I am pretty sure uplink is just to get the latest serverop icons. We have had to disable it because it was crashing our server but from recent tests this might be because the dns for our dedicated server is a bit flakey. Server op icons still do not work though <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
On the servers I admin it seems for us the admin icon will appear for the very first map when the server is started. After that it won't occur anymore until the server is reset and once again, onto the first map.
Linux server, running 3.1.1.1 HLDS (Unsure which variant), rh7.2.
Now I wonder if this is an Operating System related bug. We run Windows XP pro and everything is fine and dandy. How many of you guys having trouble are running Linux servers?
In 1.0x, connecting to a server and running the command <i>auth</i> (client side) told the server to check your wonid against <i>mp_serverops</i>. If it was listed, you got a green server admin icon. If not, you got nothing. The icon usually appeared when the score board changed in some way, like a player getting a kill or someone joining/leaving.
In 2.0x, auth is already enabled. Running it will turn off authentication for you, which disables all your special icons (no Veteran, PT, Const. or ServerOp icon will appear for you). You will only get the CD icon (if your running CD obviously).
From my observations I have come up with this order that the server uses to give you an icon:
1. Cheating Death check. If you have CD, you get the icon. If not, nothing happens. 2. ServerOp check. If your an admin, you get the icon. If not, you keep the cheating death icon (if you have CD). 3. NS.org list check. If the server gets the list successfully, special people get their icons, and everyone else (including serverops) get CD or nothing (depending on whether CD is running). If the server fails to retrieve the list, server ops are granted the serverop icon, and people with CD get that icon.
But I still dont get my icon, I set everything. Heres what it looks like
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->// List server op WON ids here, delimited by semi-colons (eg, "12345;23223;123123"). mp_uplink must be 1 for this to work. mp_serverops "******" mp_uplink 1<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
****** being my won id. What else could I be doing wrong? Is there something I missed?
I'm a constellation member and each time I join a CD monitored server I got the CD icon. I'm a server op either, and when I'm on my server, I get sometimes constellation and some other time Admin Icon. What's going on? I want my constellation icon to overwrite all the other icon.. Will it be adressed in 2.01x ?
It would be a goOd idea that ALL icons get a higher priority than the C-D icon... This would fix any problem of these icons <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I suggest you guys run a network sniffer and look at the traffic between your server and natural-selection.org on port 80 and make sure that the wonids are actually being downloaded.

it seems the lack of icons seems most persistant on linux servers, everyone i've talked to have said about 90% of the linux servers they play on don't show them, but windows servers do.
I think I know whats causing your probelm. I could be wrong here but here goes:
You have to have mp_uplink1 to get admin Icons I did a test with this and my admin icon will not show up with out mp_uplink set to 1.
If I am not mistaken your server is in the UK thus high latency to ns.org and crashing your server with mp_uplink set to 1.
I dont know what the default timeout for the server conntacting ns.org is but that perhaps is what is causing all the constellation woes. As for the Admin Icon those will show up without problem on a properly config'ed Windows server There are still Linux server issues with the icons.
Properly config'ed Server.cfg for windows as follows:
mp_serverops "wonid;wonid;wonid" <-- you must include the quotation marks.
mp_uplink 1
Thats it. Although one more thing to check (because Im not sure if the icon is actually supposed to come from the client or the server.) is both your client and server NS folder browse to ns\gfx\vgui and make sure you see these icons 640_scoreboardserverop.tga and 640_scoreboardguide.tga these are the actual Icons minus the color.
And on one final thought that I havent tested. Lower your screen resolution to at least 1024 x 768 perhaps the icons cannot show up on higher resolutions.
all valid points except that admin icons have never worked - even with mp_uplink set to 1 and constellation icons have always worked fine. thanks for your help - I'm trying a few other things too and I'll let you know if I figure it out.
MMZ runs a Linux server, constellation icons show fine as do CD icon (cd optional). Admin icons show intermittenly but always show after a server crash, but only for the first map it seems. I will pay closer attention to the circumstances during which the admin icons appear.
Last night I joined a game just as the map changed. When the new map loaded, I had my admin icon for the whole game. The map changed and I still had the icon (it was replacing the CD icon too). Later when I joined the server again, mid map, it did not display the icon. I did have the CD icon tho.
1: find out what the file is that NS is looking for on NS.org and then make a copy of it and stick it on a webserver you have somewhere.
2: edit your hosts file to make NS.org point to that website.
Now you've short circuited the whole NS.org lagging you out thing since you are in essence short circuiting the DNS for NS.org
Possible "Abuse": - Servers can all abuse the icons now by being able to enter in their own info in the file that contains constellation icons.
What it can help us do: - Quit lagging servers. - Allow "remote" (relative to ns.org) servers to have some form of admin icons.
My Theory about the icons: Icons have a predefined time that they are allowed to be assigned. If the icons are not assigned, then only the available icons are assigned. CD prolly gets assigned last, so if the server lags out on the other icons, the code skips those icons and then assigns the CD icon only.
Just a shot in the dark. Feel free to flame.

PS: I haven't had enough coffee lately... it may or may not work. All bets are off.
Im running on windows with latest hlds and ALL THE OPTIONS are set CORRECTLY
yet admin icons only work about 60% of the time. One map it will work then enxt it wont. It seems purely random and soemtiems they dissappear on a new round <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
It does seem more of a coding problem as otherwise they woudlnt work at all?
Interesting thoughts Pebb, how about the NS team arrange specific servers like ns.org that other users around the world can use, ns.org.uk ns.org.au etc - that way no-one can configure their server to say that they are the creator of the game <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
On my Win2k server with metamod and adminmod, everytime the map changes (I think it seems to happen after an actual game, not just the maps cycling without players on), the admin icons disappear, the console is giving messages about rejecting custom sprays, and all player sprays are changed to the default yellow HL logo spray (Most of us have one of the other HL sprays, such as the eightball, etc. So it seems that it's switching mp_uplink off every time.
I thought since it loads the adminmod.cfg every mapchange, I tried adding mp_uplink 1 to the adminmod.cfg, just to see if it would work, and it seemed to have no effect.

So mp_uplink is 0 and all we get is C-D icons :/ <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> My FreeBSD server has all icons working correctly. No problems. *shrug*
To fix your crashing problem, mount linprocfs as described in the stickied FreeBSD thread in the linux server forum. I just tested, and HLDS runs without linprocfs if mp_uplink is zero, but needs to be mounted if mp_uplink is 1. I'll update the other thread with this new info regarding mp_uplink, as it should help to narrow down the source of the problem.
I think I found a pattern to the admin icons working on my server. If I join while it's empty, it will show and stay even when people join until the map changes, then it doesn't work on the next map because other people joined before me.
i never see any icons except the CD one. no const, vet or admin ones - and i know there there are definatly players on *NTFM* who should have an icon. (we dont get may PT's or devs there though - but all are welcome)
