Lets do a little scenario here, You are in a large fire fight with some aliens when suddenly your lmg runs empty you quickly switch to your pistol to kill the charging level 1(which happens to have carpace level3) you fire all your pistol rounds into it and it dosen't die would you rather: A)Pull out your knife and make a sad attempt at killing it. or B)Take your battle axe out of your pack and remove a few of his limbs.
Knife. By the time I swing my 'battle axe' around, he's already reached me and bitten off my various appendages. Kinves are so much more easily wielded in combat than an axe that it isn't even funny (not to mention that the knife model is done).

Back before they had guns they would have there cumbersome axe at ready when they went into a battle. While now that you have a gun and there is an alien charging in your direction your not going to have to much time to get your axe unhitched and readied before that alien gets to you.
and there is also the issue of armor. Those with metal armor had much more of a chance with it on before weapons advanced to easily be able to puncture it. Now, if you wished to have a chance at getting a hole through it, or just severely dent it, and arrows have only a small chance of doing so, depending on the bow, you will need a heavy weapon. A mace was a good choice as denting the armor and simply crushing the bone beneath it was far more effective. Such a heavy weapon enabled the person to get the momentum necessary to yield a force great enough to dent the armor, the reason a high to low swing worked so well.

Quote (Longtooth @ Aug. 04 2002,16:41)

If the knife is so much better than the axe explain to me why before the invention of the gun, the armies ran around with axes and not knifes.

Axes served double duty. Ok IF there was an option for an advanced melee weapon, I would say this...
Pike and slasher
The pike weighs 6lbs and the shaft is made of one of those snazzy, chitenous, ergonomic, synthetic materials. The pike is meant to not take up too much room because it is extendable. The shaft is 2' long and the blade is 8" long. The shaft can quickly be extended to 4', sorta like a switchblade.
The slasher is a 2lb machette-like blade. Both weapons are meant to be quickly readied and used in tandem. The pike is meant for impaling the alien, the "slasher" is meant to cut him when he's impaled, or defend yourself at close quarters if an alien gets way too close(past the pike head).
The key to this concept is standing a chance in close combat. I can just imagine you holding off a Bob with an axe, much less a knife. That knife is just there to help hurt Bob some before he kills you. Now mind you, you don't exactly have such great chances even with a pike and slasher, but it seems better then an axe.
i can see it know /me grabs his scientificy pike thingy pulls it back ready to kill a bob and smacks a teammate in the head rendering him un-chosis and then thrusting it forward waches as the bob moves to the side, then /me swings it the the side the bob whent to wacking it as it bites it in half through my chitenous ergonomic syntehtic material stick and i pull out a rocket louncher at blow it up point? lets have a rocket louncher intead of a knife. but really they didnt use axes they used swords and shields or broadsworads that are really big and heave and comon can u imagin crawling through thevent with a stick? lol but u could have a sword hilt then it grows into a sword so its compact, scientificity, and shinny
A knife is given to a soldier less so as a weapon and more so as a tool for whatever they may need it for (Picking their teeth, for example). It's only a weapon when you've run out of ammo and your commander is too damn lazy to drop off more.
Also, why would people of the future carry axes or swords or whatever when they possess the ability to rain ammunition from the sky?
If you think about it realistically (Yes, NS isn't about realism, but you still have to keep in mind that there are elements of reality in every game), packing a bigass battle axe, a pistol, a machine gun/shotty/grenade launcher/whathaveyou, some ammo, body armor, and whatever other equipment your standard Marine of the future is lugging around, likely adds up to a lot of weight. And by the time you get that axe out and swinging, you'll likely end up smashing it against the wall in some narrow corridor and cursing as a Level 1 tackles you and gnaws your head off. And all because you refused to use that utility knife while screaming at your Commander to drop some more ammo. I find cursing at the commander and blaming my death on him/her (Instead of admitting my own lack of skill) is much more effective than anything else. ~_^

I honestly wouldn't want to be going in to battle with a lvl.1 with a sword. Why? Too damn small. Attacking a creature roughly the size of a dog (?) will NOT Work too well when it can move quickly. Besides. I like my knife.
Your also forgetting that Bob is actually the size of a large dog(so somewhat larger then a medium sized wolf). Further worsening things is that Bob has massive claws and is an alien. This means he doesn't apply to the same principles as our earthly mammals. This could result in things like:
1)Carapace which has tremendous strength to weight ratio. 2)Agility and reflexes superior or at least equal to a cat- family animal. 3)Non-mammal wounding physics. This could result in little issues like a brain being able to be severely damaged, lack of a spinal system to paralyse, ability to handle vast amounts of pain and trauma, well conditioned to handle low blood levels etc.
All in all, a Bob could be considered a fair fight for an earth mammal several times his size.
Oh lay off me you damn realism trolls.

I think the dev team left out swords and axes for a reason. It would upset the balance, and make it easier for marines to DM. Any dev team members correct me if that's not the case...

Is there *any* point to that question? Sure. Knife him. Or use *one* bullet from your LMG. Or your pistol. Hell, at that point, he'd probably die if you made an ugly face at him. You want a super-amazing phase sword for the 1/10,000 chance that this situation will occur?
I know you were suggesting a possible scenario for knife use, but I said use the GL instead. Get the gibs going.
pull out your trusty light saber and cut off your arm that should be fun and if he has 3000 ping ull either go up to him and lag out or when u try to hit him he will lag move away. but really u heard the story (cant remember wich) where he knifed a lvl5 with a jetpack and although it was for fun i dont think a sword, axe, or suit of armor would help although a lightsaber would but then wed run around chopping of arms and jumping of ledges...wich i do for no apparent reaso on most mods

A)Pull out your knife and make a sad attempt at killing it.
or
B)Take your battle axe out of your pack and remove a few of his limbs.
I would pick C.

If you're meleeing with a level1, I don't care what weapon you're carrying... you're still lunchmeat.
In short, shaddap.
