages after they see it I thought i was the only one, and that i was wierd
Its easy to spot when someone uses high gamma. What level do you use? Mine has never been touched from default, and i use the monitors own settings to adjust it. BUT the darker the better imo.
I use the flashlight on in CC hive on eclipse to cover the vent. Even if they see the light and don't come out, they aren't parasiting rines or needling turrets. Also, its fun to turn the light off and see if any nasties think i've gone
I'd like to see more maps make use of darkness. Most maps are generally brightly lit, with only the occasional dark tunnel or corridor. Surely in the infested areas of the map it should be darker anyway, as the infestation will grow over the lights?
Dark areas where hideous alien monstrosoties can leap out at you without warning adds greatly to the atmosphere of the game.

I dont use high gammar. i mean what is the point, i play NS for atmosphere not for kills. lol
I also use the flashlight quite regulary but generaly only in a secure place like the marine start lookin at vents. I think this would b nice if it was fixed.
i believe those who crank up the gamer are just sad. i feel sorry for them. I would have to agree on making your gamma to high could classify as a cheat, i sure don't do it because NS is suppose to be played in the darkness. I myself use the flashlight for many things. Such as: a diversion, a heavy-armor marine can use his flash light and all aliens would attack him, yet while attacking the heavy-armored marine a squad of jet pack marines waltz into their base (seriously they dance with those things on) and destroy their poor hive, while the aliens have no time to respond and if they did they would die from all the bullets flying around.
I tweak gamma a little, and I use the flashlight. Mind you my screen is set way dimmer than most, so yeah, I gamma tweak untill I can see well in lit areas. Any more than that and stuff looks washed out and crappy, and who wants that? It also seems to me the NS flashlight is pretty bright and usefull.....
I want to know why people use gamma h4x in the first place? None of the maps (except maybe a corridor or two scattered over the entire game) have profound darkness that even so much as necessitate the flashlight, let alone a gamma hack. I can understand people using gamma boosters if their monitor or is particulaly dark, that's only fair, but imho, anyone who uses one for another reason, to me, is as bad as some lame wallhack or aimbot using nubbin.
Ive always wondered about wallhacks, wouldnt it be confusing to see a whole map of just floors? running forward and suddenly stopping because you cant see the wall infront of you... lol
Gamma "H4x" as you put it is a problem we are going to have to live with, because there is no way they would lock the value on the game because people do have bad monitors that would make their game VERY VERY dark indeed.
Yes, the only problem is that you are illuminated in the view of others, and no HL mod to date has been able to fix this, don't see what the problem is, Q2 was fine with showing where other's flashlights went.

QUOTE (//KEm1KaL\\ @ Jun 16 2003, 09:13 AM)

Yes, the only problem is that you are illuminated in the view of others, and no HL mod to date has been able to fix this, don't see what the problem is, Q2 was fine with showing where other's flashlights went.

Yes, the Specialists HAS fixed this problem. Can you adjust yourself so that you could actually see the areas your teammates are pointing with their flashlights to be more brighten (so that their flashlights would light up the area they are pointing?)
And then an idea:
How about that your brightness would be dynamicly adjusted according to the light level in this way:
When you are in a bright room, you would see easily the areas in the room. but if there would be a dark area just outside the room (for example a shadow or just a dark room), it would be really hard to see anything there.
If you come from a bright area to dark area you would not see anything for a short while. Your eyes would have to settle down for the dark. After a couple of (10-20 sec) seconds you would see normaly. If you would sit in a dark area for around a minute you would see really well everything.
Also if you are in a dark room and you use flashlight you would see well as long as you keep the light on. but when you turn them off (if you hear a skulk coming, for example), you would not see nothing.
Also pointing your light to another player (teammate or skulk, no difference), the target would get a bit blinded (just like in the real life)
There's a fun thingymod that turned the flashlight into a kind of motion tracker. You hit the button and you hear a low-pitched beeping noise every second or so. When you move the spotlight part over an area where there's an alien, the beeping becomes higher and speeds up. It's useful because it works through walls and stuff, but has a limited range. Also after about a minute it turns itself off.
I still think I should be able to blind skulks with the flashlight beam. Obscure half the screen with a giant lense flare
Lol nice one lets blind the skulks! They should make it a very bright light make it like a flash bang [CS(sorry had to compare it to something)] but you can still hear, and they should make an ability upgraded from somewhere who knows that can make it so the alien becomes no longer bothered by the light and charges you and in a few seconds your missing a leg....
If they make it so it can blind team mates we all know there will be at least one jack*** that will shine it in everyones screen geting them really **** and there won't be an admin in the server so he or she can do it when ever he or she wants where ever he or she wants. Like if your killing a hive or chasing a skulk and you go blind what happens? YOU DIE!

As you say, it makes you conspicious, so not all the time, but it's definately underused in my opinion.
Hell, it works fine as a really rudimentary shooting site in dark places.
