I currently got power strip to help me fix the dark issue in natural-selection, however it seems my HUD is black, I can bearly tell the blue and yellow resource bars on alien apart. The game is bright but the hud is practicly **** black. If you have a solution please tell me. Thank you in advance.

Great... I missed spelled Black on topic name... oh well :X

using a program to artificially increase your gamma so that you can see in the darkest of corners is considered an exploit, only use it if for some strange reason you can see anything in most places, first try settings gamma 3 in the console, and then try putting the brightness all the way up on your monitor.

The fact that my monitor is broken and I wouldnt be able to see in light where its pure bright areas makes me use it. I don't make it that bright either, to see in those dark areas. I still have to often use my flashlight. I try to place it where I can see things as if I was really there.

Seeing normal on my monitor makes it seem extremely bright because I use to have to play with it extremely dark. Where I had to have my flashlight out all the time and only see the flashlight radius.

I also don't consider powerstrip an exploit. I know that many people dont have rules against it and some people have even encouraged it.

Dont mean to come off mad or anything just trying to explain my problem. I fixed my darkness so its normal, I think, but want to fix hud <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

P.S. If this doesn't make sense try to work with it. I been up for a long time and I am very sleepy <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

an exploit!!?? what? so who decides what the "correct" gamma is? Why cant i change it and keep it that way?

exploit thats bull, whoever made that up...geez...

P.S. Most modern video drivers INCLUDE editing tools to tweak brightness, gamma, and contrast...So the colors can be shown Correctly.

don't ever bump posts mate, its just anoying. If we let the topic die it meens we have no answer, or we havn't gotten to it yet (I for one was away for a few days and thus had not seeen this, tough I would have after a time)

    now, your problem:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> The fact that my monitor is broken <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

there is PROBABLY your problem. Solution : Go buy a new moniter.

If you don't wana jsut drop the $$ off the bat here are 2 possible tests:

    1) tote another moniter (nother one in house or a friends) and hook up your comp
    2) tote the comp to the other moniter

now, to comment on Powerstrip and gamma related issues:

nvrmind, the mods (mainly MonsE) have been ticked off at flame/debates going on in here, this is simply not the right place for it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

so pls, don't get on others cases, just be civil and polight. This is also NOT the rightr place to be posting this

Ok I realise a few people have had a problem with me thinking that eXiSt is trying to exploit, I apologise for the snap judgement, I could make some lame excuse that I was tired, but I won't, I was wrong, and I'm sorry.

I was having this problem running a Geforce MX440 with two monitors. I also noticed that the text for the aliens showed up green. When I disabled the second monitor before playing everything seemed to work. I also reinstalled the last HL update, but I think the real problem was the second monitor.

I just want to say, compared to the screenshots I've seen of the game my brightness isnt as bright as the ones the creator had. I am 17 with no job and no source of income so getting a new monitor is out of the question. Now this isnt based on ingame because my brightness is still darker then I see on screenshots of ingame on the site. That isnt the point, I am talking about my HUD, you know Heads Up Display... Thats what is different, it seems pitch black and I can't see colors on it. The game itself is fine with its brightness but the HUD is way to dark, all I see is black. I can't tell when a hive is up because the 3 hives in the hud are black. Now will someone please try to help me?

@pepsiboy Dual moniters make Baby Flay Cry (ok, bad joke but I am tired. For some reason NS breaks on Dual moniters, the workaround seems to be to unplug one moniter before booting up)

    @eXiSt

Ok, this is a problem I have seen before (I have seen scrn shots)

my sugestion is to do a search (try dark or black hud) in this forum

I am to lazy and to tired to do the work for you <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> (if it was solved it s here, if not, sry)

exist isn't the only one with this probelm. I've had this same problem in both marine commander mode and regular alien mode; I've had it in 1.04, 2.0 betas, and 2.0. I'm about to go into NS right now to take a screenshot showing how much it hinders gameplay; I'll edit this post in a few minutes and add it in.

I also have a dual-monitor setup, so after posting the screenshot I'll try disabling one as suggested to see if it helps.

Alright, editing my previous post wouldn't let me add in the file of the screenshot, so here goes. Time to see if exist is having the same problem as me or a different one. Here's Alien HUD screenshot, resolution dropped to 640x480 for uploading purposes.

You'll notice a thin line on the resource meter -- that's what most people would see as being at the top of the colored-in part. A similar thin line would normally be on the adrenaline side, but I haven't used any adrenaline in this screenie, so it's at the "top" right now.

Here's the worst part. You'll note the hive icons are dark. (Upgrade icons would be as well, but at least I've learned to distinguish by silhouettes.) With icons that dark it becomes rather impossible to tell if a hive is completed, under construction, or completely inactive. When a hive is under attack I can't tell which one with the icon, I have to use hive sight and look for red circles.

...and the marine commandermode hud. At least there's no disadvantages here like there are in the alien hud. But it does make it a bit less impressive when I try to show off the game to all my Warcraft 3-loving friends.

After uploading this I'll see if disabling the 2nd monitor helps.

[edit]woah. Just....woah. I disabled the 2nd monitor and loaded up the game, and when I got in I noticed I didn't get my usual error of "display doesn't support downloadable gamma" or something like that.
Dude, this game's got <i>color!</i> Mineshaft is like an entirely different map. Veil is like an entirely different map. Bast and Hera are like entirely different maps. And commandermode, ooohhhhohoho commandermode....why didn't someone tell me about this earlier?
Exist, gamma-fixing drivers and programs won't help you. Check if your videocard is the kind that supports different monitor outputs (like a computer monitor or a TV) and do whatever you can in the Display properties to shut it off. If it works, you'll be happy. Incredibly happy.

That's exactly how mine is. My game isnt as bright but the hud is just as bad. I'll try disableing and tell you how it came out.

Err how do I disable it? :X

How to disable second monitor? Just try disconnecting it from the video card video-out port.
