Team Size, Servers And Maps

how many is too much?
Server size has up until now been pretty dependant on two factors, the slanted resource model and server performance. Since 2.0 seems to have adressed both these issues, making the resource model balanced for anything but extremely small games, and the drain on servers CPU has been reduced drastically, there's really only one limitation. Maps.

For example, a small map such as Eclipse will probably tend to get very crowded with teams bigger then 8 while a larger map, such as Nothing can handle much bigger teams. The only problem right now is teh fact that there aren't that many good (read: official) maps out there.

Now, does it seem probable that in the future, servers will be divided into different sizes depending on map rotation, or the other way around of course. I know I'd like to play with 12 or 15 players a side, but I doubt many maps could have that many without being congested.

However, my experience with bigger teams is limited. I practically exclusively play on a 18 player server, so I'd really like some feedback on how many players would be considered "max" on specific maps. So... what do you think? The vets of course can also comment on the new maps that will be introduced in 2.0.

I played in a 12v12 tanith game once and that hardly seemed congested to me. In fact, its still one of my favorite games I've played. I think that map is large enough to handle at least that size. And personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more than 8v8 on eclipse as that would turn that into a huge slugfest which I think could be incredible.

The biggest game I have been in was on Hera and the teams were 14 v 14 it wasn't bad at all, if anything it was better, HUGE BATTLES 10 v 8 kinda things, when it came to taking a hive a 12 v 14 battle was INSANE! Most of the wall behind the hive was BLACK, due to bullet holes, and the Kharaa Blood was everywhere. It was one of the best games I have ever been in!

Well alright, but more specifically, what would you say was the max number of people on every given map before it becomes congested? Is it possible that a majority could agree on this number os that maps would in the future be known as 8vs8 or 12vs12 maybe...

Back when there was 1 32 man server...

I played a game of nothing. My god, top 3 on my fav games of all time.

Lets just say, that with 2.0 squads, its gonna be a lot better, definately.

And just to let you know...I was aliens. We BARELY made it. It actually came down to the line.

They got our hive, its pinging, their IPs are gone, and there were 3 of us aliens left, 5 marines.

I was lerk...chomped 3 of them(on accident actually) then one of the last 2 marines(he was JP) got killed by a falling skulk, who died before he hit the ground.

Last guy got parasited...he fought hard.

Best. Game. Ever. Cept that one...but thats for another thread.

Ok, I have to admit I was expecting responses along the lines of:

    Eclipse: 9vs9
    Caged: 6vs6
    Tanith: 14vs14

Or simmilar (no, those do not represent my opinions, I have none!)

would say 8v8 is my favorite mode of players... not just for NS but for all mods, that way you dont get to many players, and there are enough for a good game.

Considering all the changes to the maps, wouldn't it be prudent to wait until 2.0 is released before deciding on team sizes for each map?

I'd have to agree with the larger game idea... Everytime there's 20 or so people in a game and you have atleast 10 on 10, the games are always more exciting. Think the largest I've ever played is 24 people... i can't wait for 2.0 when you can have more people with less lag.

    Very good point.

I'm sure there are no other speculations that will be rendered useless at the coming of 2.0

I think things get too impersonal in bigger games. My favorite game sizes in all HL mods, NS included, are about 10-16 players.

All the maps have been tweaked. Even the old officials, so lets wait for NS 2.0. And I think Eclipse is a big map.
