<div class="IPBDescription">serious</div> My dad's father was in the army. My father never knew him. I found this letter giving army information on my grandfather. I am determined to find my grandfather for a gift for my dad on his birthday. Like I said my dad never knew his dad. If I could at least find out where my grandfather is living, or is still living. Or any other personal information. It would mean so much to my dad. My dad has no clue about my search for his father.

My dad's mom had a friend write to the army asking about information on my dad's dad. They where never married. I assume my grandfather just "split" after my dad was born.

I dont know the military terms used so this is what is on the letter.

The letter is dated October 15 1953

and is headed "Department of the Army, Office of the adjutant general, washington 25, D.C."

It states his name (RE: --------, ------)

It has his (SN : # ### ###, Capt.) I used the # signs because I dont want to give awway any personal information just yet. I do know that he must of been a Captain. This could be his dog-tag number.

It has then a boxed that is check two times. and after it it says...

[xx]The latest address available in the Department of the Army is as follows: Hq Co, 1st Bn, 31st Infantry Regiment, APO 7, c/o Postmaster, California.

My dad's mom had a friend write to the army asking about information on my dad's dad. They where never married. I assume my grandfather just "split" after my dad was born.

Please only reply if you are serious about helping me. Any information is greatly appreciated. I know people use these forums who have served in the military and I know they might be able to help somehow.

Thank you.

If you're serious about it, there are also dozens of services that can find a person, but for a fee.

Also, before you go springing the suprise on your dad check with your grandfather to be sure he wants to be found...

His mom never told my dad ANYTHING about his dad.

She still holds a grudge still after 60 years.

    Quite sad really.

If there is some place where I could look up a serial number of people in the military that would be nice.

it would make no difference to my dad if his dad was dead. He never knew him.

But I dont know how this has left a scar on my dad. I just want to suprise him and show how much I love him.

I think this is a great idea. Personally, I wouldn't ask anyone's persmission, I would just go ahead and do it. I wouldn't be surprised if both sides (if asked) would say they didn't want to meet each other, but once they did, I think they would change their mind. It's too easy to hold a grudge.

I think that even if your dad doesn't seem to be outwardly affected or suffering from never knowing him, I think a huge burden would be lifted if he had some closure. If even your grandfather is dead, I think you could put together some photos, letters and information giving insight into who he was. I really can't think of a better gift then this. I hope someone on these boards with a military background can help you.

If you're looking for military people take a look at www.glocktalk.com , over half those people probably were in the military at some point in time...

Hey, I think its great you are trying to find your father's dad as a present showing your love. I think the risk is well worth it and in the end if you do find your grandfather, hopefully minds will have changed.

    Good luck

My Grandfather was in the military during WW2. My Dad has looked up the name of his Tank Battalion and has found websites ran by other sons who's fathers were in it. The sites had photos, contact information, and other details about it's members. Maybe if your Grandfather was in a squad or battalion, you can look it up and hope to find relevant information.

Good luck to you. I pray that it all works out.

I cant thank everyone enough for the help you are giving me.

Thank you for the prayers and posts.

    Thank you so much.

The search continues, but I just dont have enough information. I only have the first and last name of my grandfather. I went the the 31st Infantry Regiment website, no luck there.

I WILL NOT give up, me and my mom are going to write to...

    National Personnel Records Center
    (Military Personnel Records)
    9700 Page Avenue
    St. Louis, MO 63132-5100

    For records or anything else.

I thank everyone again, every e-mail I receive, every post I see, every private message I get. These all give me more strength to find my grandfather for my dad. Thank you so much.

I get this question a lot, I am 16 almost 17 years old. And my dad is currently 49 years old.
