Mines Are They Now Useless

I find that whenever i am a commander, if i get rines to go hunting for gorges or to secure RTs, my base is heavily underdefended. If i defend my base with a rine, TF and 4 sentries i don't have enuf res to expand. Mines on the otherhand i have not seen used in a long time. Would anyone recommend me to use mines or are they really that useless now..

    I. Mines = Onos traps

So you get that irritating redemption onos that runs around, gores a few marines, then redeems. Annoying? Well, the ultimate pest-repellant is ... the mine!

    Here's the formula:

2 packs of mines- place each mine on top of the other in an area the Onos runs through. But make sure it isn't obvious where the mines are. Now, get a marine to bait the Onos - maybe shoot it and then start running like crazy. The Onos will follow, and if you placed the mines correctly, it will be on its side - dead.

Similarily, you could kill fades in the same fashion - but you don't need as many mines for guaranteed success.

    II. Offensive mining

Don't like those skulks trying to reach you as you're jetpack/shotgunning the hive to death? Take a pack of mines with you and place it on the walls on the sides of the hive (NOT right next to you, unless you have a deathwish). Now since they are proximity mines, the skulks will trigger them and will die - damaging the hive in the process.

Or, you could just mine the ground around the hive so it is harder for skulks to manouvre. Unfortunately their deaths are of no use to you until the suicide killing by mines is fixed.

    III. Defensive mining

So they have two hives, and the gorges are driving you mad with bilebombs. You can slow them down by placing mines in key areas where they bilebomb from. Place them around entrances, vents, but not near buildings.

I'm sure there are more creative uses for mines. I can't think of any more right now.

    yes it does

If there was one I would just turn a marine into a standing trap of doom cover him in mines and soon we can watch him and the aliens blow up into pieces....the explosions from all those mines should be more than enough to kill an Onos, let alone 2.

    Yes it does...

Another tactic I found is that is useful is putting them around RTs at the beginning of the game. This stops the initial skulk attack on them, and it doesnt cost the 30 res for electricity. Also, put them in high traffic dark places, like the long tunnel in hera to maintence, and in corners in mineshaft. Also, puttin some in the vents, once a few of your guys have JPs is a nice way to stop those friggin lerk gas attacks. Space em out to, so if they get one, they dont trigger the other ones off

Mines have their uses, they just arent the same as in 1.04.

    I have an idea

    right next to vents

mines rock. Its pretty easy for a motivated team of mariens to keep a gorge out your base which means your mines arent going to be countered untill 3 hive fades hit the sceen.
something else to consider. Most aliens teams go sensor or motion over Defense which means mines are a one shot kill aginst skulks and lerks, Fades and gorges I belive fall to 2 and a pack of 5 means an easy kill on a 100 evolution.
I as a marine beg for mines if aliens do a senosr rush, Cloak all you want, mines will still kill your invisible a$$

The only problem that in good alien teams, the skulks will celerity rush the mines to make a gap, and having been on the receiving end, I know its bloody tricky trying to replace exploded mines when there's an onos or two outside.

Mines can be a viable defense against early skulks rush's if you really need your last man out on the field.

right thx i shall try that first reply cos it seems like fun to blow up onoses

Good luck with that idea, because you'll need a hell of a lot of luck to find an Onos who won't wait until a skulk has ran past to check for mines.

I disagree. The Onos trap has worked wonders. I've managed to get clan players caught in it along with normal pub players. If you do it right, and are smart about it, it won't fail. I made a seperate topic about it.
