Armory can be upgraded to become "Advance Armory" which can drop new weapons like HMG's and GL (Heavy Machine Gun's and Grenade Launcher).
To upgrade to Advance Armory just click on the armory and upgrade, as long as you have enough resourses it should upgrade.

Arms Lab upgrades the weapons levels and the armor levels of your marines.

Prototype Lab upgrades HA's (Heavy Armor) and/or JP's (Jet Pack's).

    Obseratory upgrades MT (Motion Tracking).

To upgrade these, you have to have the click on the right building and it will show you upgrades in your commander hud.

You can only spawn shotguns, welders and mines until you upgrade your armory. A welder is used to repair a players armor, can be used like a knife (its a very short ranged gun) and can e used to close/ open weld spots. A weld spot has a mark on it and may perform a function like opening or closing a vent or door. and making new areas accessible. Mines can be placed on walls and floors and explode when an enemy touches them. A fade or a gorge can shoot the mines to make them blow up, so if there are lots of fades, dont give people mines.

Read some of the commander guides.

I strongly suggest you play more marine first. Read the manual thoroughly, and read up on the Fronstiersman Strategy forum. But I really mean it about playing more marine first. Play under good commanders, watch what they do. Prior experience at other real time strategy games helps, but learning the nuances about good NS tactics you can only learn from playing NS.

Before you jump in the chair, be familiar with all the maps, know the tech tree, and have a basic understanding of common tactics. You can learn all this without playing as commander, and you'll be hurting your team to command without knowing this.

To be good, you need to be really good at RTS games (like starcraft, again)...so brush up on your reflex skills and know the maps like mad because you'll be moving all over just to heal/resupply guys and drop rts.

This can't be said enough... Know the Maps!
If your playing a map and a soldier says he needs health in Refinery, you need to know where that is. Play as a Marine alot first, see the lay of the level, know where pinch points are. A pinch point is an area, that is prone to attacks or ambushes and is isn't very safe due to multiple ways in. Know where the weld spots are, become a good marine before you try to be a good commander.
Start your own server, turn cheats on (in consol type "sv_cheats 1" without the quotes) join the rines and practise by your self, learn the tech tree and the best areas to place things. Then play a map where you can add some "Which Bots" and learn where they like to attack from.
The which bot is very smart and will take direct paths to get to you!
Practise alot on your own server. There arn't many people who can put up with a newbie commander for long when the Kharaa are kicking your teams ****.

    3. read the manual again
    4. read the guides in the frontiersmen and new player forum.

A good commander script helps too. But before you jump in the chair, know the map you're commanding, know the tech tree, know the hot spots, know what upgrades to get first, and when, the list goes on.
Like its been suggested, play the marine more before you jump in the chair. And when you do jump in the chair, most players will help you out.

Just one thing- DO NOT BUILD A TURRET FACTORY IN YOUR BASE WHEN THE GAME STARTS.
If you do that, the marines will most likely shun and eject you from the command chair.

If you don't though, most marines will be glad to help you out. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Not essential but valuable advice.....get a microphone.

Each marine/squad has induvidual needs. If you are typing you are wasting a lot of time. Also if there is something you want done fast you can put a little more emphasis by using the mic instead of using caps.

    Summary: Microphone.

if your team keeps saying "i need health at blah"
tell them to use voice commands or u wont supply them, once they use the voice command hit enter.
o, and take a look at the overview of the maps not in-game and decide where the best places to setup defence is.

By the way, if you're planning on using voicecom while playing as commander, if your voicecom key is one of your mouse buttons it will not work. Flay's done something to the mouse buttons, they are permenantly bound to commander-mode type stuff when you're commanding, so you'll need to bind another key to voicecom to use it while commanding.

There should be two or more threads that start off the same way and are relatively new... Lemme check.

Do this, every game you command, til you know what you are doing:

    - build: IP, armory, arms lab

    - upgrade: armor 1, weapons 1, weapons 2

    - give orders: tell your marines to attack the aliens hive and kill the gorge

    - build: closest res node to your main base

Do not give out medpacks or ammo packs no matter how much the team whines for them. Do not spend any res except for the above build order. After you've completed the above build order, do whatever you'd like. You can try to lock down the other 2 hives, you can give jetpacks and HMG's to your best marines, you can siege the hive they have, you can get more upgrades, etc.

Too many commanders neglect upgrades early game. Once the aliens get their upgrades, they have a field day with your marines. This build order will ensure that your troops are ready to deal with upgraded aliens.

The one principle to live by as commander is this: <b>attack</b>.

    The rest is peripheral.
