My first game of NS was before 1.04, but I'm not sure which release it was. All I remember is that it was still popular to drop a TF in main base at the beginning of the round. We then proceeded to march to the nearest res node and turret farmed it. We basically wandered around and farmed res nodes, but I don't remember if we actually won or lost.

Does a server play this map? I would like to see it, its always fun to walk in a maze, yes it is.

What a terrific thread. I'm thinking back to the first time I ever played a partially-completed pre-alpha build. It was December of 2001, and the guys were rushing like mad trying to get ready for the Valve Mod Expo in california. I joined Flayra's test server, and was presented with ns_bast. I mainly stumbled around gawking at at the incredible brushwork and the amazing glowy gamma effect Flay had coded in that made everything so contrasted and lifelike. I saw my first particle system (an open nozzle) and just stood there staring at it like a goof. Then flayra came running around the corner as a placeholder gorge and spit me to death.

Pwned.

The best was that feeling of "I'm gonna DIIIEE!" the first few games as a marine. Of course, those games were few and far between because I just couldn't stand to join the team that already had an 8 man advantage so I usually played alien for the first few games.

Of course, back then we did things like sensory first so we could get cloaking.

Ah, I love remembering the old times. It was on NS_Nancy, and back then, if you wanted a shotgun, you got one. Every res node had turrets and we fought over messhall for about two hours with auto tracking sieges, man was it a LONGGGGG game.

Three of my mates actually approached the egg and surrounded it, and all of a sudden a big fat cow spawned right in front of them, letting out an enormous roar! Earliest game I remember was on Bast, I watched that intro thing and had the game kind of figured out, I remember I joined marine cause someone told me it was easier, our base was repeatedly rushed by aliens and I got killed so many times. Finally we stopped their rushing and I remember following everyone around. If my partner died, I always died right after.

Went on forever till we finally lost Some big scary aliens killed us, later I discovered those were Onos lol.

I think I played CS after that to at least feel like I had some talent.

First Map: Don't remember i think eclipse
First Class: skulk ofcoarse, but as soon as i found out you could evolve i went lerk and never turned back.
I picked up the game pretty quicky, and used to kill heavies with bite/spike. The marines like always won...but it was still uber fun. I actully didn't even play the marines untill i had played the game for about a month.

I read about NS in Penny-arcade and thought that it sounded like an fps that I might actually like. I detest killing for the sake of killing but NS seemed to have enough teamplay an mood to be interresting. I hadn't played any multiplay games at all when I started (except for the old Discworld MUD) and I remeber being sooo high on adrenaline. My nerves was a wreck and I twitched at every sound. There was a couple of times my finger slipped while guarding, fireing a burst at empty air and spooked my squad mates enough to make them spin around and start fireing untill I told them I just had slipped

My very first game was on ns_nothing and I went alien first. The very first place I spawed was on the bottom floor of viaduct. Believe me when I say thats probably one of the weirdest places to begin your ns career. I don't think I even saw the cargo bay that round.

the first game i ever played was in a LAN, at my school every students comp. was in one room , itwas a 1 on 1 just to check things out, then later when we got about 6 people, we played a serious game, i remember a specific moment, where was evovling to an Onos, i had my 2 allies right besides me, well 2 rines came shot them, then they notice me after some time, but too late they only got to shoot some rounds before *poop* i was Onos, they backed up and i ran them down

I guess I'm the only one who RTFM... Anyways, I started late (1.03) out of simple boredom with CS. I saw NS and said "If it looks like StarCraft it must be good." I was right. I soon found myself looking back with disgust on my days of mindless deathmatching of CS. Anyways, my first game was as a Marine. My CS skills of reaction and aiming helped a lot at nailing those hapless Skulks, but I didn't know much about evasion, strategy, or even the tech tree (the manual is kind of confusing there). I just followed the team around, and now that I think of it, I provided some pretty decent fire support even with the HUGE default muzzle flash. Marines were easy for me to get into, because I was also playing AvP2 and other less realistic games than CS at the time. Aliens were a different story. I was very used to owning entire servers in Aliens vs. Predator 2 as an alien because of my incredible speed and graceful movement (honestly, even if it sounds like bragging). NS was a small change, but had some big effects. I remember being mowed down as an uncarapced Skulk and thinking "Good God! How am I supposed to take down ranged enemies when I have no ranged attacks?" Even though the manual said Gorges are builders, I tried Gorge thinking "The attack can't be THAT bad, and I need the long range power to fight these Marines!" I was wrong, but unlike other nubcaeks I learned my lesson after the first time, even though I wasn't chewed out by my 4-man team (there was no other Gorge, they actually got mad when I wouldn't go Gorge again). My first map was ns_caged. I really don't like it or hate it. I do know that my favorite map was ns_nothing. Still is, now because of the variety in tactics possible, then because of the drab atmosphere that implied doom... or something like that.

I miss getting completely lost on every map. They seemed huge and when I was the last man/skulk alive from the original group - (if in doubt follow someone and hope they know what they're doing) creeping about having no clue where I was going. Getting to the end of a twisting vent and seeing this huge, cavarnous room with a strange metal object on the other side.
Later I worked out that I was in the vent from pumping station to vent and what I saw was vent hive location that had been turretted my the marines. The object I tried to parasite kill was a Resource Tower! - oh and this was after I worked out aliens had more than one attack
I remember going to bite a mrine and hearing a shriek and then exploding. WTH did he shoot me with I thought! I had accidently selected xenocide.
Having teams play while learning the map leads to very interesting games, now I know every map every shortcut. On Nancy with a Jp/hmg/welder I can leave base and take down all three hives by the vent system (done it before) it's not easy without strong comm support but when I started I didn't even see the vents were there!
