I Finally Have Power!

<div class="IPBDescription">NYC Rulez!!!1oneone</div> Only took approx 22hours and 56 minutes for my house to get back the power.
Anyone else have any viscious things happen because of this?
I had to wait 6 hours for a ride back from work. Wife said I never called. Idiots insist on having cordless phones that dont work. Then they remember to hook up the old analog, but fail to put the ringer on. Yes, Pieces of work I do business with.
Kinda fun having no traffic lights.

    The power plants were working fine, it was a grid overload at some transformer that caused the problem...

    Wind power would actually be WORSE... calm day and the power goes out..

    As for nuclear, it is quite promising to see these new decay acceleration techniques to render waste harmless, but until it's refined nuclear waste remains the most expencive material to dispose of (because you can't.. you just bury it) which raises the cost of nuclear power to one of the most expencive solutions.

    except for the ocasional meltdown

    not to mention that we have to cool them. And the best way to cool a nuclear reactor is by running river water through the coolant system. So who cares if we kill a few fish sices, we at least have clean limitless energy right?

    This is exactly whats happening in Europe right now, they had a major heatwave and had to increase output of the nuclear plants, many many fish are now dead.

    Actually, there are a few wind turbine stations in Canada, and entire cities run off them. What they do is STORE the electricity. Currently, Canada has enough power stored to power the Maritime (Ontario, Quebec) Provinces for 15 years.

    Besides, hydroelectric power is the cleanest, most abundant power source in Canada, and it never runs out. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Err?

    That hydroelectric thing threw me off, you do know that hydroelectric is like... Hoover Dam, Niagra falls, etc and wind power are those huge wind-mill things..

    I actually like the new solar plants that point all reflected light into a central ball of salt which super-heats and creates steam which drives turbines.

    Not JUST those. There are TONS of small hydroelectric dams. It's a widely used power source in Canada, followed by Coal, Gasoline and Nuclear. (Not in that order.)

    <img src='http://www.tzone.demon.co.uk/turbine.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
    This is a Wind Turbine. There are a few of these, powering small cities and such.

    <img src='http://www.pittsburghkids.org/science/dam.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
    This is a HydroElectric Dam. There are many of these.

    They use fast-flowing rivers. Fish aren't typically found in fast-flowing rivers.

    If I lived in NYC, walking down the street nekked is what I'd do <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Fortunately, however, I live in upstate New York. I got power back at about 8 PM last night and was understandably quite happy <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    It was apparently the biggest power outage in American history - over 50 million people were without power. Either that or it was the beginning of the alien invasion. I don't know about you guys, but the first thing <i>I</i> thought was '<i>Independence Day</i>'....

    Im not too far from Jamaica, right off the J train. First official stop in Brooklyn. But It took until 3:02 pm for me to get juice back. I mean. It blew, trains down so I didnt plan to go to work.
    *note, im at work now. Fools called me in a mad rush! Bah! at least its a half day for me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->*
    So anyways, I got no games to play. no street fighter, no ns, zilch0r.
    Only thing I had was about 6 hours on my gbasp. And I planned to save them for a toilet run. Its a game AND a light! *yes, I used it to guide the toilet paper*
    But water had went out around 2:30 for another 2-3 hours. But now alls fine.
    Problem was I work till midnight so im used to going to sleep like 2-3am. So its 10pm and my wife wants me to go to sleep and every one is settling in.
    Meanwhile people lighting firecrackers off across the street. fux0r that, I sat around to kill time. Boy was it warm.
    But all in all, fun FUN PHUUUN!

    Okay TheGlow, since you're in NYC perhaps you can answer something I've been wondering:

    Why the hell is everyone freaking out? I understand lights are down, air condition is off in the summer heat, being stuck in elevators, etc... But people are talking as if they were all going to die, because they didn't have electricty for 1 day...

    Crazy...

    DOOM people panic whenever they hear the "state of emergency", it seems if you asked firemen, or police they would say were on standby this is considered a state of emergency, i didnt panic but my niebors did, they came over talking about how the terrorists are planning an attack!, its sad people shouldnt go crazy because thats what terrorists want, fear and chaos

    At least it didn't turn into that game, State of Emergency.

    It seems like ever since 9/11, our government has been trying to scare us. There were many attacks by terrorist's (or just crazy people) on planes, but ever since 9/11, they've been taking things a little too far...

    BTW: I've been without power for 2 days whre i live....it sucked, we played poker for 2 days straight....Then realized we had a generator when we got power back <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->
