<div class="IPBDescription">I know I do, miss my nub self.</div> I remember my n00b days, they were so much fun. I actually went back one time and faked being a n00b on a server to see if it felt the same, to ask the same stupid questions, but it didnt work. The n00b feeling was gone. I miss that feeling. As I can remember, my first map was ns_bast (My current favorite map!) and I played as aliens, obviously since the marine team was stacked.
Hold on let me say something here. I had not seen any pictures from this game EVER. NONE. My friend (Huntress) on CS told me to go dowload it, so I did. I told my brother to go ahead and install this while I go down and eat, cuz I was hungry. As I came back up, it was on my desktop and my brother said, dont play it, sucks, play CS. I tried it out anyways, and it took me a couple tries cuz the desktop shortcut was bugged, so I went in the start menu cuz I was like WTH...why isnt this game working. It finally worked and I guessed something was wrong with the desktop thingy, so I'll just reinstall it (I found out it was bugged later). I got on and dove into the game.
I had arrived at aliens hive, engine. I saw a skulk (Which I didnt know, I was going OOoo...cuz I didnt see any pictures). I asked him some questions...
ME: So errm...what do I do?
Other Dude: Hide.
Me: Then what?
Other Dude: Wait until a marine comes by, jump out and bite him.
Me: Err ok.
So off I went, and I found a cozy little hiding spot in the engine room vent, and the dude looked over at me and said to go somewhere else, because that vent was at our hive. So I ran further into the vent, and came by the marine elevator, I went out. I heard a lot of beeps, and droning, and one some radio thingys (Medpack, stuff like that..). I pushed the elevator button up and rode the elevator up, cuz I didnt know that I could wall climb. I got up, and found their whole team stareing right at me, and I got gunned down...that sucked, but it was SO COOL!!!! Well, I'm gonna stop here...this is turning into a rant.
But one thing I must say that is pretty weird. I played hera, and I didnt even see half the map until I played the map about eight times, serious. I never saw past vent hive, never saw past hera reception. Thats it. Once I found the places beyond that I was like whoa...thats cool. Yes, I didnt even listen to orders, I was such a cute wittle nubbie!
Place your memories or comment if you wish...just had to get this off my chest...

I got Half life, then downloaded cs, ns, svencoop, and some other game.. I proceeded to install all 3, and then tried cs... I though (my opinion) that it suxed, and I'd play swat3 if I wanted a game like that.. I then tried sven and liked that, I found a ns server that had in the rules not to be mean to newbies, and I've been playing there.. I think I went marine the first time.. but as I said, I can't remeber much of the first game.. I know I was amazed though..

lol Its funny you should post this. I just got back from 2 days of playing with NSPlayer as my tag so I could do reviews on my thread about Newbie friendly servers. I went under cover so to speak. I was happily going along shooting up aliens and chomping marines and enjoying myself. I was doing well until I went into the EC server and Fam thought I was a hacker or something lol. But thats all straightened out now lol.
Yea it was fun. As I said somwhere b4, people actualy expiriemented around and tried out new things, rather then be brainwashed into the single strat games we see now.
PS my first map was NS_Nancy as a marine. Best game I ever had, my first one. You didint know what to expect so you had that chill run down your spine every now and then.

Then a bunch of gigantic aliens came running in screaming and blew everything up.
Of course I never read the manual, so I didn't know what those were.
My first game of aliens, I spent all my time trying to learn what each alien was like.
I turned into a gorge, and thought he was a fighter, so I attacked the marines...and died, "wow, that guy sucks, no wonder he's so cheap to change into" were my thoughts at the time. Then I went lerk, hoping it might be the big black acid alien...eh nope. I was like "why does this guy fall so slow" then "Oh hey, I can fly, cool" after that "Ouch, that guy died fast too". Then a couple games later I asked
"Hey, what are those flashing icons on the side for?".
"Upgrades" the team replied.
Confused, I was like "Ah, so how do they work?"
They explained how I could choose them and such.
Eventually I learned the game well, and moved on to the intriciaties of gorging("how do I shot web?") and commandering ("which one is the observatory again?"), and became skilled at those as well, though my lack of a microphone limits my commanding to this day.
Ah well, fun times, though you can never truly get that feeling of newbish awe once you learn the game. <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif'><!--endemo-->
I kept my nick as NSPlayer for a week or two until I finally got a general idea of most of the maps, as well as the different classes/upgrades/etc - no point getting a rep as a newb. (First impressions last, don't they?)
WTH IS THAT!!!!! <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo-->
Anywho, my first map was NS_Bast and I spawned on the marine team. All the upgrade structures were built and I just stumbled around in awe trying to "use" alot of them to see what happened. There were other marines to wandering around, who looked just as lost as me and didn’t even bother to read the manual.
My first encounter with the aliens was a tower of OT's, about 6 of them stacked up firing at me. My first thought was, "Wow, they should really fix that bug". I expressed this concern with other people on the server and one response came back "Aha NEWB!".. and I thought "Aren’t we all newbs?". <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Later on I created my own game on a LAN so I could test the aliens out. The thing that urked me was I couldn’t do anything to experiment with the aliens...I couldn’t evolve...I couldn’t build.... I couldn’t even use parasite. Same went for marines when I wanted to try out being a commander.
So to make a long story short I loved this game for months.....its one of those games I lost alot of sleep over because I just couldn’t stop playing it.

So had to try aliens first off. Didn't disappoint even though Marine had the resource bug and server pings were shocking! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I still must say, there is no other experience in gaming that compares to being cloaked or high in the rafters and Pouncing on a marine. Sheer adrenaline rush for both the alien and marine and extreme fun. I can't wait for cloaking in 1.1 to relive that <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
So many emotions in such a short time.
0.00-0.25 seconds pass. First its awe "WOW never seen anything so huge before in a game."
0.25-0.50 seconds pass. Then its surprise "you stand there for a quarter secondand gawk at it."
0.50-1.00 seconds pass. Then your sences kick back in and fear starts to take hold. "omg"
1.00-1.25 seconds pass. Fear turns to panic. "OMG!"
1.25-1.50 seconds pass. General marine chaos. "OH SHaT, OMG RUUUUUUN AHHHHHHHH!"

Mate that link is invalid, I wouldn't mind a read of it if you can find an alternative link.
Cheers.
Must...wait...for...ns...to...be...on...HL...2...
It will own...just imagine this.
On one of the new maps, ns_fart, a quirkly attack is commincing at your base (thats the new alien type, its a even bigger form of the onos!). Your position in the missle silo is held tight with turrets and level five upgrades (To counter the new aliens, the marines now have two extra upgrades!). You spawn in in a blue flash, and see a marine fly out of door in front of you, and slam aginst the wall to your left, tumbling down a air duct with the limp body physics. You take a couple steps back in fear of the quirkly, and you stumble over a jetpack. Three Quirkli (Plurl of quirkly) charge into your base, and the last one sets its eyes on you. You launch off with your jetpack up further into the missle silo, and you read your full count. Its low, and empty. You start freefalling down, and you reach out your hand for a catwalk around the silo. You pull yourself up, and stare down. The carnage is amazing. The Half-Life 2 blood and gore is disgusting. You look down only to see your conrads being torn apart by the menencing Kharaa. One man suits on a jetpack, and jets off, only to be eaten alive by the Kurni (The Kurni are small flesh eating insects launched by the gorge as its new ability.) His flesh tears from the small insects, and his screams echos. His body goes limp and his jetpack thrusts upward into the ceiling, crushing his head. Staring in shock, you think to yourself. "DAMN THIS NS GAME IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!"
lol hope you liked that. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

It was just my clan's thread from release date with some good first impressions of the game, mine included <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
I, too, remember fondly when I started this game. A year before this game released, I was a hardcore CS player. All the people on my floor at college played it and I too couldn't resist, but I burned out on it and gave my CS retail cd to my new roommate this year. Then, one day I saw a mention of NS on Penny-Arcade's website, and decided to give it a look. I thought it looked interesting so I got my cd back from my roommate and decided to give it a try. I tried being a marine at first, but wasn't too impressed. I fell in love with the game, however, the first time I played skulk. I had so much fun hanging from the ceiling and dropping down on unsuspecting marines. I became addicted and so did my roommate as a result of me. I've been playing since 1.01 and don't plan on quiting anytime soon.
I believe my first map was Eclipse, still my favorite. I miss the old days when I didn't know the maps and everythign was a shock and a surprise. Nothing was scarier then turning a corner into a dead end and seeing three ha's staring back at you. Hehe, I still remember complaining that the game was buggy at first because I couldn't get guns from the arms lab. (No, I didn't read the manual, never have before playing a game for the first time) Hehe, I miss my ignorance, it was so much easier to enjoy then as everything was new. Oh, and for the record, I too nearly fell out of my chair the first time I saw an onos.
<!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo--> My God! It just won't die! <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo-->
I know it sounds a bit extreme but when you first start playing a new game there is so much to discover and see and learn.
I remember bothering my Kharaa teammates about just spawning and wondering how to evolve to a skulk. I saw them in the manual and thought they looked awesome..this was met by general laughter but not by criticism, as 1.0 was just out and a lot of people were learning.
I was even foolish enough to try comm'ing but lord knows I suck at RTS games and comming just isn't for me.
So I say I'd love to be a n00b again, just for the sheer thrill of discovering all the abilities and everything.
Maybe that's why I'm looking forward to 1.1 so much, to learn new tricks and strategies!
PS: Nice thread <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
The hardest thing was setting up the keys. After that, joined a server, and forgot what keys I'd bound. Hehehe.
I went kharaa, and spawned next to someone that promptly evolved into a lerk. He flapped off and away. I pressed random keys, and through sheer chance, managed to evolve into a lerk too. Sadly I didn't remember how to flap my wings.
A thoroughly embarassing experience, but fortunately the lerk I saw was the only other person on the server, so my blushes were spared.
Later that day I was on ns_caged. I wasn't given any orders, so I went about my way exploring the map. When I discovered there were walls and vents to weld, I promptly asked the commander until I got a welder. Then, to my teammates' annoyance, I began welding every wall and vent that I could, even if it didn't have the flashy "weld here" kind of icon. Then the invasion began. Back at base, large bi-pedal creatures with long, blade-like forearms began spitting large globs of hurtful stuff at me (how dare they) and my teammates (good, shoot them, they know what they're doing). Then the Onos arrived. I breifly glimpsed this massive beast as it ran by in the hallway and charged thru a few of my fellow 'rines, and of course I was like "Woah that was big". Then I decided to see if the coast was clear, so I walked out of the base with a teammate following behind me. I look to the left of the entrance and see a partially-invisibly creature that resembled the giant rhino-creature I had seen before.

The first time any Marine player expiriences his first encounter with Mr.Onos is always classic.

That fits in perfectly here, as I realized it was probably not the best idea to be out of the base with that slightly invisibly behemoth there. So I promptly turned around and ran back to base. My lemming-for-a-comrade, however, was rather unfortunate as the creature mauled him to his utter demise. Then he charged the base and proceeded to end the game. I didn't mind being killed by the beast over and over again though, for I saw its raw power and strength to overcome any obstacle. I've played as Kharaa for nearly every game ever since. <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo-->
I joined marines with my bro. I was so confused but i was a cs player so i thought i could go good. I saw other marines around me with big green suits ( i didnt relise it was ha <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->) i wanted one. I was asking the comm for one and then out of the phase gate a giant alien creature <!--emo&::onos::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tiny.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tiny.gif'><!--endemo--> attacked and killed half the marines and ran back through the phase. (Im like WTH!! thats things scary)
2 minutes later that same thing comes through the phasegate the whole team is shooting it so i start to. It runs off half our team is like gw gw we fought it off. Then suddenly 7 of those giant creatures and some black thing that stands like a marine ( <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo--> ) came from front door bit. We had lots of mines the fade fired something nd then the server crashes. We had tons of mines and it was so fun ive been hooked ever since <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Next... we had furious waves of xenociding skulks. The last remnants of our team were terminated quite fast.
This must have been the coolest of my first games.
Talking to the OTHER team in voicecomm? You mean now I'll have to mute TWICE as many people for playing "Knight Rider" music? The pain...
Thats because of the maps increased complexity and size.
Its, you might have guessed, a huge maze, and it changes its shape (1024 possibilites).
And I also remember sensory chambers were very common...almost always seem to be able to get cloaking or advanced hive sight if i wanted. One of the things that marked the end of my newbie days were the death of the sensory chamber. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Next time I went aliens, and got hooked even more. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
