Using A Joytick

<div class="IPBDescription">Freaky, I know....</div> Hey, does anyone here use a joystick for thier controls? I wanted to try it, since I have a nice POV for the view, and joystick axis for movement, or vice versa... I also think if I practiced, it would be a big advantage.... but, well, I can't seem to make joystick work the way I want it to.. I'd like to have me move the joystick, and it continues to move in the way I am pointing it... or atleast make it have more of a sesitivity.. or something like that..... Any suggestions?

    for increased sensitivity type -

    sensitivity in the console and it will return a number

    then decide how much more sensitive you want it and type

    sensitivity followed by a space and the new sensitivity

    try out different numbers till u find one best for you

    as a sidenote sensitivities above 5 will reduce your accuracy.

    Guh? Above 5 lowers accuracy? I think 12 is the bare minimum for tracking celerity skulks.

    Lol... sensitivity lower than 8 makes you have to slide your mouse across the room to track anything. My desk isn't that long.

    I keep my sensitivity between 14-20 i like to be able to turn 360 in a flick of my wrist

    The sensitivity values vary across each computer--you can't compare them accurately. A person with a sensitivity of 4 may equal a person with a sensitivity of 10.

    lol > 12 to track skulks my arse.

    Stating random numbers is worthless.

    What really matters is your window's sensitivity. 12 for you could be 5 for me.

    I've always wondered why people thought my sensitivty of 29 was high. But then again my window's sensitivity is all the way up too, are optical mice less sensitive than ball mice?

    Depends on the mouse. My old optical mouse was less sensitive than my old ball mouse, but my new optical is more sensitive than both. Personally I use a sens of 8, and it works fine. Like Forlorn said, mouse sensitivity is all relative. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I use a sens of 3.5 on my computer, and had a sens of 15 feel the same on a friend's computer.

    They really should set an industry standard, i don't want to waste time with trial and error. I want to set a number and be good to go.

    For my mouse (Microsoft Intellipoint Optical) I like a 8-14 sensitivity. Depending on my alertness, and whether or not my wrist is aching that day.

    Yeah, sensitivity is a highly subjective value. If you want to know what sensitivity someone uses, "How much you have to move your mouse to turn 180 degrees?" is a better question.

    To the original topic, I have been using joystick and mouse for FPS games ever since Dark Forces 2 in 97. That's joystick in left hand and mouse in right. Really good especially for those games like Half-Life that support proportional movement which means it moves slower/faster depending on how much you push the stick. Of course this is not for everyone, but I find it much more comfortable than using the keyboard to move.

    As for setting it up, all the info you need for that is in Half-Life's readme.txt. Here's the joystick.cfg I use for ns for example:
    <!--c1--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>CODE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='CODE'><!--ec1-->joyname "Logitech WingMan Extreme"
    joyadvanced 1
    joyadvaxisx 3
    joyadvaxisy 1
    joyadvaxisz 0
    joyadvaxisr 0
    joysidesensitivity 1.0
    joyforwardthreshold 0.25
    joysidethreshold 0.25
    joyadvancedupdate<!--c2--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--ec2-->

    Well, it's rather easy to tell other's your sensitivity:

    Just state either low, medium, or high.

    Easy, eh?

    I prefer mine medium towards the highesh end. I can turn my dude around by moving halfway around the mouse pad.

    I have to set mine low, because my mouse is freakishly sensitive as it is.
