  Find out what his sound card is also - this is very likely to be the issue. Make sure:
  
  1) Soundcard has latest drivers
  2) EAX is turned off in NS config.cfg file: s_eax 0
  3) If still occuring, move sound card to different PCI slot.

  I suggest you try to play Halflife for 10 minutes, and see if the problem is with Halflife, or only Natural Selection. Do you get any kind of error message before the black screen ?
  
  Your system shouldn't really have any problems if you have the latest drivers as was suggested above.

  Hi People, im the Impact Wolf's on about. dont get no Error Message and it doesnt black screen, just locks and Screeches down teh headphones.. im gonna <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> the comp in a minute, tried all of the stages and nothing worked... newest s.card drivers but nothing happened..

  WELL i just had a action packed HL Deathmatch game and it seemed Fine.. actully better than usuall. so it is just NS... i wonder if it would be fixed in 1.1

  hmm there was somebody who said once you have installed the mod... now uninstall it again... everything like the directory and everything..
  
  then reinstall it... and this can fix things like crashes..

  Also, double check the \ns\config.cfg setting of:
  
  s_eax
  
  and
  
  s_a3d
  
  make sure BOTH are set to '0'
  
  (that's a zero)
  
  and try again. If both are set to 0 already, try setting A3D to 1, and if it was already set to 1, set it to 0. There are 4 possible combinations, and one is sually the magic number for someone.

  I got the same problem due to high cpu temperature...
  Some mods require more system ressources than others and you may check
  if cooling is working fine on your computer...
  
  My problem was a bad cpu cooler installation...

  Just going to point out the big bugger... the desktop shortcut...
  Just about everyone's heard what happens when you use the standard shortcut: anything and everything!
  
  Also, just to clarify, you're using a GeForce 256 AND a GeForce 2 Ti?
  Anyone ever tried playing NS with 2 video cards?

  no im pretty sure what he means is he has tried using both individually.... to see if it was the gfx card messed up...

  as a warning, the desk top shortcut does one VERY specific thing:
  NS will not run.
  the syptoms are:
  trying to create a game and the only maps you have are the HLDM maps.
  trying to join a server and you get an error that basicaly tells you that you don't have the game installed (or uptodate, don't remember which one).
  
  I simply don't want false info out there (I have seen 'don't use the desktop icon' as peoples solution to nearly everything)

  i've had much worse problems than that with the desktop shortcut...
  o' course, that was on a VERY weird setup... a beta OS, a v. bad gfx card, guess it was just that
