<div class="IPBDescription">Sort of...</div> Introducing the Cel-Shaded Pack v.1. This pack includes new model skins for every alien, alien building, marine, and marine building.
The skins here are not *really* cel-shaded, just that they look like they are. They are as close to it as the HL engine can get. I havn't re-done the gun models yet but I will in a future release.
Enjoy, and feedback is welcome.

<a href='http://www.geocities.com/kevms2709/CShadePack.zip' target='_blank'>Hold left click and drag to address box</a>

*edit* the marine buildings look like crap, but the alien models look good. Could someone help me on how to make them look better?

    I did some basic cel-shading on them and they turned out really ugly in game, but really good in photoshop. In game, these look really well. I will work on them more and update it.

    in hlmv, i cant see the thick outline (the slightly bigger reversed black polygons) i was expecting from a 'cel-shaded' model <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->

    cel-shaded? I was hoping for something like the shading in the mod BuzzyBots, but this is just like if you've applied 8-color skins on the models...

    That's definately NOT cell shading, it looks like all of the texture bits have been blurred :/
    Sorry to dissapoint the author but definately not worth the download.....

    Oh yeah to add an example of real cell shading:
    This TFC dispenser is a good example of:

    <img src='http://www.shark5060.net/forum/fricken/dispenser.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
    Onos from this pack looks like that:
    <img src='http://www.shark5060.net/forum/fricken/onoz.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>
    No black outlines :/

    Dont wanna trash your work, just wanna show that its no cell shading at all :/

    Is there any models that looks like the picture above the onos?
    <img src='http://www.shark5060.net/forum/fricken/dispenser.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    it would be kinda cool =)

    Not for NS I don't think.

    But there is an old HL mod that was dedicated to Cell Shaded models called Buzzy Bots. Was mad fun too.
  • kms2709kms2709 Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10784Members
    you *cannot* make actual cel shaded models in NS without a whole 'nother mod. My mission was to make the models look as close to the real thing as possible. The alien models look respectable, but my marine skins suck thats why im goin to keep working on them.

    No, some other guy did it, and showed us some examples in this forum....but I have no idea what happened to him or the models-that-took-less-than-5-mins-to-convert-to-cel-shade. The way I understood his explaination is, you gotta make a copy of the model, make it slightly bigger, color it black and make it inside out so that you can only see the black on the inside, giving the black line effect.

    If you had THAT added to what youve done already, that would be quite awesome <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    edit: it doubles your poly count, btw, as the inside out model is put around the original model

    Do you just not know how to cell shade models?

    It has nothing to do with code.

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->gotta make a copy of the model, make it slightly bigger, color it black and make it inside out so that you can only see the black on the inside, giving the black line effect.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    there ya go.

    Take the whole model, duplecate it, englarge it a tiny bit, reverse all the polygons and give it a black skin.

    Only problem is it doubles the polycount.

    how do you "reverse the polygons" in milkshape?
  • MartMart Origin of SUYF Join Date: 2002-02-26 Member: 248Members
    Use the magical 'Flip Faces' button.
  • kms2709kms2709 Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10784Members
    Where is the flip faces button? Im using 1.6.6a. Is it on that version?

    oh god...

    you probly should even be doing this in the first place...

    Face: reverse vertex order.

    I'm guessing youve never made a model from scratch because you would haved used that option all the time when making indeviduas polies.
  • kms2709kms2709 Join Date: 2002-12-14 Member: 10784Members
    Ok no wonder it didnt look right, it doesnt giv eit the black outline thing in milkshape 3d view, but it does in HLMV.

    REAL cellshading isnt a reversed model. you code that. But as far as I know theres no mod for hl that allows REAL cellshading therefor you must use the mentioned method.

    So could anyone make a high poly 'cel-shaded' pack? It would be awesome! (or maybe I've just been playing that XIII demo too much...)
  • DubbilexDubbilex Chump Join Date: 2002-11-24 Member: 9799Members
    Now that I recall, there were some cel-shaded lookalike models in a <i>Sven Co-Op</i> map. Lookeh.

    Exhibit A:

    <img src='http://www.dodstudios.net/uploads/uploads/ToonExample1.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    Exhibit B:

    <img src='http://www.dodstudios.net/uploads/uploads/Toonexample2.gif' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    Therefore, it CAN be done, to varying degrees of effectiveness. or those of you who are no familiar with Sven Co-Op, the cel-shading effect on these models works quite well indeed.
