The Geforce fx 5200 is newer, but these models are the lower end models of the fx series. The higher end models are the fx 5800-900. The Geforce 4 would be the way to go, because in "most" cases the higher end models of the Geforce 4 beat the 5200. But then again the geforce 4 is the 4200..If I were you, I'd spend most of my money on the graphics card and go with a RADEON 9800 PRO <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

ATI Radeon is the way to go. I love my Radeon 9000 pro. A friend of mine has a gfx and a similar system he has 1.8 ghz I have 1.7, he has 256 ram so do I He has XP home so do I. Basicly only difference is gfx cards and I notice minor differences and the cards cost about the same too. Oh and ATI cards can't be heard from 10 miles away.

Save your money, your ear drums, and a lot of frustration: Buy an ATi Radeon 9500 Pro.

A friend of mine has a 5200 and it runs like a charm. Go figure.

and people think that ati's numbering system is confusing. Just because 9500>9600

Why is nVidia being so confusing to its customers?

    FX5800>GeForce4 Ti4600>FX5400>GF4 Ti4400>FX5200>GF4MX
    more or less.

What CForrester said: get a 9500pro (PRO) if you can still find them.

Geforce FX 5200 is a rabid dog, stay away from it. Its worse then the Ti4200.

Incidentally, the FX 5900 beats the radeon 9800 hands down.

ALthough why you would suggest that when he said he cant afford fx is beyond me.

The fx5600 is a goodish buy at around £110 I think.

yeah the FX 5600 ultra would be my choice. It's around the level of a 9600 pro, beats it in quite a few games, and is actually cheaper (200 euro for the FX 5600 ultra vs 210 for the 9600 pro). Don't be fooled by reviews on the net. Nvidia went back and changed the fx 5600 ultra design (flip chip and raised the clockspeeds) this gives quite a bit more performance while most reviews on the i-net are using the older version, that never made it retail afaik. Also regardless if ATI is faster, I've been digging around on the net deciding what card to get and i read quite a few posts in hardware forums about people using an ATI card having driver problems or problems with the motherboard and the card (granted it was mostly problems with a 9700 pro). Seems like ATI still has to work on their drivers a bit.
