I was too young for Transformers, but I LIVE Ghostbusters and TMNT. Ghostbusters always had great shows, and TMNT was just awesome. XGB was ok, but it didn't really capture the essence of the original, which is what killed it. Also, demographic shifts changed a lot too. Internet and Playstation have stolen Saturday Morning.
I couldn't think of anything until Samwise mentioned Darkwing Duck. That pwned
Well, i'm with everyone else that was born at the start of the 80's.
I grew up with cartoons like Thundercats, He-Man, Transformers, Count Duckula, Danger Mouse, Pole Position, Batfink, Dogtanian And The Three Muskehounds, MASK and Ulysses 31. These all played a massive part in my childhood and i love them all still today as i did when i was a kid.
EDIT: Whoops, and the Turtles and Ghostbusters.
EDIT: UlyssEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEs noone else can do the things you do!
It may have gotten a little crappy near the end, but by god you grew up on it.
I think the going age for a TransFan is like 18 an up.... Anybody younger need not apply, you missed out on the cool toys and I don't mean the crappy Beast Wars crap that don't even look like a damn animal. I mean the kick-arse die-cast toys that were blocky as hell, and if you didn't own one you weren't considered cool.
Mortals!! You defy the gods? I sentence you to travel amongst unknown stars, until you find the Kingdom of Hades, your bodies will remain lifeless as stone!
Man, Ulysses 31 would scar you for life. Specially the ep with the giant computer flashing up the Trident and you realised it was evil..... or the one with the big tapeworms that turned people silvery...... great stuff for children!
Captain N, the gaaaaammmmmmmme master, yes, good show. Much better than the Super Mario Bros one... *shudder*.
Okay, not saying this is the best cartoon, (in fact, it isn't even a cartoon, and I barely watched any of the episodes), but there was this puppet show from a long time ago, (from like the 50s or 60s - either that, or it purposely gave used that sort of style). The show involved aerial vehicles (most which were rocket propelled, I think) which I could of sworn were called "ThunderBolts, hence the name of the show. But I can't seem to successfully google this series.
Anyone know what the deuce I'm talking about?
Back to the classics:
Total Wackiness Bests: Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry Coolness Factor Bests: Transformers, GI Joe
For more of the modern stuff (exclusive 90s era), I'd say the best wacky cartoons would have to be "Eek! The Cat", and maybe "The Tick". I also enjoyed "Freakazoid" as well. I am SOOOO ticked at myself for not watching the Sam & Max series when it was still on... *sobs*
For the coolness factor, the best one has to be "Batman". X-Men was pretty decent as well...

I also liked watching the computer generated show Reboot. I even bought a few of their action figures. Unfortunately, it was cancelled and moved to Canada. It had a rather deep ongoing story for a cartoon: then again, that might be why it was cancelled. It was too deep for little kids, but too lighthearted for adults.
Reading back through this topic brings back a lot of memories
I remember Transformers as the best, but there were also Garfield Cartoons, Felix The Cat...
The only problem I have with remembering the classics is that I remember them upon seeing their name or the cartoon itself. Hard Recall is difficult as it is...
I remember captain planet, but mainly because it was cheesy, The Trapdoor was an excellent series, even if only for the intro ().
I remember voltron because I own a few of their comics, TMNT was great (My favorites were leonardo and michalangelo)...
But for hardcore slapstick style, nothing beats the Three Stooges (I know I know, not a cartoon, but funny in any case)...
Does anyone remember the cartoon called(I think) "bots master" the main charecters name was zid zoolander ZZ for short and he had a bunch of thinking AI robots that kickass and one of them had rollerblades, but this evil corporation only had dumb robots so they would try and steal ZZ's AI robot tech. I think one of the evil peoples names was lady franzy or something. It was on Fox at like 1 o'clock in the early 90's. The only time i could watch it was when i missed school. Anyway I remember loving it and thinking it kicked ****, I tried to miss school every other day so i could see it.
Anyone else ever seen it??? Non of my friends in "real life" have ever seen it.
REBOOT! I remember that! I used to love that!
Actually, I saw a few episodes of it a few weeks ago for the first time in years. It's even more hillarious now, because I understand all the computer terminology and how terribly it's being mangled
If you want long lasting cultural and soceital impact it has to be the simpsons. Absolute satire of life. Its funny, its relevant and its long lasting.
If you want the biggest impact in animation, well probably Steam Boat Willy, the old Mickey Mouse cartoon that brought animation to the masses and used circles and bubbles to make drawing quick and effiecent.
And to say tranformers is just so Be nice.
....
off topic in Japan Spirited Away made $480 million. (might be a aus figure). I think that might have an impact to bringing Anime mainstream.
Reboot kicked so much, I loved that show. They used to still show it like a year ago. Also Starship Troopers had a very sweet looking CG series going on for awhile, I used to get up at 7am during SUMMER just to watch it. I suppose those are 'cartoons' but they are kinda the same thing with different methods.
Anyone remember Pinky and the Brain? I memorized the theme song from that show. For awhile I was also really into The Mighty Ducks cartoon, let us never speak of that again...
reboot was the best show i use to watch....they made new episiods and stuff but they took it off the air cause they decided that we had to much fun watching it...

I didn't get into Transformers because of being cool, or 80's culture. I got into Transformers because I was brought up on it, and even if it wasn't done to promote toy sales, it was an excellent cartoon that actually changed something. Do you think the current acceptance of Anime would have occured without such inroads being made?
