Router Problems

<insert snazzy description here>
This is my first post on here, so everyone be extra, extra nice to me .

Whenever I make a dedicated server on my grunty windows machine, it does a network game instead of an internet game. No way whatsoever of making an online game. I am using an ADSL Router (which is located in my spooky basement). Anyone have a solution?

demanding service doesn't mean we'll be nice to you anymore.

Anyway please be more specific in your problem so that one of the more technical members may attempt to assist you in your new server vendevore

Ok then. *Clears throat*: I live a comfortable life in NZ, and am 11 years old. I play NS about 2-3 times every day, and like the idea of hosting my own server. (speaking of hosting, my webpage host is angelfire.com). I am on the Ihug JetStart plan, with some sort of dynklink(i think thats how it's spelt) router in my basement. The router has several flashy lights on it, and the basement is scary at night. It has a roll up door (for access into the basement), and heaps (lots) of firewood is stored down there, some on the floor, some in neat piles. I myself did not place it there. My parents, however, did. I go to primary school, and have 1-3 friends. I have a complex WONID. If you require any more information, please reply to this. If this is what admins call rambling, then please ban me from these forums (My current IP address is 203.173.240.186, but never stays for that long, sometimes the router crashes, forcing me to painstaking pull a new, exciting, dynamic IP address from the pool of untaken IP addresses.). Thank you for taking the time to read.

Right now I am wondering if anyone will actually read this, and if they do, and they're an admin, will they ban me.

If you start a server behind a router and you browse for it on your LAN, you will always see it is a LAN server. Assuming you have forwarded the appropriate port (27015 by default) to your server machine, internet users will see it as an internet game and will be able to join. This happens because the half-life server browser assumes any machine that is on your network is a LAN server and therefore will not add it to your internet list. You join with your LAN IP and internet users join with your WAN IP.

So, short answer is that you do, in fact, have an internet server.

unless in server.cfg or listenserver.cfg you have sv_lan 1 instead of sv_lan 0. It depends on whether your starting a 'dedicated server' or a 'listen server' as to which file is used. You stated dedicated so that's server.cfg, you should see when the server starts it states that it is authenticating to WON.

So that's all easy, now this is the tricky part, your router will most likely change the port from the nice sensible 27015 to something wacky by the time the outside world sees your server and may even block peoples attempts to connect to it.

Go get the routers handbook - or download it from the apropriate website and set up a static port mapping from your server ip port 27015 to the outside world port 27015. If you need to set a protocol its UDP. This can be really easy or really hard and it's probably a good idea to let your parents know what your doing but learn how to do it first so they can see your not going to screw it up

Finally to double check go to serverspy and see if you can find your server by name.

Anyway, the wan ip thing didn't work, I tried my local wan ip and my, quote, remote, unquote, ip address and none worked. Right now I am confused, and am pondering if my server will actually ever reach the internet. For the moment, I shall show, quote, Mr. Good Advice Man's, unquote, (coz I couldn't remember his name, you see) advice to my dad, and see what he has to say. Thanks to everyone, of course with the exception of people who haven't replyed to my post .

Are you using windows or Linux to host the server?

I'm guessing Windows, and if so what version of windows? If you're using Windows XP, you may have to turn off the firewall that is built into it...

I'm using Windows XP with the firewall turned off. Here I have a picture of my dedicated server window, with JetStart connected to the internet and all ready to go. For the moment, I am heeding eaglec(i think)'s advice on the matter.

Idea number 2 - run the server and tell us what it's name is...
One of us will have a browse and let you know if we can get on.

if you are on a router you need to open your ports. Turn on ur DMZ and type in ur IP into the blank boxes. Hope you actually understand this, DMZ should be under security or options

I too have ADSL and i too cannot start dedicated server (althrough non dedic works), i think its because my ADSL uses NAT, is it possible?

When i type "status" in the ded serv window, it displays my Ip adress as 10.0.0.120:27015, but thats wrong, that is the IP of my non-existent LAN (ie. its the Ip between my Net card and my ADSL modem), as i said non dedic game works, but when i type "status" there it doesnt display my IP adress. It may be possible that dedic uses the wrong Ip somehow and tahts why nobody can join me? Is there any way to tell the dedic my real Ip?

Ok, I have another picture for everyone to admire. Several of my dad's friends have replyed to my pleas for help. My router has no DMZ (Dragon Mod Z?) thing, but I have found a 'virtual server' setting (that is what the picture is). So put on your thinking caps, get a cup of tea, flame Solemn (optional) , and think.

Damn Geocities, you have to put a space before the http thing in the address bar. Grr.
