New Players With Potential Project

I'm thinking of starting a free program to accelerate the learning process of new players who can communicate well (through a mic or text) and who feel that they can dedicate considerable time to the game. This will be a tutoring program at first, but may grow larger if there is enough interest.

This programme will be ideal for players that:

are starting out and want to learn faster with hands-on assistance

plan to advance to NS competitive (clan) play / want to improve their playing level

can learn quickly

can follow rules

are self-disciplined

are not of type-A personality

can concentrate well when required to do so

This will be the initial thread to determine what responses I get, and whether or not I'll get the project started. People that would like to help me out if this project gets under way can post here too.

Sounds interesting. But once somebody has the basics down, how is this "tutoring" thing better than the player just learning on his own by playing in games? Give me an example.

The tutoring continues through some means of communication (probably IRC if there are more than a few people) but mostly through playing on servers with the tutor(s) giving suggestions, advice, and corrections where seen as fit.

If the player just goes out there and plays on pub servers, he will learn - but without having somebody to evaluate the play, lessons are often forgotten. Usually you will play and the experiences that you go through will be hinting for you to make a change in style/strategy, but often those hints will be received subconsciously (or not at all) and forgotten. With instant feedback, you can recognize these hints easier. Therefore the lessons are learned and understood faster and easier, whereas they can sometimes take weeks to be understood otherwise.

With this project, there will be (hopefully) many people involved who will be able to work together. Knowing who these people are and playing with them NS will make learning easier as well. I can't evaluate the complete impact this project could have on the community - my goal is to introduce more quality to the quantity. New players with potential who would otherwise quit may just want to stick around if they have people to help them out.

One other thing is that you can get confidence from having people backing you up as you learn. I'm sure you've had the experience of approaching something that you'd like to learn - but nobody being there to teach you. If you have somebody helping you learn, your confidence in your ability to succeed increases.

    -------

Now, the technical things. Strategies can be communicated, tricks of the trade (be it skulking or using the jetpack or some other 'trade'), etc. A lot of players may find it difficult and tedious to browse through all of these topics on the message boards. A number of the topics contain misinformation which may inhibit progress. So knowing somebody who has an idea of what is going on and who would be willing to help you out is useful.

Please understand that I haven't yet formulated a complete plan with rigid outlines of what I want to create here.. I'm still molding it in my mind.

It's a nice idea... but it's a bit of overkill imho. A compulsory hazard course would elliminate most of the crippling n00bishness of new players, and stuff like this is very hard to set up and pull off properly. Anyway, the biggest problem of new players isn't that newbies are all intelligent, eager to learn, and prepared to ask questions or seek out training - it's that they're your average CS player who hops into NS without knowing anything about the game or bothering to look. Newbie education needs to target these peoples, mostly.

Its a nice idea, but has been implemented already: the official NSGuides. more info about them on www.readyroom.org

Plus, best way to advance is to play on servers frequented by the uber clans, and watch THEM.

I've only had NS for maybe a week and I've already gotten in a clan.

NSGuides are a group of pts and vets who hang around IRD and help you with any questions you have.

you could try asking them to play with you to answer any questions in game

In the first while of NS, like...really up until 1.04 the NSGuides were always on servers.

I think a commanding class is in order, perhaps not a full on class for people who could just read the manual.

Yeah, that's the only thing that is difficult for players to learn on their own, commanding is a big responsibility, and not something a n00b can learn in serious games and live to tell about it.

I can sorta see the idea of a "training" server, with cheats on so that both sides don't even have to have players, but I don't know if this server would even work, you'd have to work out the technical details. Also, you'd have to spend alot of your time on this to be of any use, or else it will just be one of those infamous "forum ideas" that never get off the ground.

I like it... it'd be better than going through the public server crap.

    And SDDM... wow... good work.
