Gamecube Games

help me out.
Hi, My Name is Spacemonkey, and yesterday I bought a Gamecube.

Its the first time that I have ever owned a console system, and its actually quite weird learning to use a gamepad. Yes I know I had a deprived childhood, blah blah blah, but my parents refused to buy me a console cause, "it serves no purpose but to dull your mind".

Now I am older and duller (gg internet/pc), and can afford to buy my own system. I am not that interested in graphics, especially from a console which almost by definition if going to look uglier than my uber pc. In fact, its the persuisivness of my pc gaming that made my buy the gamecube. The gamecube seems to be the console most removed from a pc. Never liked the playstations anyway, and xbox seems a clunky pc which I cant tinker with.

So I have gone from a person who has maybe played a console 10 times in his life to one who own a console. Its been grand. Learning to use a gamepad, finding that there is a big slab of people passionate about this stuff. I mean who has ever ventured into the Console Sectionof gamespy? Its also nice to have something just work. No patches. No settings, No nothing.

END BACKSTORY.

What I need from you guys most importantly is:

What games *MUST* i own for my beloved gamecube? At the moment I only own one, Zelda, which I might add is fantastic. The graphics are beautiful, cutting edge in terms of artistry. However I dont want my experience tainted by lesser quality. After all the main reason I have a gamecube is cause of the quality of gameplay in nintendo games. So if you guys could give me your top ten must own games for the gamecube that would fantastic. Also I live alone, so single player games will probably be my main focus. However my girlfriend secretly loves my gamecube and wants to play with me as long as I dont tell anyone (she thinks gaming is geeky, she owns a mac ). So I am buying her a controller today. I also often have friends round. Multiplayer game suggestions would be most useful if they are the throw away fun kind fun and cute . I dont need a hardcore fps for my gamecube. After all I have a pc and the internet. Something you can play with girls and drunk with friends. ta.

Secondly (and lastly). Where do I go on this wide world of the net for gamecube news, reviews, cheats (not the evil online multiplayer kind), forums, etc. What is the bluesnews of the console world? Whats the penny-arcade of the gamecube world? Whats nintendos gamespy equivalent?

Cheers,

Spacemonkey

Ikaruga - best and most fun test of your skills ever!
Animal Crossing - perhaps this game will convert your parents into changing their minds!?!?
    Pikmin
    Resident Evil
    Metroid Prime
The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Super Monkey Ball 2 - pure addiction...
    Star Wars: Rogue Leader

And you can't forget all the Mario games. Just kidding. I'd recommend you get the Metal Gear Solid remake, when it's done. I forgot when, but it's going to look neat.

    Animal Crossing-Addictive to No end.
    Pikmin-For you Comming Skills here.
    Super Monkey Ball Series-Just cause.
    -Resident Evil

And I'm sorry to say, but in my opinion those are the only decent/good games. AC-Good. Pikmin-Decent. Super Monkey Ball-Good. Resident Evil-Decent.

But if you don't wanna hear my harsh honesty, don't read the rest of the post.

Despite the downright AMAZING graphics of Metroid Prime, and the GREAT story of Zelda-The Winwaker, both are quite...lacking. Metroid Prime requires no skill, and I only felt true fear and excitement of dying only at 1 point in the game. Not to mention, the save software for it is INCREDIBLY corrupted, and the game has been known to not recognise your save files for some odd reason, even when the gamecube says their still there.

Windwaker is a OK game, it just has too many flaws to count. Like first off-the story is great and all, but you can't take ANYTHING seriously. I almost got into it, but that was right before I beat it. And thats another thing-despite me beating it in 3 weeks(fast for a zelda game) I also had to use a strategy guide for the whole thing. They RARELY let you know what to do next, they don't have adequate tutorials on your tools/weapons(I didn't find out you could turn with the hook until I looked in a strategy guide!!!). not to mention that with all the cartoony antics and graphics, it makes it hard to really wanna fight for the world.

And just cause it needs to be said- Star Wars Rogue Squadron is IMPOSSIBLY FREAKING HARD. DO NOT GET THIS IF YOU THINK YOU'LL BE ABLE TO BEAT THE 1st LEVEL IN THE SAME WEEK.

I'm sorry to say, I wasted my money when I bought this. The gamecube is terrible worthless in basically every way. I'm gonna be selling mine this week, cause its taking dust.

Hope you return it, seriously. Best console really is Xbox, despite what everyone says. It really is an amazing console. Made me give up my PC for a few months.

    metroid prime

super smash brothers melee (one of the best multiplayer games for any system, ever)

    zelda is also pretty good

thats about it. IMO Nintendo is losing ground and having to wait 6 months between buying worthwhile gamecube games is proof.

edit: WTH? i beat rogue squadron in 2 days, just like i did the n64 version. its a very pretty game and fun but too short-lived for me to recommend it.

ahhh! you cheated on wind waker! and you call yourself a gamer !!!!111

    yeah so.
super smash bros melee is the bestest game ever. if you have even a vastly uneducated knowledge of nintedo youll find things in here to make you go all misty eyed and nostalgic. course you really need 4 players to make the most of it.
wind waker is good, purty cul0rz.
all the other games i own are pretty average

Each to his own dude. Your hard and my hard will differ slightly. First time gamepad user ahoy. I am a complete noob, zelda is fundamentaly different to every game i have ever played. Ohh and yes they tell you that you can turn with the rope, the little guy on the ship tell you before you get you pouch to hold stuff. I know cause i am just alittle bit beyond that. And I love the graphics, and didnt even know i was fighting for the world, i thought i was saving my sister.

But since we did the whole console wars thing. I didnt buy an xbox cause I havent seen a title on the xbox i want to play that i cant on pc. Plus i have a top of the range pc, and a top of the range DVD player. Plus this isnt my main sort of gaming goodness, its my light gaming, my break from gaming, something to muck around with before bed. Gamecube fit my needs. If you needs are different then Gamecube may not be for you.

Plus Zelda + Gamecube + memory for <$200 aus. Thats pretty worthwhile. Its nearing the end of this console generation so i shall be able to pick up games that are fun to play for gameplay cheaply.

I am the foremost expert in Gamecubeology (of all the people who don't own one, at least), since I'm right next to Nintendo hours a day. You need:

    Metroid Prime

    Animal Crossing

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3 (comin' out soon, it's going to be the BEST!)

    Ikaruga

    Super Smash Brothers Melee

    Super Monkey Ball 2

Resident Evil: Something Something (they're all kind of interchangeable from my point of view)

-edit- And guys, I love nintendo. I was just disapointed in the companies that decided to make stuff for it. I'll support Nintendo till the day I die- I learned how to game with them. I won't give them up.

i didn't like metroid prime that much, TBH. If it were on PC i think it would have been much more enjoyable, but the sheer amount of time walking around the world is boggling, only matched in my mind by Zelda64.

    I would say you NEED:

    Pikmin
    Smash Bros. Melee
    Zelda The Wind Waker
    Metroid Prime
    Resident Evil

The rest of these are really good:

    SSX Tricy
    Mario Sunshine
Luigi's Mansion (shut up - I LIKED IT)
    Animal Crossing

    my favorites are:

    1. Zelda: Master Quest (buy it off of some one if you can)

    2. Metroid Prime

    3. Zelda: Wind Waker

    4. Time Splitters 2

    5. Super Smash Bros Melee

6 Soul Calibur 2 (when it's out next month)

    7 Extreme G 3 (it's just awesome breaking the sound barrier )

    8. Mario Sunshine

    9. Resident Evil

    10. Phantasy Star Online (never played it online, but it kept me entertained for a good four weeks)

and game that i hate the most and you should never ever get even if your life depended on it and you were going to be eaton by hoards of works that slowly digest you while they crawl all over your naked body in a pit full of red ants:

    1. Enter the Matrix

I wouldn't go to that extreme but I will say that the gamecube controller doesn't suit that game very well. There are also a whole lot more games that are much better (see his list above) than it as well. Really, if you are an utter fan of the matrix you should at least check it out to see the extra FMV cutscenes.

    PHANTASY STAR ONLINE

This game is so sweet, I had stopped playing console games but now I got this and have been playing it more than NS!

You can have 4 players simotaniously!!! Something many games lack these days! The multiplayer for that is great split screen! Single player is great, haven't tried online yet, but that has gotta be even better.

200 is the max level! Customize your character to make him/her look like almost anything!

    You can be:

Hunters: Sword users, can use magic, or if androids, traps
    Rangers: Gun users (unlimited ammo!)
Force: Magic users, can use spells earlier, more often, and more powerful than hunters or rangers.

This game is the best... after NS.

3.super mario 128 ( if you got a gamecube, you gotta have a mario game, no doubt about it)
    4.turok evolution
    5.harvest moon: A wonderful life
6.f-zero g-x (coming soon but it should be good)

I was born on the big N, raised on the big N and I will die with my big N.

Smoke's Top Ten Preferred Game Cube Games:

    1. Metroid Prime - This is not an FPS, this is an FPA (First Person Adventure). The graphics are gorgeous, Retro did a perfect job converting Samus Aran into 3d. Plus a good story and while the combat might seem a little weak, it was not designed to be a Quake/Doom knock-off

    2. Eternal Darkness - This game is like Resident Evil, but much less...scary. Creepy, however, it is. Your sanity meter will lessen and you will see strange things happen. I once cast a healing spell only to blow into pieces, then it turned out to be a "Sanity Effect". Great fun.

    3. Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker - It's the Zelda series. To not like it is like saying "I am an idiot, shoot me and be done with it!"

    4. Super Smash Bros. Melee - It's a great multi-player game. You can fool around with it for hours just getting the hidden characters.

    5. Splinter Cell - Yes, I know they have it for PC, but I'm a console man right now. Games like this are meant to be played on console, it's so much more...smooth.

    6. Phantasy Star Online Ver 1&2 - Looks great, good luck finding network adapter though.

    7. Ikaruga - Haven't played it, heard great things, saw great reviews, I want to own it. Too bad my job doesn't need me.

    8. Animal Crossing - Again, same thing as above, plus it's non-violent.

    9. GameBoy Advance Player - Guess what? The GC has a thing that plugs in and lets you play gameboy Advance games on your GC/TV. Very nice.

    10. Resident Evil - Not my cup of tea. Too scary for me.

[edit]And my favorite console gaming website, despite their ads, is Game Revolution Main Page[/edit]

Timesplitters 2: You will never find a FPS quite as good as this one. (Yes it beats the pants off a load of PC FPS's as well) If you liked Goldeneye you will LOVE this!

Rogue Leader: it may be hard but DAMN it looks good!

Super Smash Brothers Melee: Enough has been said about it.

Metroid Prime: Many won't like the play style of it and I can understand why but it has to be one of the most compelling adventures ever made (And it has Rag-Doll physics!)

Eternal Darkness: Whoa, just Whoa. Perfect voice acting, authentic time zones and then theres the "Bathtub scene"

There would be more but my brain is sucking!

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem - Single greatest single player storyline I have ever seen in any game for any platform. Incredibly highly recommended.

Metroid Prime - One of the most beautiful GC games out, and also my personal favorite of the ones I've played.

Zelda: Wind Waker - Personally, this game angered me. 10 minute travel times between the islands I needed to get to, often with nothing in the way to peak my interest was just too much. I think I got about halfway with this game, and still haven't gone back. When you were actually fighting on an island or in a dungeon, though, the game was a lot of fun.

Super Smash Brothers Melee - If you've got a group of 4 over, this is one of the two best games available for all of you to have a load of fun.

Mario Party 4 - The other great 4 player party game, Mario Party just plain rocks.

Animal Crossing - This game took a good 2 months of my life away. I'm afraid to start playing it again, because it'll probably take another 2 months.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - I like Star Wars games, and I liked the first Rogue Squadron. This game was a lot of fun.

Ikaruga - If you like the old school style Galaga type games, you'll love this one.

Naruto - This is a Japanese import, so it might be a little bit more difficult to find, and also more expensive, but if you like fighting games at all, I highly reccomend this. It is easily the greatest fighting game I've ever played. And the game makes a lot more sense if you've seen the show (also Japanese, and not readily available for American consumption).

    Not yet released games:

Viewtiful Joe - I played this on the GC demo disk, and this game is really awesome. But it's coming out in October, I think. I'm considering pressuring my friend to get the Japanese import though, and he's likely to do it, too, since it's already out in Japan.

F-Zero GX - I've liked every F-Zero game I've ever played, and this one will be no different. It looks absolutely stunning. This is one of only two racing series I've ever been into.

Super Mario Kart: Double Dash - Hopefully this turns out well. It's the other racing series I'm a fan of, and I've like all the Mario Kart games I've played, so I've got my fingers crossed.

Soul Caliber 2 - Yes, it's coming out on other gaming platforms. But those platforms won't have Link. So nyah.

Umm... I guess that's a bout it for now.
