Steam And Other Questions

With Steam 2.0 going public beta, it's getting ready to be officialy lanched. Will/should NS be part of Steam? I'd like it to be but hey, just MHO.

Next qestion, anyone know if HL2 will finally allow us to see the volumetric flamethrower make its debut? Does the new engine allow for the creation of it? (drool)

if the source engine doesnt support it then thats pretty silly.

This person was trying out Steam 2.0 and seeing if it was 56k friendly or not and so on, 1 no NS cannot be available on steam (dunno why, but can't), 2 Its very likely with the new HL2 thing such as flames will be easily done

but then again this is just my opinion/answer

yeah, I would be shocked if the source engine didn't support a volumetric flamethrower

AFAIK, Flay could do a volumetric flamethrower in HL now. It's just that the performance hit is unacceptable, coding one which wouldn't wreck performance is the hang up.

If NS ever went to HL2 then it would be the fact everone's minimum specs would be HL2 which would enable a flamethrower, not HL2 in itself. Although i'm sure it'd would be easier in HL2

It can't be available on Steam? Humm.. curious. I would have thought t could easily be available on Steam. maybe because it will probably cost $ to have in there.

Well, hopefully the HL2 engine will allow for a more efficient flamethrower that wont kill the CPU.

As a side question, has there been a survey to see what the comp. specs of the NS community are? It would be interesting to see what they are. After all, the average must be going up every year.

    [Venturing boldy into off-topic land]

IIRC, the dev team looked at the survey that valve did a while back to ascertain average spec.

i think steam only supports mods/games that are valve connected, such as CS, DoD and eventually HL2 when it comes out.

right now NS isnt directly supported by valve (ie. its not being made retail or valve isnt helping with huge amounts of work) so steam isnt going to do anything for NS.

also if NS ever went on HL2 im more then sure good ol' Flay will do anything he can to get that flamer up, even if it means taking the valve guys hostage and forcing them to do it themselves (...or not)

but wether NS does go on HL2 will be another story... we'll have to see how it plays on a low spec(ish) pc first probably

yes that does help actually if you go back in the NS.org news archives you can find that NS will be on Steam... never sure if they continued it though. NS on Steam will definetely get NS more noticed than it already is. OF course Source can do volumetric flamethrowers, it has fixed all those clipping issues in HL1 so if you shoot it into a vent it wont clip out of the vent into the void but make the flame even longer...

Best Flame Thrower I have ever seen is the one in RtCW
I hope they add something of that quality to the game!

Um, Desert Crisis has a damn good flamethrower if you haven't used it yet.

I recall seeing that on the news page. However I, as well, don't know if its still going to heppen. I have Steam right now and have yet to see it. But, they could be waiting till the 31st ...

I never truly understood what Steam was. Is it a bit like bittorrent for Valve software products?

It allows you to download updates quickly from different content servers. You basically subscribe to different mods/games and you can download updates straight from the master server. It also has a buddy list, anti-cheat and a messaging thing.
