I have NEVER won a game as comm, yet I also have NEVER lost, its sad but it seems the old school way of commanding makes the entire alien team f4 thats not fun, there is no need for an f4 key, a simple console command called /retry sufices.
One of these time the aliens f4 was when I send one man into the hive, he fired ONE pistol shot at it, some guy said "Lame marines" on global, then it was over (i assume they thought I had sent a shotgun toting squad to the hive) - game time, about 2 minutes
Another time aliens were way on the way to victory, but by luck we took a hive, then another, JUST as we were getting to the last hive, they f4ed - game time, about 25 minutes
As marine you RARELY win the game, Marines either lose or make alien f4, removing the victory (people gonna argue f4 = win, but it doesnt have the same feel about it, its just plane lame) This is in my opinion what makes marine team not fun, and also when u have these idiot fools who f4 on alien it makes it not fun when they f4 and we were about to attempt to retake a hive.

IMHO, Marines are the most fun I've had playing NS in ages.
I could give a **** if I win or lose....sure, most people on my team don't feel the same way, but what do I care about the opinions of a bunch of sissies that didn't use teamwork in the first place?
The marines usually win against aliens if they have skilled players in it. Lets say 5 skilled players in marine team and a good commander can own an alien team. And the rush against marine base well if the guys is still building when they hear other marines shoot then they are just noobs. can pwn if he have the advantage (like in base rush)

Although the aliens do need some balancing, I still like to play marine. What can I say, I'm a gun nut - and while aliens are nice, I still love the tech stuff. Now what the marines need is new and more diverse hand weaponry. But then again those are just my 0.02 euros.
Oh, and... my first post on this forum
I think the marines are still pretty fun. I enjoy aliens more, but I think it's more of a play-style thing. As an alien, it's more personal skills as opposed to depending on others, especially the comm.
The thing I dislike about marines is comms who don't tell me what they're doing. I really dislike not knowing what's going on and what the plan is. If I know what the plan is, I'm going to be more beneficial to the team. Comms that don't tech, don't give out weapons when we have the res, and only use waypoints to dispatch me to build their turret farm annoy the hell out of me. 3 or 4 guys go rambo and do dumb things like knifing RTs, which give skulks plenty of time to get there. Then they don't tell the team where the alien RTs are. The number of times I've been the only one at the waypoint trying to build TF/turrets/phase/sieges/RTs is just plain stupid. Then a skulk comes along, jumps me, I die and everyone complains how "we lost processing".
Marines were never fun to me. I preferred the aliens in 1.x, I prefer the aliens now. I must admit that while the aliens themselves are incredibly fun to play, the lack of opposition is starting to get boring. I'm afraid I'd like to see a little balancing now. I've had my revenge for all the laughable victories the marines could pull off in 1.x.

QUOTE

The infamous full-team skulk rush at the very start of a level is undefendable, as far as I've seen, if you have a way to stop say... 7 skulks with (lets say... 9 marines max, minus 1 commander, minus 4 builders) 4 guards, would you please tell me? This is as frustrating as anything.

Well, lets say we're on ns_eclipse. Position two guys at the opposite side of the doorway against the wall. Those rushing skulks will be dead if that guy has anything of an aim. Two guys with good aim will stop that entire rush if they are placed well. And I seriously doubt that the four guys building would still be building when all the gun fire goes off and the skulks rush in. They arent that stupid, and if they are, thats not a good sign.
And jeez, where do you all guys play? I want to play marines all the time lol. What server? Seems like alien stacking goes on there, nothing I can complain against.
Yes, Marines - Teamwork is crucial. No teamwork, no win.
Aliens - Teamwork is optional. If employed, teh w1n is almost guaranteed.
I enjoy playing the marines more than the aliens, because I love space marines. Ever since the movie Aliens. If I ever play as the Kharaa, I'm usually in a support role like Gorge or Lerk, but that's rare.
I like to play marines. It's satisfying getting the harder kills; standing over the corpse of that onos and rescuing your teammate from being digested is rewarding. (:
Note that I only play 2.01b anymore - marines have a better chance in that, I find.
A great tactic for marines that seems to work alot for me is the counter rush. you just build armory and IP, have marine camp the doors and mow down the rush, then once the rush ends send the marines straight for the alein hive, if they all go and stick together it works VERY well, since about half the alein team has already ran to RTs and gone gorge, there is very little they can do, just have half your 'rines attack the hive and the other half kill the spawning skulks, it's cheap but it works if the aleins aren't expecting it.

It's true. I DO like to win. But over the past two days, I haven't had ONE good game. I think, in a good game, that some territory should change hands, see a little bit of strategy on both sides, but I've done little more than scramble to grab small areas, fight alongside a half-dozen teammates to hold that important area, and lose to stupid strats that are basically Onos + Lerk (lets see... run behind the turrets into the deadly gas... or run into the jaws of that onos... decisions, decisions...), Onos + Fade + Skulks, or some variation of that. The thing is, I can't even tell if I'm fighting n00bs or vets, I don't see anything particularly clever, sometimes we'll go up against one Godly Skulk or Fade that gets us all, and I chuckle a bit, but one good player decimating you (when you see teams of 5 get slaughtered twice in a row, does your team recover?), despite the supposed basing of this game in teamwork, it can get discouraging.

I find it interesting to note all these people saying that teamwork is optional for aliens. It isn't, unless the marines don't have a good commander. This is not 1.04. A single alien cannot take down a base any more given enough time. The only way to deal with turret farms is teamwork. The only way the aliens can win against a strong commander and a reasonable marine team is if they work together.
