a way to group yer marines
with 2.0 coming, i know this is somewhat moot. but for those of you who have experienced the bizaare experience that is me comming, this is some clarity on it.

i group my marines according to funciton.

dagger=major strike group and RT building, and alien RT killing
(somewhat ramboish/CS players with a good squad leader to keep them together)

shield=defend base and any RTs near base (the good rines, those who follow orders and who are patient. when the chips are down, you NEED a shield group)

claw=black ops basically. sneak in and kill the gorgie, DCs etc. (the best shots, ppl who've memorized the map. ppl who dont' care about killing a skulk here and there, and are truly concerned about tactical targets (gorge, DCs etc), or distracting (shooting hive when a group is trying something VEWY devious!!!)

at least some funciton to the groups to keep in mind. now that we have the ever so bland, but HELPFUL, groups of 1, 2, 3, 4,5 .

btw, some mareins LOVE this, and it really helps the atmosphere and teamplay. uber rines will often scoff it, until we are winning with it.

tell which marines are in which group BY NAME, and with WP, if necessary.. you'll have to do this at LEAST 2 more times after initially grouping ppl up.

Grouping your soldiers has *always* been a good idea, and 2.0 is just going to make it easier.

In lots of games however, your defense and covert squads will be much smaller (usually 1, *maybe* 2 soldiers each).

I personally like to keep guy with shotgun/JP on patrol around the bases and RTs as a handyman. He can also serve as a forward scout if absolutely necessary.

Other than that, I change my squads depending on what's necessary - usually a main strike force, sometimes a decoy, maybe an additional scout.

When I command (which hasn't been 3 or 4 months since I gave up on 1.04, heh), I would assign squads ON MY WAY to the Comm Chair. Told my marines they wouldn't get any goodies if they weren't with the rest of the group. Worked very well.

Always been on my mind, never seen it happen =(. I've tried it few times when comming (not too often in the chair my self), but its hard in 1.0x without grouping. Hope this changes with 2.0 and we'll get much better squad action on pubs too.

That is my diagram of squad one "claw" getting the gorge. Hehe.
I always stay at base as a marine unless there is something going on just outside it, or i am following someone, expecially on the one with the command console up a ladder by glass. Teh sux0r for aliens..

There's an interesting side-effect of grouping marines together... You tend to group the same ones, since they're the best at task X, and they work well together. As a result, before long certain players on a server get REALLY good with each other, even without clan-type practice. They enter a room, and immediately turn to cover the entrances, each to their own, no discussion. That's what I love the most about grouping.
