Is It Bad To Learn By Death?

I'm wondering, is it ineffective to just log onto a mid level high level server when you're a newbie, then get destroyed for a while... as opposed to just joining a newbie server....

    Well... I suggest you play with people at approximately your own skill level. There's no point in playing on a pro server if you're a newbie. Not in terms of how much you'll learn, but by the fact that nobody likes losing repeatedly with no chance of victory. You'll also annoy the expert players, who would rather play a high-level game of NS than answer newbie questions or have to rely on unskilled teammates.

    There's nothing wrong with being new, but avoid pro servers. It's easier for everyone involved.

    mmm, should i start with kharaa or marines...

    The general advice is to go marine first, as they're obviously gonna be more intuitive to use as most FPSs are a guy-with-a-gun type.

    If you've played AVP1/2 or any other melee dominant games you'll probably do OK as Kharaa.

    Try both, it can't do any harm and if your finding one difficult avoid it for the moment until you can get used to NS in general and then re-visit when your more comfortable.

    If you do try Kharaa however it's essential you know how to evolve to higher lifeforms and get evolutions.

    Good luck, and welcome to NS <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    If you are trying to learn as quickly as possible, I would say to focus as much effort as tolerable into being familiar on an introductary basis with every major location and relevent choke points and vents on every map. Once you have this down, you are ready to learn by following or observing the best players you can find.

    It doesn't really matter. Pick random team <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->.

    I suggest you do not go commander, though, until you get a feel for the game. It doesn't really matter what you evolve to as aliens, though. Follow the lead of more experienced players as kharaa, and follow your commander's instructions as marine. And please don't bother the commander for anything other than medpacks, he has a <i>lot</i> to concentrate on <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    imo, You should always play with people just a bit above your skill level, and you'll rise to them sooner it seems. ie: I started playing cs and I played in a pub server that had a LOT of cal-i players, and I learned very fast, May be just me though <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    R@MBO you have the right of it. If you play continually at your own level, and everyone else is learning it takes longer to get better. If I play with better players and follow/observe them, and try hard to learn/not get in the way I find I learn heaps faster, and gain strategies as well. The comm uses/looks after the vets, so if I follow them, the comm usually sees I'm trying to learn (I tell the comm/team I'm new when I join, and find that they usually use me as builder, repair, cannon fodder or whatever is needed, and are more tolerant) and gives me more leeway. One game the comm asked if I would go as lead to find the enemy, I was being directed by the team to find the enemy, this was fun, even though I was dying a lot, as the experienced players killed the enemy by using me to their advantage. The best bit was the THANKS they all gave me at the end of the game.

    Yeah. I have to agree with Rambo. You get better by challenging yourself with better players.

    Whatever you do don't go commander or gorge ( alien lifeform ) at the start

    Follow your teammates and especially the commanders orders.
    Do what your teammates do.

    Read the manual would help alot.

    Most importantly have fun <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Learn the basics at your level, with newbies or relaxed players. People less likely to get angry. Also learn to comm on such servers.

    However, after you get the basic feel, try to find people a bit better than you (often hard, though).

    Birdy you can go gorge now as there is no added/removed res for it.. so no harm done really, but they hopefully won't just randomly throw stuff up..

    I agree with everyone else.. I played with people at a higher skill level and know I pwn them <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> just be challenged....

    It doesn't. Gorge to your heart's content. You might want to pay attention to what type of upgrade chamber your team want you to drop (ask if unsure). But don't command for a while.

    Yeah, you only get better by losing a bit.
    Commanders only develop tactics when one fails on them.
    Join a server with only one Alien player, and ask them to take it easy on yer to learn the ropes of Comm'ing.
    You eventually learn what works best, what does what, and how much work most commanders really do.

    Aliens, just follow what the others seem to want, or what you think needs to be done.
    They need res, they need upgrades, they need hives, and they want the marines dead.

    Yeh gorges won't destroy the team anymore like in 1.04 but you can still build the "wrong" chamber

    I play alot with the gorge class now because it doesn't have so much pressure anymore <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
    Commanding on the other hand is still too much for me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
