How to do it from a LAN.
I just got done reading every post on this topic since 1.04 came out and all I saw was bits and pieces. For the longest time (a week) I could not figure out how to start an Internet server from a LAN. I finally got it working. I am not at my computer right now so I am going off my memory.

First is my specs:
Verizion DSL
4 port linksys router. (Who said you couldn't have a server from a Linksys router?)
OS: Win98se

First you need: sv_lan 0
Goto your NS folder and you will see a file called listenserver.cfg. Open this in notepad and make the change and save it.

Next click on Start Menue - Run - Type winipcfg
This will open a box that shows your IP's. In the drop down box select your Network card. You will be refering to this information throughout this process.

Open IE and type in the IP of your Gateway. You can find this in your winipcfg.
This will bring you to your router settings. It may ask you for your user name and PW. Please refer to the manual that came with your router.
Click on the tab that says Advance - Click on the Tab that says forwording. This will bring you to a screen that alows you to do port forwarding.

In the first box it ask you to enter a name. This can be anything you want. The next box ask you to enter the port range for incomming. The ports for half-life mods and the ones that worked for me are 27000-27020. The next box is for outgoing ports. Enter the same ports. You will then see two check boxes. Check them both. The box will ask you to enter the last set of didgits in your Lan IP. You will find it in your winipcfg. (192.1.1.) You will also see a check box that says enable. Check this one also.

Hit apply button at bottom of screen.

Go back out of the advance features.
Click on the DHCP tab. Click on the disable option. Hit apply and exit out of IE.

Depending on the kind of Linksys router, some of these things may be in different places but this is the basic.

You are now ready to start the NS server.
For a dedicated server:
Click Start Menue
Click Program files
Click Natural Selection
Click on Dedicated Server
While starting up right down the IP address so that you can tell your freinds.

For the other kind of server that you can join from the saem computer:
Click Start Menue
Click Program files
Click Natural Selection
Start Natural Selection
Click on Multiplayer
Click on Net games
Choose your map, settings and click start server.

Feel free to reply with any questions or comments. I will do my best to answer them.

winipcfg should not exist in XP afaik. It's a Windows ME/98-5 tool. In windows 2000/XP you use the console command ipconfig instead. It basically does the same things but it doesn't have a nice gui so you need to know some commandline switches to see/manipulate the information that the command can give you.

    ipconfig /all

for instance gives you all information about all you network interfaces. see

    ipconfig /help

    for more info =)

As I continue my learning on how to make a server I learn that you need to download the NS 1.04 dedicated server update patch from the website. Just because you think you have the 1.04 version, doesn't mean you have it for a server.

    Why download it:
Want to run a LAN server.
Want to run a Dedicated server.
Want to run a server that you can join to from the same computer.

If you do not get this update your server will run version 1.00.

These instructions will help you start your server even if it's not on a LAN.

Can we get this topic webbed. Or another like.

under the Run dialog, type "cmd" first (without the quotes ofcourse). That will open a command prompt, from their, type in ipconfig and hit enter.
