In the 1940's to the 1980's the US and Russia (This isn't counting France, UK, etc.) conducted over 538 nuclear tests! Let's pretend that only 50% of these were large-scale (Greater then 100kt) nuclear weapons. Now let's say that only 60% of THAT were above-ground test. That's 161 ABOVE GROUND WEAPONS GRADE NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS.
The earth wouldn't be covered in a blanket of ash.
I picture a Vietnam-esque situation. Ambushes everywhere, no real front to fight on. Americans don't do guerilla warfare, but the Vietnamese do! So Americans, British, and Germans fortify bases and key cities. Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese hide and do guerilla warfare on the Kharaa. The Russians start making assloads of guns for everyone and send human waves after human waves into known infected areas.
