Who Understands Ns?

<div class="IPBDescription">About 1%?</div> I know preaching to the converted here, but on pubplay how many people do you think <b>understand</b> how to play NS. The 1% in the thread title is a little low, but I'd be surprised if you think its over 50%.

The games I've been having recently (even on a regular server) have been awful.
Things I've seen:

-Aliens not capping res asap! (or ever)
-Redemption Skulks.
-TF at MS with 8 turrets at round start.
-Lots of TF's with 4 turrets up front, back left open.
-Phase tech not being researched until 10min mark.
-2 ARM, 2 TF in base at round start.

I mean these people understand <i>nothing</i> of NS. I was never this bad, firstly I listened to advice secondly I understood that the things that mattered were Res and Hives. It's a vital axiom of the game, if you don't 'get it' how can you find NS enjoyable?

So what % of people who play NS understand it?

Gee, since I'd say the playerbase of NS is somewhere around 25,000 considering that it's more popular than TFC, I'd say the % is 15-20%.

And by 'understand' I mean a rudamentary understanding.

But oh well. Pubs are still fun no matter how dumb the people on it are, you just have to make the best of your situation, or get some other good people to play on it.

The thing that gets me is you get a team of clanners/regulars and a bunch of idiots on the other. When another clanner/reg joins they then just join the other team. When asked you usually get "because we didn't want to lose".

I got so angry I turret farmed and eventually they gave up and F4ed (they couldn't break it, I'm a good turret farmer when mad).

To me, the balance, gameplay or anything isn't killing this game. It's the fact you have one team vastly superior to the other nearly all the time and games are decided in 10 seconds.

actually every time I look on HLSW server search TFC slightly beats NS and the difference is getting bigger, I think it accelerated a little with the new verison release <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

The majority of players who understand a great deal of NS play mostly only a few servers. I only play on CoRF, and a few select clan servers that I have found a good base of regulars who play well. Try finding a few servers of your own that suit what you want out of NS. I belive there are many post around where people have listed servers that are full of players that are fun to play with.

As for your question about what % actually understand the game is very dependent on how much you mean by understand. 5-15% of people could probally write an NS manual listing all the guns, upgrades, maps, buildings, Hives on all maps ect. The rest of the players are mostly just pubbers who dont understand a whole lot other than HMG = better than LMG

I must say that i played lot of pub games from the release of 1.0 and i mas admit that there are some good times. Not all of pub-gamers are "NSPlayer". Lot of them are just some clan members that were bored and wanna have some fun sloughtering newbie's. Some non-clan members are good too but they hev much less respect from other players.

I was playing today with Kid-A as a com. Ns_eclipse. 3 hives, 1 under siege from key hole. Some RTs. Lot of rines were duing rushing WOL that was instantly healed from every dmg what was taken. Kid-A dropped me a shotgun so i was able to hunt down some gorges. Everything was going good till rines was rushed by kamikaze skulks. Ive seen peeps that was walking without ammo thinking that this teethy little basraed will have mercy on them but they all were sloughtered. I died, Key-Hole and south loop felt to the enemy. Only 1 rt, bunch of dumb rines and laughing onos. Kid-A sayd "sorry, they are unstoppadble". Why? Coz THOSE DUMB MARINES! We have tutorials after instalation, manuals, vet's but there are milions of stupid players that just dont know how to play and only coz them pub games suck.

I think that less then 30% understands the idea of NS and NS as a game to play. Less then 5% even looked at manual (i was reading it coz i like it and i like thos stories <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->)

BTW. Thx Kid-A for great com trying to save whole world only with bunch of dumb 13 y/o marines <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I think the 15% estimate is a good one. By that, I mean people who have some grasp of what balance consists of, knows how the res system works, doesn't use numbers as letters, etc.

I think that pubbies are smarter then clanners give them credit for, at least on an individual basis. I don't really want to get into the dumb pubbie vs ""elite"" clanner argument, since getting into some clans is only as hard as adding the clan tag.

    My problems with public servers:

    1. Rambo!
    2. Aliens that don't drop the res node, go Fade as soon as they have the res, and die.
    3. Gorges that drop sensory, but only one, because "OMG! Teh cloek!" when half the team is screaming "MC ****!"
    4. Rambo! With 45 res worth of gear.

    **OMG**

I just wasted 20 minutes typing a post that got wiped by a twitchy connection!

    The basic summary was
    1) try to be open minded some of the noob things suggested are actually valid tactics - if a litle off beat
    2) Some people need more help geting to grips with NS, I have just checked on Kid-A and he spent 15 hours a week playing NS2.0. So Kid, not everyone can do that but you are in an ideal position to teach the newbies what it's all about.
    3) Just cos your good doesnt mean you know it all. We are all learning -see point 1. More damage is done by those that insist they know everything than those than admit they dont. (and I know your not one of those Kid)

I think 40% of players have some prior knowledge of NS before they start. I think 20% on top of that think it's something other than what it is. I think 80% of player knows roughly whats going on after a half dozen games on each side. I also think we can improve this ratio by educating people in game rather than shouting "**** off you noob".

    Be happy. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Id say I had a fair understanding of 1.0x though about 5 months prior to my understanding I suddenly one day was hit by a complete realisation of most of the "obvious" aspects. as for 2.0, no idea ;/

But with a good comm, who cares who knows what except how to follow orders? And really, in my experience (although maybe I am playing on servers with good people..), I've been able to put everyone on the team to use, even the rambos who go running off without orders. The grunts don't have to understand the game, and I think a lot of people realize that they don't understand it at first and accept it because they still function.

Although, really, its not all <i> that </i> hard to grasp, is it?

I suggest that everyone who runs into a blatant newb make a simple choice.

    1) You can yell and scream at the newb to relieve all your preteen angst.
    2) You can accept them as a part of the experience of online gaming.
    3) You can let go of the mouse and CALMLY explain the ways of NS.

I've far too often played with people who seem to have bet their genitals on the outcome of a match. Relax people, you'll live longer.
  • ApeApe Join Date: 2003-06-17 Member: 17448Members, Constellation
Going from the pub servers I usually play on, I'd say about 60% of the average NS population have a decent knowledge of what's going on, even if they don't know every single map location off by heart.

Insulting newbies isn't going to solve the problem either. If you see a guy who's just randomly running around looking lost and lonely, try talking to him.. ask him if he wants a hand. If someone admits they're a newbie, try to teach them the basics. Teach them to <b>ask for help.</b> Suffering in silence is the worst thing for a newbie to do.. he doesn't learn anything and ends up copping flak from the rest of the people on the server.

Remember: the more people you help, the smaller the newbie population gets.

    you forgot choice #4:

recycle every structure, use the res building useless comm chairs in base, scream at the noobs then type exit in console.

and btw, choice 3 is never an option. Ever.

I'd say around %30-40 of the ones im on with have enough knowlage to play a good game without silly mistakes, inactivity or an inability to defeat turrets.

Hehe, I'd be interested in a heads up of how many people out there don't just understand the basics but the whole mechanics and workings of NS, little things like knowing how to bite electrifieds without being shocked, swaping weapons whilst loading up to speed things up (and which weapons this doesn't work with - I mean shotteh cos of it's long readying anim), knowing the little differances in hitboxes from moddels, and being able to sneak moderately effectively as all classes by predicting movements of your opponants alittle... Hehe, just curious about how many are getting close to being "one with the NS" <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I have got no problem with newbies.

I do got a problem with a few people though:

    1) The commander that everyone tells him to eject but he doesn't, you get to vote eject him and then someone of the same nature immediately takes his place, then gets bored and then the first one enters yet again... resulting in less alien killing and more fanatazies about a grinder and that comm's flesh...

    2) Probably the most annoying type of all: Those who don't follow orders even you shout GO TO CARGO BAY NOW darnit or LEAVE RT GO CARGO.
So annoying when marines don't follow orders, I have seen numerous players walking away from base while I made them a build way point in base before they left, OR, waiting in some obscure place for me to place a RT while I say/waypoint everyone to go to specific locations.

    3) As someone mentioned... those who think they know anything, I surely don't know anything, I'm probably not that good of a comm but I have yet to be called a crappy/sucky/insert any other ****y word you want here comm, except for 1 guy that entered when aliens had 3 hives, 5 onoses 2 fades 1 lerk and they were somehow not able to break through a defence of 5 turrets and a few rines (2 HA HMG, other regular or for short time SG) that yelled at me to go outta comm cause he wants to try and then when we lose (SURPRISE) he says I'm crap.

I agree with Ape, you must incourage the "newbies" to come forward, and ask for help. If you don't, it's basically playing a game for nothing. I, myself, being a supporter to the Natural-Selection community, would help back, and I'm sure 90% of this community would. This game has gotten so much more popular, after the release of 2.0. I'd hate to see it die off, because you couldn't/wouldn't help a "newbie".

I'm more annoyed with the people that <i>think</i> they understand ns better than anyone else.

I have been called a noob comm for:

Building only one IP at the start of the game
Building phasegates to strategic locations that are fairly close to ms, but still a good 15 secs away.
Not building a TF at the beginning of the match. (I like to ask for base guarding volunteers, and give them shotties)
Building a TF at the begginning of the match. (If I know the aliens would mince the people guarding)
Putting the TF at the res first.
When elec was 30 res, putting a TF instead of using elec. (2 turrets > elec and only 5 res more, plus its upgradeable)
Not giving out enough weapons. (oh, how they love to hit eject when I refuse to give them things)
    Trying to relocate.
    Not Trying to relocate.
    Upgrading armor first.
    Upgrading weapons first.

So, unless the newbies are truly obnoxious (or retarded), they usually figure out that they can follow others to die less, find things more easily, and be more useful. It really is the people that sort-of know the game that really give commanders headaches. "I'm not going there commander, we need to cap upper sewer res!" Yeah, right.

TBH I understand a decent amount of NS, but there are a lot of little things I just havent picked up yet. Armor 1 used to improve marine durability by one bite, don't know if it still does. Does metabolize also convert damage into energy or is this something dropped/I made up? How many wepon lvl upgrades does it take to get a lvl3 cara skulk back to the same number of bullets lvl0 vs lvl0? Stuff like that. I just learned today that gorges can't "unweld things" with spit anymore.

There's nothing wrong with playing counter to the norm, with good reason. Which means if you see someone doing something potentially stupid (such as redemption skulk), don't flame them. Tell them "how it's done", if you have to, but don't flame. Flamage gets you nowhere - it doesn't help newbies, it's totally irrelevant if someone knows full well what they're doing and has deliberately made the choice, and it's exactly the reaction llamas are trying to provoke. So don't do it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
