You can make .dem files into .avi files.... well kinda. The EXACT process requires: Playing the pre-recorded demo Outputting your scene(s) of choice to hundreds of .bmp files Compressing all those .bmp's into an .avi.
Sounds complicated but i've done it quite a few times and it's nothing too taxing.

Just to point this out: There is no way to convert a *.dem file into a usual video codec file <b>directly</b> as it simply doesn't contain any image information (that's why demo files are so small). It just contains frame-by-frame entity information that can be read by the Half-Life engine so you can rerender the recorded scene. However, as said in the tutorial (nice job btw) HL offers the possibility to create an image sequence of a game and finally convert it into a video with a third party program...
