Thanks for the tip off on IRC. Hehehe. I'm sure a lot of people can recommend some, here's my thoughts. First off, i really recommend you try and pick up some stuff with the original Japanese audio, the voice acting is usually far better.

I'll try and be pretty brief since i shouldn't be doing this. But it is National Slacker Day isn't it.

    Movies

Grave Of The Fireflies:
This is an incredibly moving film, fantastic animation and artwork and a story to die for. It follows two young siblings in Japan during the Second World War. Needless to say it's not a happy film but it is absolutely fantastic in every aspect.

My Neighbor Totoro:
Created by the same people as Grave Of The Fireflies this is the ultimate in kids films. Two children move to the country with their father (Their mother is ill in hospital.) and the kids have adventures and the like with "Totoro" (A troll.) in the forest. This is nothing but light-hearted fun and a great movie.

Ghost In The Shell:
One of Masamune Shirow's masterpieces. Set in the not-quite-so-distant future in Tokyo with high-tech weapons and mecha. This has achieved legendary status in anime much akin to how Akira has, it's a must-see for anyone who hasn't seen it and is interested in anime.

    Series

Chobits:
Well i could write pages on Chobits. Basically, it's fantastic, i love it. It's quite obviously aimed at teenage males but my g/f enjoyed it too.

In the really-not-very-distant-at-all-future computers now take the form of "Persocons" (Literally Computer in Japanese IIRC.) who are human in appearance (Usually cute and female.). Young ronin Hideki Motosuwa moves to Tokyo to cram for University and he finds a persocon lying in a pile of trash, he takes it home and, well, the story evolves from there. I would recommend you watching this as soon as you can, i love it entirely and it's a fantastic series. The plot is engrossing to say the least and i've watched the last episode several times and still it makes me cry.

Trigun:
This series follows the adventures and travels of legendary outlaw Vash The Stampede as he travels the world doing good. He's a bit of a one-man A Team to be honest. This series is compelling and funny but through the duration you start suspecting Vash to be rather sinister (Since his huge bounty was placed on his head for destroying and killing an entire city.), but as the story progresses you find this out. All in all this is a fantastic story with quality animation. I'd definately recommend it.

Great Teacher Onizuka:
Eikichi Onizuka is an ex-gang lord turned school teacher given the crappiest class who he has to turn good. He does this using his own brand of discipline which he learnt from his old gang days. This is a fantastic anime series which is both hillarious and sad at times. Onizuka is one of the greatest characters ever. The animation is fantastic (Although it took me a little while to get used to it.), the script is great too and the story is, well, addictive to say the least. Running at 43 episodes (Well, 42, episode 1 was more of a pilot, doesn't fit with the full story and runs about 15-20 minutes longer.) it's quite long but each episode leaves you wanting the next and you never want it to end. But it does.

Di Gi Charat / Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat:
A personal little love of mine. These two series's are completely surreal and ooze cuteness. Di Gi Charat follows Dejiko and her little sister (Puchiko.) and friends as they set out to be the biggest pop group ever, it's too cute. Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat however comes back with a more simplistic animation style but is equally as cute. Panyo Panyo... follows Dejiko and some new characters as she sets out on her mission to make the world happy. These are both generally pretty mindless, but fun.

Kodocha (Kodomo no Omocha):
I've still not watched this series entirely yet (Only about 32 episodes out of over 100.). It follows a young childrens tv star named Sana Kurata. This series does have a twist however, as the series progress the characters actually grow older, while they start off as kids they end up with kids and getting married and so on. This is a fantastic series with it's own unique elements, it's very light-hearted a good deal of the time, but when it gets serious it really makes you want to cry at times. It's an excellent series and you should watch it now.

Angelic Layer:
A bit of a Pokemon style series, this time from CLAMP (Same people as Chobits, Cardcaptor Sakura, etc.). This follows a young girl named Misaki as she moves to Tokyo to stay with her Aunt. She learns of a new game called Angelic Layer where small dolls (Angels.) fight each other and are controlled by the owner's mind. Basically it's all about her fighting her way up and going to win the championship whilst making new friends and enemies all the way. Dispite how Pokemon it sounds it is actually rather good and i loved the entire thing. And yeah, the ending did make me cry unfortunately. Notice a recurring theme?

Well there's a short little list, PM me on IRC if you want some more.

Yeah, and the original tanks were horrid devices that broke themselves almost, if not more than they broke the enemy, and look at the new ones.

anyway, this is bordering on High-jacking... so...

I'll recommend a couple. I'm not that good at describing stuff, so ya may want to run a search on these, for more info...

Excel Saga: Insanity is about the only way to describe it and be accurate. I'm unsure of how close it is to the manga, but each episode has a different "theme" style of either movies or anime. I've not seen the whole thing in its entirety, but the parts I have seen are quite good.

Blue Seed: Good, it's based on an old Japanese myth, and follows a girl named Momiji Fujimia. She innitially has, like its named for character and that guy off Blue Gender, Shinjii syndrome, but learns to cope with all the strangeness going on far better than Shinjii ever did. The remainder of the cast consists of the TAC, an official branch of the government assigned to minimize the public exposure to the Aragami. (they don't do any MIB style stuff though)

Dominion Tank Police: A Shirow creation, quite good.

Outlaw Star: still one of my top ten.

There's a series that is.. slightly more than PG-13 rated, but is pretty good, nonetheless. It's called Golden Boy. I saw it first on MTV in Germany, so I know it's available (dubbed) across the world. But yeah, not something to watch with your folks. Has some good lessons in life, though.

Personally, I'm allergic to all kinds of fanservice. Thus, I've developed a great disliking for anything Chobits / Love Hina / Oh My Goddess / Golden Boy.
My personal top three of anime would be Serial Experiments LAIN, Cowboy Bebop and its movie, 'Heavens Door', and the first Ruonin Kenshin OVAs, known in America as 'Samurai X'.
