get ready for mutliplayer mayhem.
Halo for the PC will be out soon and the xbox owners will be owning you on multiplayer as they've had a head start, so here is 343's guide to Halo.

Damn skippy. Having an advancing platoon of warthogs supported by a couple attack ships overhead, running up against the high-powered infantry weapons of Aliens in a cool defensive position, all with plenty of wide open spaces and actually cool undulating terrain? Sounds like dissimilar team-based 'high action, low strategy, nifty feature' NS-like fun to me.

If you think like that in multiplayer, then stay in single player to prevent embarrasing yourself. Plus only YOU can drive vechiles in single players, marines can't.
Let's kick start this guide with a guide on vehicles.
*Most off this is from me and the Xbox bible tips 2003*
Warthog
Strength
Superb for 2 players teams. Fast enough to mow down a unsuspecting opponent, and too heavy roll accidentally.*Unless your a total fool.*
Weakness
An easy target for Scropions and Rocket luanchers. A rear mounted gun turret means that it isn't for a lone player. Plus expert snipers can kill you and your buddy next to you with a single shot, believe i done it and have it happened to me.
Best Tips.
The Warthog can be a huge morale booster for your team. A succesful collaboration between driver and gunner can help you rack up kills quickly and achieve a deadly momentum
Warthog Tatics.
Hidden Turret, Crouching Trooper.
Hide behind a Warthog and remain motionless so you don't appear on the enemy motion tracker. Wait until a unsuspecting opponent is passing by, leap into the Turret then spray them
Ramp-age.
The Warthog makes a great portable ramp for a Ghost. Drive to the desired location, jump out find a Ghost, drive into the Warthog and sore through the air for abit.
Camp Warthog
What's worst than a spawn camper ? A spawn camper in a Warthog. Park in the vincity of any re-spawn points and use your gun Turret to wipe them out, accuracy is key here....Foot soldiers have grenades.
Turret sniping
Grab a Sniper Rifle and jump onto the Turret platform, DON'T ENTER IT THOUGH !!! Use the Turret shield for protection and happy sniping. If anyone gets to close, just get in the Turret and spray them.
Warthog countermoves
As a Soldier
Throw a Plasma grenade at it's rear-end and watch it do a massive flip . When attacking a Warthog with a pistol, try to stay as close as possible to the side of the vehicle or the rear. The Warthog isn't mobile enough to turn on the spot so you should be able to strafe around it without it hitting you. Take out the gunner first then finish the driver of with a few well place headshots.
In a Ghost.
Sneak up behind it and blast it with your plasma cannons. The plasma cannons will stun the gunner, prevent retaliation. Colliding with it though may leave you disoriented and defenceless, especially if your forced to bail out.
In a Scorpion.
A well placed shot will take the Warthog and it's occupants out. Finish them off with the machine gun if any survive, chances are they have no shields.
Moving onto the Scorpion now.
Scorpion Tank
Strengths
Immense firepower and an ability to strike at long range. Strong armour protects you from most bullets from the weapons.
Weakness
Slow and ponderous and an easy targets for snipers and grenade-slinging troopers. Likely to attract lots of attention. Score kills quickly before the entire opposing team comes after you.
Best Tip
Keep firing the Machine gun at all times * Cannon- Primary fire, Mahcine gun- Secondary fire.* the hail of constant fire will often have added effect of distracting the opposition. You'll also send out a important message, Don't mess with me up close.
Scorpion Tatics.
Turret spin
When attacking a enemy base, position the Scorpion so it faces away from the base, only the Turret should be facing it, that way, you'll be protected from sniper fire or other sort of projectile weaponary. Just watch out for enemys attacking from the front of you.
Fire in the hole!!!
Position the Scorpion on any hill or slope. The Scorpions long range means you can nearly hit anything on the map, use the machine gun to get the enemy up close. It's especially....dirty when your on a hill facing the enemy base, just fire into their base, usually you may not see them spawn but you can score lucky kills this way.
Think Tank
Camp at any repsawn point, the minute they spawn kill them, this will infurate the enemy, so expect some name calling.
Not so fast sonny
When having carrying troops on the side, make sure they have Plasma rifles, this weapon will slow down enemay vehicles, slowling them down for you to take down.
Shotgun shells and Sniper rounds
Have 2 men on the back have sniper rifles, the 2 on the front wield Shotguns, remeber it's not easy to fire accurately while someone is driving, so wait for one of your snipers to yell stop, stop and let the Sniper do his/her work. If anyone get's up close let the Shotgunners do their work.
Scorpion Countermoves.
As a Foot-Soldier.
Be strategic and get up close and personnal with the enemy driver. At close range it won't be able to hit you with it's Cannon, all you have to is avoid the Machine gun *It's very inaccurate anyway so it shouldn't cause a problem.* while firing at the driver, also throw some Grenades and runaway is another tatic. It your a skilled sniper then aim for the driver, a crack shot with the Sniper can dispatch him in one shot.
In a Ghost.
All of the Ghosts offensive abilitys seem to emphasise the Scorpions weaknesses. You should attempt to out-manoeurve the Scopion-which is easily done * and stun the driver with your Plasma cannons at close range. Or altenatively, sneak up behind the Scorpion, jump out and throw plasma grenade or 2 onto the back of the Scoprion, jump back into the Ghost and get out of there.
In a Warthog.
I can't stress this another, if your in a Warthog and you see a Scorpion either bail out or drive far away as you can.
In a Scopion.
It's fastest on the Cannon for this, make sure you hit the mark here. In BG * Short for Blood gulch.*stay on the low terrain so the hills obscure the opposing teams Scorpion.
The Ghost
Strength
Optimised for single players. Fast, responsive and a ideal device for mowing down Troops.
Weakness
Weak firepower, slow turning and easy to flip or roll causing you to bail out at inopportune moments.
Best Tip
PH33R this you foot soldiers, this snazzy purple vehicle is instant death if it touches you, try to get lone troops instead of groups of them. This hit and run tatic will infuriate the enemy, giving you a psychoclogical advantage.
Ghost Tatics
Parking Violation !
Park on top on teleporters to prevent people using them, or hang aroud none, when someone comes through, fire away.
Ghost World
Never stop moving with the Ghost, Grenades have less chance of hitting you and so do rockets, also learn to strafe in the Ghost - it'll help you to squash enemies shooting at you from the sides.
Rent-A-Ghost
Remember that the Ghosts gun temporarily freezes opponents while your firing on them, this short paralysis gives you time to take them out.
Tales of the unexpected
So what the enemies least, ride the Ghost straight into their base, many times have i seen my team mates start walking out of base, only to be crushed by a Ghost heading into the base.Plus it will also block of entrances and exits.
Ghost Countermoves
As a Foot-Soldier
Plasma grenades are a Ghosts nightmare, once it's on a Ghost you surely can expect a kill.
As a Ghost
Ghost duels often require more patience than skill. Keep the enemy Ghost busy while your team-mates plan a counterattack and rush to your aid. A very risky technique is to smash into the enemy Ghost. You can often make the enemy pilot bail out, but if it goes wrong and YOU bail out, kiss your sweet Ghost **** goodbye.
As a Warthog
Acoid beign stunned by the Ghosts weaponary, as it will paralyse you and hurt you making also preventing you from making counterattacks. If you can, ram into the Ghost and make the driver bail out, the nrun him down before he get's back in.
As a Scoprion.
Make sure you have a clear shot before firing the cannon. Fortunately the Ghost is a fairly large target and stands out in BG and Sidewinder, due to it's colour.
Enjoy the guide, i'll post some more later, now read it and make me proud when Halo comes out, no excuse to be owned now, except by my Sniping skills.

Comments
grenades are potentially the best weapon in the game. both kinds. learn to throw, and do that quickly. you can deal with any vehicle that way, and any situation besides dealing with snipers at long range.
sometimes you might worry that lobbing a grenade at a speeding vehicle is just a waste..... it's not. learn to track the momentum and steering capabilities of each respective vehicle, and it becomes almost like planting frag grenades like landmines. just watch, think, aim, and throw, and *tick*, *tick*, boom. hopefully you timed it right.
in indoor maps and close quarters, don't wait until you can see your enemy to use your grenades. if he's around the corner, throw your frag grenade hard at the floor, at the base of the corner. most likely he's a little ways away or directly behind it, hugging the wall. following the explosion, take action. don't let the thought of being assaulted get into the enemy's head before you actually assault the enemy.
tanks are horribly easy to take out. just make sure you're not in plain sight, and shoot them with whatever weapon you've got, at whatever range. aim for the cockpit and fire away. grenades are also particularly effective: it's very easy to plant a plasma grenade on the cockpit of a stationary or moving tank, and not very hard to get a frag grenade timed directly beneath the cockpit.
sometimes you might seek cover from explosive weapons behind rocks and thin walls. never do so, unless the thickness of the cover object is considerable. you still catch the blast, through the object, sometimes.
ghosts are annoying. learn how to strafe them, when it's safe to just crouch beneath them (to avoid getting run over), and from what angles you have the best chance of shooting them. basically from the side or back is most effective: the pistol will typically get to be your favorite multiplayer weapon.
the plasma pistol is your new lover. charge it up, point in the general direction (your crosshairs should turn red when you're targeting [at least they do on xbox]), and let her go. the shot costs a good amount of plasma cell ammunition, but it's worth it: the blast will travel at a good clip towards your target, making subtle adjustments in direction to home in. upon impact, the shields of the target are completely drained, leaving him vulnerable to physical attacks and conventional weapons. club him with your rocket launcher.
damage zones with melee attacks can be crucial. always aim high, at a range of about two feet. if you're too close, you'll have a guarantee to hit him.. if you're aiming at him. you're both moving around a lot, typically, and it's easy to lose your tracking if you get too close. attack behind, if you can: being stricken from behind does the most damage. so does being shot in the back of the head, in the black, lightly-padded area at the base of the skull.
i hope these help. if i think of more, they're yours.
edit: banshee combat don't let up for a minute, or you're f*cking screwed. the banshee has plasma cannons like the ghost, but also has a fuel-rod cannon (basically physics like a 40mm grenade). i expect that you're gonna get a fuel rod straight up your poop chute if you don't take this flyer out fast. the good thing is, its armor (again, i only know this from xbox, they might change things) *SUCKS*. it could only take about 2 magazines worth of 12.7mm pistol rounds, as far as i can remember, and if it gets too close, do *not* hesistate to use your shotgun or assault rifle. the shotgun should only take about half a tube to bring the banshee to the ground, and the assault rifle shoud be between .5 and 2 magazines, depending on range.
edit2: banshees are not very fast at all. pelt it with plasma grenades. it only takes one. when you've got a plasma grenade on your banshee, you're boned.
o yeah. i loved jumping up with the rocket launcher and using it like a huge club.
Yeah, to bad they've mostly been using Controllers, and we have Keyboards and Mice. K+M > Controllers.

he means they have *experience* liks.
Reason: Fastest. They all do same damage, but pistol is the fastest.
1. When in vehicles, ALWAYS have the max number of people the vehicle can carry, and configure accordingly. Example: in a warthog, have the driver and machinegunner as normal, but have a guy in the passenger seat with a sniper rifle or rocket launcher. Either will let you counter enemies the machinegun alone can't (enemy vehicles or snipers out of accurate MG distance)
2. The human pistol is singularly the best multiplayer weapon on foot, period. You spawn with it, it has a 2X scope, it's ridiculously accurate and powerful, and less than half a clip of headshots will drop anyone without an overshield. Think of it as the pistol from NS. If the enemy loves sniping, you can get a sniper rifle yourself, and excessive use of the pistol has already trained you for accuracy at long range. If the enemy loves vehicles, grenades work just as well (if not better) than the rocket launcher, are easier to find, and are more versatile (you don't have to get out of cover). If the enemy is stupid enough to attack you from close to medium-range, you will kill him. Period. Unless he fires a shotgun literally into your face, in which case you could've already beaten him upside the head with your pistol anyway.
[edit]Note Quaunaut's above post as well: the pistol is the fastest for clubbing people with, despite how all melee attacks with any weapon do equal damage (typically 2-hit kill on a newly-spawned enemy, if I remember correctly.)

I had a great time this summer, there was a tournament in my town for Halo, absolutely crushed the competion my team and myself in four man ctf. Even came out with 200 bucks, not too shabby eh?
Sorry, Halo is one thing I CAN brag about being good in.
You do realize that if you're that good, we'll want to hear some of your secrets to success, right? Edit this post and fill it chock-full of tips for us! Og og og!

Halo for the PC will be out soon and the xbox owners will be owning you on multiplayer as they've had a head start...

Um, you seem to be not realizing that PC Halo player will play only other PC Halo players. There is no cross-platforming here for two major reasons: 1) There would need to be a major update for all Xbox owners to get the new maps, weapon, and multiplayer vehicles, and 2)Halo for Xbox is only playable online if you get the Tunnel program, Halo was never meant to be an actual online title for the XBox.
Yes thank you for stating the ovious, i was refferring to xbox owners who buy it for their PCm please think abit it first.
I'll come up with a banshee guide soon.
Banshee
Strength
The only flyable vehicle. The fuel rod cannon *Secondary fire* is devastating agasint vehicles such as the Warthog and Ghost.
Weakness
Sluggish and difficult to control at times and a all to easy target for artillery, weak armour means you could take quite alot of damage in heavy fights.
Banshee
Death from above
Initiate each attack run with a shot from the fuel rod gun and follow up with a constant stream of plasma fire *Primary fire*. Show no restraint in your attack and try to decimate the enemy in one sweep. Retreating from a heavy firefight will result in you taking heavy damage.
P.P.B * Purple plumenting Banshee.*
Sometimes when you see a lone troop, just plument down and launch the fuel rod cannon.
Banshee Countermoves
As a foot soldier
Fighting a Banshee is traumatic experience. The 1st step to killing it is being able to spot it from a distance. Listen for it's very distinct sound and keep an eye out for the trail of smoke it leaves behind. Take cover when it makes it's attacking swoop, as it passes over or turns round , start firing at it. Small arms are generally ineffective agasint a Banshee, but if your're lucky , or an extermely good shot, you should be able to kill the pilot * I recommend using the Human pistol, or a Sniper if your a good shot.*
As a Warthog
A the driver should try his best to get behind the Banshee. The fuel rod cannon could flip the Warthog, leaving you defenceless.
As a Ghost
Drive away and hope you don't flip.
As a Scoprion
Make sure you've lined up the sights correctly before firing. A missed shot could cost you precious time, energy and your life. If you miss a shot bail out and use the Scoprion for cover, when it passes over, jump back in and don't miss, alternatively you could use the Scorpions Machine gun and hope it's powerful enough to stop the Banshee.
I'll do the foot soldier later, if any onecould find bird eye views of the map could they post them please or PM the site.
all the following stuff is for NON-MOUNTED combat.
here are my infantry tactics (most likely applicable to PC too, though i haven't played it) for legendary mode (where you gotta think more),
but with a twist: i'm an assault rifle and plasma pistol pro
many people hate these guns, so i'll give you some tips (these tactics work for me anyway)
grunts: simple. eventually you'll develop a very deft trigger finger when you brush your crosshair across their faces with the human pistol. AR: usually grunts are in groups. when they are, you can avoid getting hit by putting a single bullet in the head of each grunt, all in a row, and then doing it again. with a pistol you'll usually take a hit or two, but with the AR's rate of fire, single shots are tasty v. grunt groups. PP: i would call using the plasma pistol against these guys a waste of ammo, but... they carry replacements. so... suit yourself.
jackals: legendary makes them complicated. in legendary they typically develop full-auto tendencies, so you won't stay in the open as long, covering the distance to melee them. PP: carry a plasma pistol, all the time, so you can deliver single charge-up shots to the jackals from long range. they typically don't dodge. fire once or twice at the shield using regular shots to distract (making sure the targets don't roll to the side), and then deliver the full blast, thus disrupting the shield. you can follow with melee, or.. AR: it's very hard to put a bullet through the jackal shield's "pocket" or "slot" using the AR, so use it as a followup to the plasma pistol blast. again, bursting is often seen as pointless, but it's tremendously effective.
elites: simple, even in legendary. you can use whatever you want, these enemies have the most balanced defense vs. different weaponry (as opposed to the grunts' resilience vs. plasma). BUT... PP: the plasma pistol performs BEAUTIFULLY, using either function, vs these enemies. from afar, you can try for a charge up shot, and then follow with your alternate weapon, or you can simply rapid fire. it's easy to keep the pressure on without overheating, and these suckers go down QUICK. AR: if you have skill at tracing (elites tend to dodge more in legendary), you can take out most elites with under 1 clip, a full clip, or a full clip and a smack. it's also a brilliant followup to a PP blast.
hunters: ouchey if you screw up. mistakes cost a lot of life. just dodge (i prefer dodging left), and put a single pistol round in his back. PP: useless. AR: doesn't affect hunters as well (lookin at SEVERAL shots with the AR, to ONE shot ...) as the human pistol. if you're a crazy ****, like me, just do a merry-go-round thing with him, smackin him in the @$$ until he faints.
flood little sh*ts: a single AR round costs NOTHING in your ammo pool, and usually kills half the group or the whole group of 'em. just a tip from a pretty compulsive strategy gamer. i save every EVERY round.. 0_0;
flood warriors: they're almost equally resilient, so i won't split this category. run and gun with a shotty or an AR. AR lays em down okay. plasma rifle does a good job, too. the trouble with these guys is, they tend to get up a LOT of the time in legendary. so as soon as they go down, if you've got the time, take their heads off. if you don't have the time, just ditch em. note: if they're MOBBING you, grenade (frag for its quick fuse) and retreat. when the corpses fly, run through to your exit. you don't have to kill them, you have to complete your mission. PP: suxor. AR: already stated.
flood big things: shoot em with whatever you've got on hand, from AFAR. ouch if they explode on you.
robot sentry things: shotty at close range is deadly, with less cooldown time than a rocket or a plasma blast.
now, anti-vehicle and anti-armor tactics.
ghost: if you've got good timing (legendary ghosts dodge like b*tches), just plant a plasma on them. rockets require slightly less timing. with a mouse, you should also be able to pick the elite's head with your sniper rifle, even from in front. from the side is easy.
banshee: pistols work wonders. 1.8 clips, about? i don't remember how many it takes, but it's really really easy. sniper rifle is a waste of ammo. if it's swooping on your ****, and you're close enough to put your whole cone on it, then spray the sh*t with your assault rifle. it's like banshee poison, and it's more fun than planting a plasma nade, which is also easy.
wraith tank: obviously rocket launcher is choice, but don't carry around a rocket launcher thinkin you NEED it that badly, just for wraith tanks. if you're good at dodging the plasma mortars, then i think the formula is 4 plasma nade impacts (easy to plant) and 2(?) frag nade impacts (best under body of tank). if it's hurting, you can always plasma it or something.. but plasma nades are so easy to find around wraith tanks.
now for nade tactics!!
everyone knows how to use plasma grenades. chain reactions are fun.
but... frag grenades are the unsung heroes of the halo campaign.
the primary advantage of the frag grenade is the short fuse. here are the benefits that come to mind, for me:
-at corners, throw it at where the floor meets the corner to hit anything immediately behind the wall. the short fuse reduces the possibility of enemies surviving by fleeing.
-vs groups, the fuse is shorter.
-in groups THAT ARE INTACT (no dead bodies and litterings of plasma grenades), there are no possibilities for a chain reaction. the frag grenade it has a shorter fuse and thus a higher lethality rate vs. fresh groups of covenant.
-vs flood, any grenade is good to get them the hell out of your way while you run through. frag grenades just blow faster.
-vs elites, who like to run run run away from plasma grenades, the short fuse helps again.
yeah it was long, but i worked hard on it (years of halo).
i know everyone's got their own style... but please try some of this, and tell me how it works for you?
But I run out of them so quickly.

the one drawback >_<
This is very much true for Halo, so learn to take them out while they are in the air (its a bit easier because there is more airtime/float more/slower in Halo at normal gravity than any other game I've played).
Although its still annoying as hell.

Odd that I didn't see that reply made back when it was...
Anyway, XBox Halo owners don't really have much of an advantage over new PC Halo-ers. They do know more about the weapons and some tricks, but those are all easily 'learned'/mimicked over a short period of gametime. (Like the afformentioned jumping annoyance).
i have to disagree. i don't think anyone who just bought the game will become as good as i am (or as good as any of the true veterans are) in as little as a few weeks or something (vs. 1+ year)
As soon as Halo 2 comes out, I'll write a single/multiplayer guide for those who need it (though from what I've seen in this forum, I doubt few will)

If anything dedicated PC FPS players have the skill advantage. Trying to get pinpoint accuracy on an XBOX controller is really difficult. My mouse and keyboard are just SO much more accurate...
Sure, I'll probably go down in CQB. But the whole point of being a sniper is making sure they never get there.

it also feels good to let people hear your strategies and stuff.. because when you put 'em into words, you're also organizing them for yourself, further solidifying your mastery of the game.
bam.
zig's blog: feeling masterful.
No... most of the people I know with Halo don't even play on PC with K+M, and that is 100% better than Controllers, for FPS at least. I just got Halo 3 days ago, and I get some of the top scores in Multi-Player.
