Or does this mean: Yes, you can play HL2, BUT with lag, with 320x240, 0 details, 1 bit color and 0 effects....<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

You should be able to play the game at whatever res and detail you currently play games at. The features all scale down to maintain a stable fps (I believe the standard target is 60fps, but you can set it)

I doubt it. The fact is that, as Flayra said I believe, a direct "port" to HL2 is simply not possible. NS will have to be rebuilt from basically the ground up, and as such I'm sure Flayra isn't going to go for something that's basically just NS with nicer graphics. Not taking advantage of all the features of Source is a waste of both the engine and Flayra's time and effort, and in order to really make it worthwhile NS will have to "evolve" into a rather different game.

I've kept my mouth shut since the announcement of HL2, but I'm finally gonna indulge myself on this one:

It doesn't exist until copies hit the store shelves. How many times have how many software releases (or any engineering project, for that matter) failed to make their deadlines?

This whole thread strikes me as an excercise in counting chickens that haven't hatched. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Um, how's that? Nobody's talking about the release date, and do you honestly think at this point that there's a chance HL2 is going to be cancelled?

Doom III is not on Source. Either
    a) you misread
    b) you read incorrectly.

Perhaps you may be so kind as to provide these sources (no pun intended) for us.

    Onwards and upwards, I say!!!

Don't forget that a lot of people might stop playing HL mods when HL2 (and new mods) come out... It might be worthwhile moving NS forward.

It would be sad to see NS over-shadowed by whatever mods are planned for HL2. It's probably wise to asume that any new, good looking, HL2 mods will have greater media attention than HL mods. Let's just hope HL doesn't get forgotten amongst all this HL2 stuff, huh?

This is definitly one of those wait and see affairs. While I have high hopes for Half Life 2. We can only guess at how well the community will take to it. Half Life has a niche market. Its a great game that still runs on older machines, people still buy the game because many people still don't have 1Gig systems. Hell HL and its engine are practically undead, they refuse to die!

Now, as far as I know much of NS could be ported if the Devs wanted to. From what I read in PCGamer it will have tools to port the maps, models, and some of the source. Work will of course have to be done to update everything. More poly's for the models and the maps can now have destructable surfaces. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> (Imaging a skulk biting support beams of a roof and making it collapse on a Rine and his Resource tower?) With the added features, the code would certainly be redone to take advantage of the new abilities of the engine.

In the end, sooner or later NS will need a new engine to survive. When this will happen is anyones guess. I do know that the devs here are pretty clever and they will realize when the Half Life NS is dying and proceed to update it.

Maybe there will be a way to directly port models and maps, but that's really besides the point. Even if there were a button Flayra could press that could carbon copy NS into HL2 just as it is, that would be pointless. The game will have to be recreated from scratch anyway to really do justice to the Source engine. If Flayra really wants any potential "NS2" to have as dedicated a fanbase as the first one does, he would be better off just creating a new mod placed in the NS world and retaining the basic FPS/RTS theme. Obviously that's not something to undertake lightly and no matter what he chooses to do(if anything) I wouldn't expect it to come anytime soon.

Personally I'd really like to see a timeline "sequel" to Natural Selection, where the Kharaa have managed to infect a docked ship and spread onto a planet(s), and the game is based on largescale planetary marine/alien combat. That certainly provides a lot more opportunities to take advantage of the Source engine than a basic recreation of NS does. An interesting excerpt from the manual:

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->There is also the danger that a fallen ship will automatically dock at a major city-base, or land on an Earth-compatible planet. Lord help us if this happens ? we have seen what they do with the limited resources on ships ? and can only imagine an entire planet of Kharaa.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Drool.

And before anyone comes and says "omg that isn't going to happen lamerz lolol" or something along those lines, it's just baseless speculation. Let us have our dreams.

I'm not sure a direct port of NS would be pointless. It would be an excellent proof of concept that would no doubt be a great base to start from when thinking about a real NS2. I doubt the devs would release it, but if they did, I wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing at all: it certainly wouldn't hurt anyone, it would help spread word of mouth about the game among new HL2 fans, and the rumored better netcode might make the mod even more playable on Source than it currently is. Sure, the textures and detail wouldn't be as good as you would expect on Source, but they would be just as good, if not better, than what we have now.

That said, I don't think there is a chance in Hades of it. A real NS2 will require a real rethinking/redesign, and who knows how long that could take.

The main thing to remember is that NS came pretty late to the HL mod scene in terms of its popularity. If Source has the same kind of longlevity that HL had, then they've got all the time in the world.

Well I would be surprised of NS never moved to HL2.. the only downside is that you may lose a FEW people (u know what.... its time to upgrade guys if thats the case) most games are starting to go higher and higher at an unbelievable rate... also Flayra always wanted to add stuff to NS but couldn't for engine limitations... volumetric flamethrower anyone? outdoor maps might be a possibility if they tinker with upgrades and such... hell they only did NS in spaceships cause its indoor, i believe r_speeds might be an issues, bad rendering, no classes to fit outdoors really, marines could use vehiclles out doors (thats why they would want to do it probably <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->) maybe even have alien vehicles or something....

NS is NOT a low-end game as far as HL mods go. I'm on an Athlon 2400+, 512 DDR RAM, and a Radeon 9500 Pro. Not top of the line by any means, but it completely owns just about any other HL mod out there. Running at 1024x768, I get anywhere from 30 to 60 FPS in NS; it never caps at 72. NS is the most graphics intensive HL mod out there as far as I know. If it moves to HL2, it's reasonable to assume that Flayra is not going to be obsessed with low-end compatability to the point that he ignores some of the better features of the engine. As was said, HL2 is going to be hopefully designed with all levels of computers in mind, so people should be able to disable options in "NS2" until it works well on their computer. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I am guessing you are running win XP or NT. You are also using OpenGL with that Radeon card. You also probably haven't seen Roobubbas excellent guide to fixing the 60 fps problem that most people get.

Here is a link to the topic that will help you get 100 fps instead of 60 or lower.

Sourced from an interview with MonseE:

"GGMania: Do you plan to release Natural Selection for Half-Life 2 ?

Ned 'MonsieurEvil' Pyle: Wouldn't that be awesome? We are as ready to get our hands on the new SDK as everyone. It would basically be a complete re-write from the ground up, as we would want to take advantage of increased poly counts, physics, map capabilities, etc. We'll have to see how things pan out."

OFCOURSE the NS team is just as excited about the prospect of NS on Half-Life 2 as everyone else is... I'd say they're MORE excited than people who just play the game cause they've put their heart and soul into this for ages. But as MonseE said, it would be like starting from scratch (basically), and I think there is VERY little appreciation for how much work it would be.

As for Half-Life 2 and system specs, game programmers have to carefully balance current system requirements with longevity. It's important to remember that HL2 has been in development for 5 years, so the hardware will have changed significantly in the time they've been developing it... as such they would have HAD to design and develop it for hardware that didn't even exist at the time, at the same time keeping it scalable so all the bells and whistles can be turned off if need be to run it for the gameplay.

Above everything else, I think you're much more likely to see the NS team embark on a HL2 version if their is continued support for NS on HL1... so cut with the "NS will die if it doesn't get ported over" **** please...

Little appreciation? The game has been downloaded a million times, servers are packed and this forum has thousands of people visiting everyday... All in it's first release... I would call that appreciation.

If the dev team did move to HL2 and do the same job with NS as they did with the HL engine they would have so much appreciation it would be ... lots!

basically they have to recode everything, remake all the maps, redo all the textures, redo all the models, and redo everything else (well only redo them if you want everything to look decent on the engine compared to everything else) (which takes time(major issue when you aren't getting paid to do something)) and NS is perfect as it is right now, sure HL2 engine would make it much more prettier and it might make it more fun, but it's fine right now on the HL1 engine. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Uh, no way. That's longer than most mods take to make from scratch.

Again, it sounds like everything will transfer over very very easily. The real problem is not porting NS to Source, but asking yourself "why do that at all then?" It would make more sense TO start from scratch, rethinking the game and taking advantage of the engine from the ground up.

I am SO into this idea. As an avid Lerk player, I've been hoping that someone would make an outdoors-ish map that would be heavily dependant on jetpacks and lerks to traverse. Combining some of those City scenes from the HL2 video with NS gives me the chills. I hope and pray They will do this.

Looking at that video that was released on steam (and of course seeing th e3 video) with that uh thing gordon used to summon those aliens, made me thing of NS and how it may be nice in a sequeal to have bots play along with players. Maybe they could be used as low lvl attack drones or used as assitants to other races, or to gather resources... blah blah.

Not to mention with support (or better support) for attaching models together you can probably create a nice effect that actually shows the onos swallowing a marine whole lol.

Am sure there are many many other things that can be done....
