Bones Issue For Weapon Models In Max

<div class="IPBDescription">BIG image, but just 65k</div> OK, so I decided to get off my backside and learn to animate weapons in max, and pretty quickly ran into this problem.

As you can se from the picture (hopefully) I have a nice bone setup when I have the smd open in Milkshape, but when I import it into max things don't work the same way - the bones don't seem to link or even point in the correct direction. Now, someone assured me this is how things are meant to be, and then mumbled something about IK that I didn't follow at all, but my basic problem (for now) is this:

See that there bone with the big cyan arrows pointing to it? When I grab the hand's parent bone in max and try to move it (to, say, the grip position...) all that happens is it rotates around that highlighted bone in max's z-axis. Despite much hair-pulling and shouting at the computer, I can find no way to even get the basic pose right, let alone start animating. What am I doing wrong here? Do I need to modify the imported bone structure into something that will work better?

(edit: basically what I'm saying is I can't move anything - only rotate.)

I don't QUITE remember, but look for something that says "don't effect children" or something in your animation options, this will make it so that if you move a set of bones, the child bones won't move as well (for example let's say simply that your "hand" is the parent, and the "gun" is the child... if you move the hand the gun will move, but if you move the gun the hand won't move if you have parents effecting children... but remember that this IS a useful option to have on, since in a lot of models (such as player models) when you rotate something you want its children to rotate with it (like an arm moving, and taking the fingers with it)
