Squad 5 has the bestest sounds of all. Both for the 'rines (who get the ultra manly "You're Squad Five!"), and for the comm who gets the sexy "Squad Five"). Just take a listen!
Personally, I think Squad 2 and Squad 3 are the worst... Squad 1's not bad, but, oh, Squad 5 is just SO fine.
Squad five is the best because, as commander, you can say "Squad five, you're going to the hive" (which rhymes), and you only send the best to attack the hive.

Odd... I put my observatories into squad 5, because they're the best (never complain, never need ammo, decloak everything, and will scan ANYWHERE you ask on demand!) However, I'm fairly sure they've never taken a hive for me... Which, now that I think of it, might dislodge them from their favored position.

When I put marines in squad five, they seem to get some sort of 'moral boost' and are slightly more combat effective just because they don't want to lose face after being placed in 'teh best squad'.
If a marine performs horribly in squad five, I demote them to squad 4.
The observatory and other static buildings I bumped to the lower numbers.
anyone notice that when you place ppl in squads, they work together alot more! 3 Squads is more or less all you need most times, and I find that ppl really start to work together and don't split up as much at all.
Keep your squads to 2, 3, or 4 members, 3 teams of 4 is just perfect.

It's this kind of thing that makes NS so freakin cool to me... that the commander isn't just directing the battle, but also dealing with the subtleties of morale. And that's exactly what this is -- Squad 5 *is* a morale boost, for some reason or another. Putting your marines in squads *does* encourage teamwork, because it makes them feel like they're part of a group that the commander is specifically directing.
Heh, beginning of every game I make EVERYONE squad five, its a morale booster. Ever notice the squad sayings get more angry as the numbers go up? "You are squad one, you cute little thing you" then "YOUR FKIN SQUAD FIVE NOW GET ME A PAI NOW"
