Choppiness In Ns

Sound chops + Vid Chops etc.
Okay, before I redo all of my partitions and reformat each one in NTFS, I just thought I'd ask here and see if anybody can help. I'd rather not have to do it.

I had NS running just beautifully at one point on my PC:

Windows XP
AthlonXP 1500
Radeon All-in-Wonder 8500DV
Integrated sound: AC '97
768 MB RAM
Gigabyte Triton Mobo GA-7VAX
One 40 GB drive partitioned into 10/30 (D and E respectively) XP is installed on D
One 80 GB drive with CS and everything installed

C and D are NTFS, E is FAT32

It didn't seem to care very much how high I set the resolution, and it didn't seem to mind 32-bit colour either.

Then.... I got a virus... don't ask.

Re-install XP...

I put all the drivers back on; the ones on my mainboard disk, directX9, the drivers from ATI's site, being very careful to follow ATI's instructions. I put counter-strike, etc. back on.

Now, when I get into a game, I get a pretty low framerate, but it's hard to notice until I choose a team. That is when things get messy, it seems like I get 2 frames every second, and the sound is awful, sounds repeat, or something, a gun click sounds like: *click-lick-ick* if you can understand that.

I tried:
-Updating all of my drivers for my motherboard.
-I defragmented C:, where the game is.
-Another XP re-install. Double-checking everything.
-Uninstalling everything from C: and putting it on D:
-I tried Counter-Stike, and the training mode seemed to have a completely normal framerate, couldn't notice a problem, but I'll set up a more accurate test of it if someone thinks it's necessary.

Has anybody had this problem? The ONLY thing I can think of is to re-do all of my partitions. I can only imagine it's something stupid that I've forgotten, I'm at my wits-end.

Any background progs running? Those can REALLY kill FPS.

Make sure you turn ff autohelp, it can bring down FPS (cl_autohelp 0)

Remember u can change cl_autohelp 0 to 1 if you need it again.

Try running NS in compatibility mode! This can really help. Try Windows 98 or Windows ME.

To do this, right click on the shortcut or the actual program (I switched to my OS to ME, so I cant remember to well) click compatibility mode, choose which one you want, then click ok.

Well, I closed a bunch of non-essential stuff in XP, I tried running it in 98/me compatibility mode, and I turned off autohelp. No good.

Mmm, integrated sound card, no offense but these really suck alot, they are ok for word, excel and such things, but throw some game at em and you WILL have problems (choppiness, sounds playing wrong and even computer freezing and crashing). First if you have EAX or A3D enabled in HL (NS) disable it, if it wont work i think theres some command to run HL in low sound quality that might help too.

    The commands are
"hisound 0" (disables high quality sound)
"loadas8bit 1" (forces loading of lower quality 8bit sounds)

write this into yer console without da quotes

Open your config.cfg (found in your ns folder) and look for ati_npatch and ati_subdiv. Change the values to 0.

    "r_dynamic 0" disables dynamic lightning
