    <a href='http://www.planethalflife.com/wss/' target='_blank'>Wolverine's Spray Site</a>, although no longer updated, is a great source of both custom sprays and tutorials on how to make them.

    Use <a href='http://download.com.com/3000-2121-10118877.html' target='_blank'>Half-Life TagConverter</a>
    It can't be any more simple. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I went into my half-life directory and noticed a directory called "logos"
    Looking in there showed me a whole bunch of .bmp files, and using MS PhotoEditor I was able to determine their size and that they were greyscale.

    So then I just found a picture I liked, converted it to greyscale, re-sized (64x64), and saved as a .bmp in that directory.
    Poof! Instant Tag that even lets you adjust the color like the standard ones that come with HL.

    If you wanna get fancy and do color though, well.. I guess that's where these other programs would come in handy.

    You cant do any color spraypaints in half-life though. Thats why it uses the greyscale....Half-Life converts it into a solid color in-game. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Technically, using that .bmp in the logo folder method, you can't do color.

    But when you select your logo and color in customize, halflife turns it into a texture called "logo" that's put into the texture set file called pldecal.wad
    If you read anything from original half-life documentation, this is how they told you the "proper" way to make your own spray.

    But, for the best custom sprays, your texture editor simply bypassese the 64x64 pixel requirement for original logos and allows you to do non-grayscale, ultimately editing the pldecal.wad file. Your max pixel size is no loner 64x64, but a slightly larger limit that Wally will tell you about.

    Other than that, there are many texture editors for making your own spray/logos. Just google for "half-life spray" if you don't like the links already provided.

    To clarify: h20's post was the original way of doing sprays, but the one that everyone uses now is sorta a "hack" of sorts for allowing color and larger sizes.

    For simple custom sprays, all you need is a greyscale 64x64 image in the same directory as the default ones. For a colour spray, you need to actually make the pldecal.wad yourself using the aforementioned tools.

    Interestingly enough, <a href='http://www2.bwgame.com/' target='_blank'>Black & White</a>'s creature tattoos are also 64x64 greyscale bitmaps, so you can, say have a Half-Life lambda symbol on the side of your cow's backside, if you so desire.

    Creating a pldecal.wad and puting it in the proper directory is more or less a hack around what was intended. It was not intended for there to be color sprays, and HL can convert the .bmp's in the logo folder to a pldecal.wad file which is used to spray images in game, but only monocolored grayscale kind of stuff, which can be given any other color scale in the customize menu.

    You can however replace the pldecal.wad with your own .wad containing one image(I think it's called {logo to allow for it to be seen through wherever the color is 255 blue(think blue screen in movie making here)). The images that are used for making textures are 8-bit indexed bmp files with all dimensions divisible by 16. Index 255 must be pure blue if you intend to make a partially invisible spray(r,g,b=0,0,255). I think the max size was 10752 pixels(you could messure the max size in bytes too if you wish since each pixel=1 B in 8-bit indexed bmp's but then you would have to add the parts of the file which are 'color index data', thats just more messy).

    Wally is probably the smoothest way to make your own hldecal, and it does make sure index 255 is pure blue if you have one pure blue index, you won't have to worry which index number is the pure blue one. It will tell you if you are exceding the max size or if the image is not one that has dimensions divisible by 16.

    If you go into the customize menu in HL you will destroy your beautiful decal so don't, this is a hack around not something which was officially intended but it's fun all the same...

    edit: oops I spelled beautiful as butiful <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->
