Unable To Connect To Any Server

Strapon2Strapon2 Join Date: 2003-06-02 Member: 16941Members
<div class="IPBDescription">but i am online</div> my internet connection is fully functional, i have made no changes whatsoever to my computer in any way, but for some reason i can't connect to any servers.

i have 2.0, and have been playing it since it came out, and it has worked fine. then all of the sudden when i click a server to join it, i fail connection one, then two, then three, and also four. so the error is failed connection after 4 retries.

i am possitive that i am connected to the internet because my internet browser works, and also with the ingame server browser when i hit update/refresh i get a <i>new</i> list every time, just as normal.

i have no idea what is wrong, any help is welcome.

What happens if you (temporarily) disable your firewall and just let all IP traffic through? Can you connect then?

i don't really know how... but even so, i have never had troubles of any kind with that in the past... ever.

any other suggestions?

(all other online games i play work... i need to try my HL mods now)

added:
nope... all HL mods fail all retries, but they all have connection to WON servers and are able to get an updated list... hmm

Not having a problem in the past doesn't really mean anything. Otherwise, there would be no need for repairmen. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

If you don't know how to disable your firewall, why not just remove it altogether? Just plug straight into your internet connection. If browsing servers starts working (and won auth does not use the same ports if I recall), first step is to update the firmware on your firewall/router.

i'll try the firmware.

(because i don't want that worm, i read that if you drop your fire wall, even for a second, you can get it! not that it does any damage... but it is anoying)

solution to not getting worm:
go to start menu, find button called windows updater

use it

update windows ALL THE WAY, you wont get anything.

Than is correct. For future reference, check with your vendor (in this case MS) rather than 'hearing that...'. You'll learn the real story and be better off for it.

I was having this same exact problem when I installed ns v2.0. I didn't understand why it was working like that so I reinstalled ns and it fixed the problem. I had saved my config from the previous ns v2.0 installation and it refused to connect again. Finally I checked through the config file and found out that fps_modem had somehow been set to = for no reason. I just went through the entire config file and checked for errors. I found that after I fixed my config file I could easily get into any server. I hope that helps.

quick one, instead of reinstalling NS first thing

simply try naming config.cfg to config.bak and then running NS (it will auto gen the basic config.cfg <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->)

Instead of disabling the firewall, forward the HL port through to your computer with the router. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the client port 27005?

here's some things in my config that im not sure about: (i don't know if they could cause it)
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->fps_modem "0.0"
+jlook
+mlook
_snd_mixahead "0.1"
the command "ds"
bind "~" "console 1.0; toggleconsole"
<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

but remember... it is for all my mods, including HL so i bet it's not with the NS config file..

try changing your fps_modem to 20
• MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
I'd be interested in seeing more testing with the fps_modem settings. The installer code does not touch that setting, so it will be whatever your settings used to be previously with your copy of HL or CS retail. That setting stopped being used after HL 1.1.1.0 supposedly, so I'd be surprised if it were the issue (mine is set to 0.0, for example). Still - if anyone wants to test this more we'd be pretty greatful here in NS dev land...

I vaguely remember having this problem myself before, and fixing it - it eludes me at the moment.
If all other half-life mods work and NS somehow doesn't, then it almost has to be the config files, maybe one bad setting somewhere. So unless you have trouble with other HL mods, or even HL classic deathmatch, best bet would be to create a fresh config file - that is, delete the current one or rename it.

(and yes, now that I think about it - the fps_modem line is unlikely to be the trouble)

Ok, let's see:
Half-life+any mod for it does not work. always fails after 4 retries.

1. I have set my IP to a Static adress, no longer automaticly determined.

2. I have updated my firmware on my firewall router.

3. I have the dreaded "BEFSR41" linksys router that has problems like this all the time.

4. I have tested Half-life on every computer I own, and none of them work. (all the same problem)

5. I have 1.1.1.0 and everything normally required to run Half-life and any mod.

6. I don't know what to do.

I just looked at the support page for this router ( <a href='http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=1' target='_blank'>http://www.linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=1</a> ) and they make the following comment:

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Games over the Router. If playing games like Quake or Battle.net, port 27960 must be opened in the router's advanced feature. Refer to the manual and the help button on the router on how to open ports. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I have no recollection whatsoever of HL ever using this port, but it can't hurt to try.

AAARRGG!!!

I tryed that port, I tried 27005 and 27015.

and then I tried 1 through 65535.
Nothing seems to do the trick...

How do I set up a static WAN adress?(how do I determine my DNS, IP, whatnot?) I have already done static individual computer LAN adresses.

A static WAN address can only be given to you by your ISP (i.e. you buy a static IP from them).
