And what resolution are you using and do you have 16-bit or 32-bit colors?
<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=19&t=31153' target='_blank'>Download this modelpack</a> and you will get a better fps. You can't join in servers that have model consistency on, but other servers does work great.
The way I have understanded that CPU usage, it is only for servers <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
- Download low-poly models
- Tweak your settings
- Tweak your hardware
or
- Buy new hardware
The three first ones are free, so I suggest you try them first <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
and right now my comp's at the shop waiting to be upgraded.
it had:
500mhz p2 celeron
256mb ram (thouhg i'm sure one of the modules was defective, i kept getting kernel_stack faults)
geforce 4 (mx440)
**** mobo made by msi
i run hl on 1024*768 (but my desktop on 1280*1024, hehe)
and 32bit colours
Well done !
Simple as that.

Maybe the problem isnt your computer but your connection . I got almost the same computer than you and NS runs quite fine. Look in the Tech support forums for some tutorials in tweaking the internet speed. I can make a big difference <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
My brother's 2.2ghz p4 machine can run NS in 1600x1200 on a geforce 4 mx 440, in 32bit, and get a constant 100fps. If you want to overclock your celeron 500, I had one with a generic heatsink and it hit 565mhz fine @ 75mhz fsb, if that helps you any.
Also, nab olly's the low-poly models, I couldn't notice a visual impact on most things, but it really takes a load off your cpu. I wish they were made official, since everyone loves high fps rates and you can't notice much of a quality loss, IMHO <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
But, on some server's (STD 2.0 Server <~Awesome Server) I can get 12-40 ping.
1.34GHZ Athlon XP+ 1500
512MB DDR RAM
GeForce4 MX460 64MB AGP 4x
Same here <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I can get 40ms ping on some german servers (they are close to me), what connection you have?
