Packet Loss And Hiccups

System specs:
Amd Athlon XP 2400+
512 MB RAM
GeForce 4 5200 128 MB Video
Sound Blaster Audigy Gamer
60 gig harddrive
Epox 8KHA+ mobo

So anyway, i'll be playing NS and everything is smooth and dandy. But every once in a while, the game freezes for 3 or 4 seconds, then resumes. Nobody else seems to notice it, because usually when i unfreeze, i'm dead, meaning that someone took the opportunity to frag me while i was busy twitching around frozen. The freezing seems to occur pretty regularly, but isn't triggered by any particular event, such as a gunfight or other heavy-load sequence. On netgraph 3, i notice that the loss jumps to around 15 when i freeze, then goes back down to 0 when things get back to normal. My ping sometimes jumps to the 400 or 500s as well. Can anyone help me with this problem? My computer is decent enough to run NS smoothly. I just need to figure out why it just decides to crap out every once in a while. It's really annoying and i'd appreciate any advice anyone would have on this matter. thanks

    elaborate on "freeze"

does your entire computer freeze - where no matter what you do there is no response, or is it a connection freeze - where you can turn and such, but you can't move around?

assuming that it is the latter (from the title of the thread), include your connection speed in future posts

At first this sounded like either a bad connection day for you, or maybe a bad server or two

how many servers have you experienced this on (try more than 5)? does this happen with any other Half-Life mods (or classic HL deathmatch)? does this happen regularly or only today?

include your config.cfg from your half-life/ns folder if the problem hasn't gone away by now

This look like a simptom of a common problem when DSL is connected via a network card straight into your PC.

What happenes is that if your network card has no IP address assigned to it then it will halt traffic while it looks for an IP address, causing these slowdowns. The simple fix is to assign an IP address to your network card (not the dsl connection ). This will stop it looking for one.

Otherwise I'd try to figure out if all traffic stops or just NS, and does anything else on your computer slow down?

I figured it out. It was just a rate issue. Apparently my rate was set too high at 20000 and i lowered to 10000 and now everything is peachy . Thanks for the contributions!
