Find an undelete program (sorry, i can't offer any advice which, just google for them) and see if it can be recovered from your HDD.

How about reinstalling it from your cd? It's the absolute fastest way to do it. You do own the game right?
[edit]If I had used my eyes and read the post he wrote then I would have read what he wrote[/edit]

But what does it matter that it had a link to the desktop? It should be in the Recycle bin unless he held down shift while he deleted it or emtied the bin.

Maybe he only deleted the link and the exe is still in your cs directory. Have you tried to look for it there and generate a new link?

There's nothing you can do without a CD and cd-key.

Can you clarify "... i left out of town" It sounds to me like a lame excuse for pirating software. But i could be grossly wrong. Just knowing me if i move around, my games come with me, especially those i play often.

The thing being if i pay my hard earned money while someone else steals the game, i think it has something to do with myself and every other gamer that paid for the game.

But anyway, i wasn't accusing, just speculating.

And if he had the game then copied it, that would leave 2 copies lying around and surely makes the "left it out of town" story just that little more unbelievable.

weather you payed for it or not, doesnt change the fact that its not your buisness. you payed for it, it has nothing to do with HIM at ALL!!.

but anyways, back to his problem, if you still the file add me to msn ill send it over dude..

It matters in that the rules of the board forbids warez talk. On a side note, a friend d/l a cracked retail cstrike, and lost his machine to a virus. Had to do a complete reinstall.

I'd go for a reinstall from the CD, even if you've lost the CD key, it should be in the registry (have a hunt). For undeleting software, try download.com, another friend managed to delete some of his original artwork, and found a small prog there that restored it for him.

oh, and :esuna:, best excuse has got to be "My brother/sister/friend/dog deleted it/installed the cheat/teamkilled...."

He's saying that he's insulted because people steal software, while he's working hard to pay for it. The cost eventually goes back to him, because people raise prices due to software piracy. I miss the days that being a "Warez Kiddie" was a respectable title among the community.

CS Retail (which is what the cstrike.exe is from) is a retail product and does cost money.

And i suppose it could be a coincidence that while software piracy has become more rife that PC games are costing £5-£10 more in the last year or two.

re: the CD-key - there's no need to hunt for it in the registry. HL (or CS) will find it there itself when you reinstall the game. The only time you need to hunt for your CD key is when you need to change it.

However, with this chap's problem I'd wonder whether actually just the shortcut has been deleted.

    Okay, the topic at hand:

Undelete programs are absolutely useless unless you install them BEFORE you delete something. You are thinking of other data recovery methods which are very expensive and require a considerable amount of man-hours to complete, and are therefore reserved for vital and irreplacable data, not something that comes on a CD.

Copying it from the cd is possible, but often excessively difficult because the compression schemes that are often used on game cds are not generally available in common consumer products. It's probably in a *.cab file, which you can find something to open it up on the internet.

Still, a reinstall is by far the simplest solution. Just backup your config files first.

Lessons to be learned: 1) When sharing a computer with either the computer illiterate or possibly malicious, use some form of file security. 2) Asking for a missing file on the internet is asking for a flaming. If you need a file, ask a local friend.

Wrong, just this month i accidently deleted something, i downloaded a small, free data recovery program (god knows what it was called now) and it worked fantastically.

When data is "deleted" in windows, it's still there, it's not deleted, as you probably know it's just marked to be overwritten, if it's not been overwritten it can be recovered, a quick scan in a data recovery program will give you a list of deleted files able for recovery.

it's best to have it installed before you delete it, yes, but that's only really because it decreases the chance that whatever you install after deleting a file overwriting the file you wish to recover.

Admins note: I do not know your personal opinions on software piracy, and I honestly don't care; warez talk is prohibited by the rules, period. Move these debates to PM or another place, because they won't be tolerated in here.
