Why would they be spectators? Why not they join humans/that other race? That would make since. And this thing needs a new species of aliens. I wonder where all that old alien concept art went, that was the sweetest. There was like this once huge alien tenticle monster, that was so cool, like the hight of ten TSA marines, that ...I needa see it again dude. I wanna be one I wanna be one!!

No. I've talked to some Valve guys like this, and you can basically just open a HL1 map in the new Hammer, change the entities, retexture, and you're done with the map end of things. Doing this with old HL1 maps was one of the first things they tried as a proof of concept.
The real problem is whether or not the code would have to be redone. Most of the game logic code probably not, but all the minor issues like spacing, size, etc. would likely all have to be reworked and retested with the new physics model and animation model and so on. This would likely not be trivial, though I wouldn't expect it would be that much harder than making a 2.0 I really don't think all that work would be worth it unless they totally rethought the game in light of the capabilities of the new engine.
My basic preference for seeing where NS goes is that a few more months are spent balancing out 2.0 to make sure that it's the absolute best it can be. Then, the first beta for NS2 appears sometime mid/late next year. But of course, I'm nobody. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Considering how hard it is to make sure just two races are balanced against each other, can you imagine how hard it would be to balance all three 1 v 1 combinations at once? At least in 2.0, they could rest assured that balancing out vanilla marines vs. vanilla skulks wouldn't break two other combinations (v skulks v 3rd race tech one, and same for marines)

I don't see why NS would not be eventually ported to HL2. Obviously the makers of NS are dedicated the game, so why not make the next logical step in its' evoultion?
AS for the future of NS, the most drastic gameplay changes I expect would be a few new rine weapons and a 6th Kharaa species. I don't know if it would be possible for a 3rd race to be incorporated into in NS as it is. Remember, however, NS is breaking new ground. Think about what people must have said when Warcraft: Orcs and Humans was the latest thing. "How could they ever have a game with THREE races? It'll never be balanced!" was probaly said a few times. There has to be a way to make a RTS FPS game with 3+ races. Maybe not NS, but in another game.
as far as the future of NS i trust whatever will happen
if Flayra does go to HL2 engine... i hope he creates a new Theme allowing him the flexibility of using Vehicles and large spaces.
most of all i wish Flayra and Company good luck they make really nice stuff. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I don't know about anything of a sort of 6th race, as it seems much like overkill. Each of the already 5 species already have a role of their own, and whichever one you are, you have the poteniel of doing best. Skulks are quick and not much wasted when one dies, gorges are the builders, lerks can offence and defence in large radiouses, etc.
If a 6th race were put into play, I would say it would go before the 5th race, making the Onos 6th.
Things to NOT expect anytime soon * Marine vs Marine -- The game isn't remotely balanced for this. Too many things will have to be altered for it to be a small project. Quite frankly, I don't care if I ever see it. I don't see how marine vs marine NS can ever be as good as what we have now. The human vs human FPS idea is heavily done already, and Flay'd have a hard time making it competitive for people's gaming time with the games that specialized.
Things to NOT expect EVER
* A third faction -- not only would the game be virtually impossible to balance, you'd have special FPS issues as well. You can't have all 3 sides play at once with any semblance of NS gameplay, and you'd just have the 2 coolest factions as the only ones anyone ever plays. So, even with 3 options, you still have 2 factions.
REASONABLE things to expect in a reasonable timeframe:
* New weapons/aliens -- as to those who complain of not having enough weapon slots, I imagine Valve would work with flay on this one. Heck, they released HL patches specifically so CS could do stuff, why not the same with NS? Otherwise, this is by far the simplest kind of addition for a game. Look how successful Blizzard games' expansion packs have been!
* Some form of recoil -- Flay has already said he wanted to experiment with this, so look forward to it. I'm pretty sure he also said that there would still be similar firing cones, but the width of the cone is dependant on the movement state of the player.
EDIT: I forgot to include the obvious -- HL2. I imagine flay will experiment with it, but the end result will depend entirely on the success and mod-ability of HL2. No petition or whatever will make much of a difference.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->InGaming : There have been quite a number of small things such as the LMG having a scope but not being able to use it. It's funny how the simplest of things can grow into something rather big and unpleasant. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I'm not sure if that will make it in 1.1 though, I'm guessing that will be the next release after it. I don't have plans at this time to add more weapons, but I'm sure we'll see some new ones at some point in the future.
InGaming : With the imminent release of Half Life 2 [and all the anticipation for its release], will Natural Selection be getting a port to Half Life 2 in the future? Will that allow you to add the extra features into NS that was being held back by the Half Life engine?
Flayra : I'm dying to experiment with that engine. The problem is, it's not a simple "port". To really take advantage of it, the game would have to be completely redone. The artwork and levels would have to be thrown out and started over. The game itself would want to take advantage of all these new features, so just moving the core gameplay over to something prettier wouldn't be worth the effort either. Considerable effort would be needed to get NS running on HL2. That said, the team is anxiously hoping to work with it, when it's available. We aren't announcing what we're doing with the engine at this time.
InGaming : It has been talked about before, but time has passed since you were last asked this, but has the NS Team got plans to have further involvement with Valve in the distribution of this game? And following on from that, how much support and help do you receive from Valve with regards to the development of Natural Selection?
Flayra : We have no plans to work with VALVe on distribution. If they're interested, we're interested, but VALVe is so busy with their own franchises that I'm sure they don't have time for it. I am hoping to pursue plans for a retail version of NS though, and of course we need to license the HL engine to do that. Eric Smith from VALVe has been helping us out with Anti-Cheat support, which has been quite helpful.
InGaming : There are quite a number of open source or games having their sources publically released (such as Quake 2). This has made game development for smaller developers easier. Was there ever any intentions to make Natural Selection into a stand alone game that also has a single player option? Do you think that a single player mission set for Natural Selection is on the drawing board or will be in the future?
Flayra : An extensive single-player campaign could be a ton of fun, but it's so much work to do well that it's not something to undertake lightly. NS has always been designed for multiplayer, and multiplayer is what really excites me, so I don't see us doing a single-player campaign any time too soon. Even if we had funding to do a full sequel, I think I'd rather spend the time innovating in multiplayer then single player, but that's just my preference. The multiplayer side could be taken so much further that I don't think people would need or even want single-player.
The attention we've gotten from NS has opened up some new options for us though, so expect some exciting announcements in the future. I think the next build will include something to replace pheromones. And that thing, you know the one, it doesn't flap...
And the marines will get vehicles. The best will be the HOVARcraft.
Seriously, what would make a good sensory upgrade? We've got stealth. We've got better hive sight... maybe seeing thru walls, or structures "sight" marines for you to add to hive sight, or perhaps night-vision for those dark corridors. Or perhaps a "blur" effect that would mess up your outline and make you harder to target or extra images that dance around each other. That would really help defend against things like pistol snipers. Or someone made the suggestion that sensory could give you "conc" effects on your attacks that would mess up the marines' aim for a second or three. There's lots of options, it seems. They just need to be creative.

Well, you don't HAVE to take advantage of the more detail: the point is that if you don't, why do the conversion at all? However, if the conversion is easy enough, it wouldn't be a bad thing to do a quick port just for testing purposes, though I doubt we normal people would ever get to see it.
I don't see why marine v marine wouldn't work as long as the maps we reworked. Obviously, the aline v marine maps are not at all suited to it. Why remove it? Simply don't use it if there's no point, just like there's no point in using mines after the aliens hit a 2nd hive.
The point is: would the game be balanced? On a map with a basically equal distribution of resources between the two teams, yeah, it probably would be. Sure some elements wouldn't be as effective against other marines, but the other team has the same problem. And the Elec tfs are the only ones I can really think of anyway. The main problem is just balancing the maps: the balance issues would be minimal after that.
It WOULDN'T be like the other human v human games because of the much more complex RTS elements.
The biggest problem I can think of is that the game would be about pure res lockdown and taking out the enemy base. No one worries about new hives going up, just who controls the most resources while still defending their base.
<!--QuoteBegin--Forlorn+Jul 23 2003, 03:10 PM--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Forlorn @ Jul 23 2003, 03:10 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> A 3rd race, perhaps? 5 aliens X 4 abilities = 20 weapons
Knife + LMG + HMG + Welder + Mines + Shotgun + Grenade Launcher + Pistol = 8
Reserving 1 slot for flamethrower when it goes in = 1
20 + 8 + 1 = 29 weapons in use by NS
