Should Global Chat Be Disabled When Game Starts?

Some points here... read.
Maybe it shouldn't be completely removed, but there should be at least an option for the admin to turn it #on or #off. (If there already is, please forgive my ignorance and please tell me how to turn it off)

I rarely ever see good use of global chat. Most common uses are:
1. Binds like "visit my clans homepage" or "I pwn j00" and other useless stuff
2. OMGZ WE LOSTZ NOOB GORG PUT SENSORY FIRSTZZ WE R D00M3D!!!11
3. (after killing someone from the other team) You suck!
4. 2 Clanmates chatting like if the were on IRC.
5. People whining about how much their team suck.
6.(For the people who would like more atmosphere in NS) Its not like the Kharaa speak human languages anyway.

In case I didn't make myself clear, I don't want it to be completely removed from the game, just an option any admin can turn it #on-#off.

I'm pretty sure there is a cvar like that, which filters the level of chat shown. It's client-side however, so it can't be used to control what other people see.

It would be good if it was server side, because I bet when 1.1 comes out, lots of people will shout at gorges for laying down a sensory chamber first in global chat, and we all know sensory chambers won't help if they are building siege outside the hive and the aliens need to rush in and kill the marine's outpost. If its client side, you won't see it, but everyone else will.

    Global chat could be removed.

There is always the ready room, and probably would help to improve the game some...

    My thoughts exactly.
Chat/Spam/Whine/Complain in the Ready Room, and pick a team to PLAY the game.

Global chat is needed. I know u might get all fustrated with all the spam...but you get used to it. Myself i dont even pay attention to it unless it says my name

You think global chat is needed, just like many more people do.
Thats why all I am asking is a server-side variable.

You said it yourself, you don't pay attention to it unless it has your name in the lines. But when someone talks to you in global, It can't be about anything useful to the team, probably just gossip. It takes up space. On people with slower computers, running on 640x480 resolutions, half their screen's space is taken with useless text.

Sometimes with the spam/flood/gossip going on a note from the commander/gorge goes unnoticed.

There are many reasons I can think of to include a "noglobalchat" variable, but I can't think of any reasons not to.

I think there is a client-side command that controls the amount of time the text stays on your screen. If they did add that command to turn off global chat I don't think it should be server-side...makes more sence to be client side.

Maybe the admins don't want the aliens whining at global chat OMGZ N00B GORG PUT SENSORY WE ARE D00M3D!!!11 thus making marines research motion tracking right away?

I'm sorry man.. but this is stupid even as an option.

The problem isn't global chat. If you take global chat away, it won't change the "problem" as you see it.

What about using global chat to try and confuse the enemy? More than once I have said on global "OMG, WTH did you drop sens" right after our gorge dropped DC ... and trust me, it can work wonders lol. The key thing, is never trust what I say over global ... its almost always a lie

I understand both sides. But sometimes theres some information that you might need from the other team.

    It's kind of a necessary evil. :/

Yes, I have to agree with sirus on this one *slap*

Acutally in 1.1 sensory would be the perfect counter to the marines building a seige cannon outside your base/hive. Drop a sensory around the corner from the marines. Then you could simply walk up to the seige or the tf unnoticed and most likely get of 4-5 good bites in if not more before the marines even notice you. Or better yet, just kill the marines building there. Assuming you were talking about 1.1 If so situations like the one you describe probly will be close to non existant since in 1.1 there will be no best starting chamber (or theres not supposed to be anyway). I really dont see any big enough issues to warrent putting in a server side cvar.

It's a social thing, and one of the goals of NS is to create a fun, sociable environment. This IS still a GAME and it's still supposed to be FUN.

To be quite honest I like congratulating someone for killing me if the kill is nice.
Same way I like to taunt or brag when making a kill.
It's always a shame when someone abuses chat or annoys other players.
But that's players, not the game...shame really?

PS: Isn't there a command to ignore text chat? There should be like a.. "/ignore DOOManiac" command. (Even if only for DOOManiac )
It would ignore all text/voicechat/whatnot. May already be in there...just don't know about it.

It would be nice if some sort of spam/flood filter could be added to the chat system to prevent the same message being repeated endlessly.

An obscenity filter wouldn't hurt, either (sadly).

    Thar ya be, ME<--ShootHere!!.

hud_saytext_time 0 would eliminate all text messages team and global. Then turn down voice communication. Easy as pi.

Are you running at 640x480? Text in the middle of the screen?

    [edit]

Let me tell you ... it's ALOT better than having text that is hard to read. TONS better. *tries to think of a word bigger than "tons"* It's uber-tons-alot-more-better. *shuts up*

If players are spoiling the game with spam then it is up to the admin to gag, slap or kick them as appropriate. I do remember the pain of joining a game where one of the opposite team was spamming a huge long line of text about how he will own us all because we cant see all thank to his annoying message spam. He was right, the text filled the screen. There was no admin there and no contact info on the server so I left and never returned.
I well admined server will not put up with people spoiling the game.
